Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you mean a digital file you can play on a 3D-capable device, HandBrake is a free option for converting an accessible DVD. If you mean a stereoscopic file—such as a side-by-side image that carries separate views for each eye—a DVD ripper alone will not create it. Ripping and encoding a disc is different from making stereoscopic 3D.
First, decide what you mean by “3D video file”
A regular DVD-to-video conversion changes how the video is stored or encoded; it does not add depth or turn a flat image into stereoscopic video. A file that happens to play on a 3D-capable screen is not necessarily a stereoscopic 3D file.

For ordinary conversion, HandBrake is the clearest free choice supported here. For actual stereoscopic output, the available evidence does not establish a current free, end-to-end DVD workflow or justify naming a DVD ripper that performs the whole job.
Best free option for converting an accessible DVD
HandBrake: best for a standard digital copy
HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoder. It can read DVD sources and create MP4, MKV, or WebM files. It converts video rather than passing it through unchanged, so the result is an encoded video file rather than a simple container change. HandBrake’s official documentation states: “HandBrake does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” See the HandBrake Project’s About HandBrake documentation and its source-format guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- A teenage Peter Parker grapples with both high school and amazing super-human crises as his alter-ego Spider-Man.
This makes HandBrake a practical pick when the disc is accessible to the software and your goal is a conventional digital video file. It is not a 3D-conversion tool, and standard HandBrake presets should not be described as stereoscopic presets.
Why MakeMKV is not a 3D-conversion answer
A MakeMKV forum response describes MakeMKV as a remuxer, not an encoder that converts a 3D Blu-ray rip into side-by-side video. That is forum guidance, not formal product documentation, and it concerns 3D Blu-ray rather than establishing a DVD conversion workflow. It nevertheless illustrates an important distinction: remuxing streams into a container is not the same operation as encoding video into a stereoscopic layout. See the MakeMKV forum discussion.

- Spider-Man [Tom Holland] begins to navigate his new identity as the web-slinging super hero under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark.
Convert a DVD to an ordinary video file with HandBrake
- Open the DVD source: In HandBrake, open the disc or its accessible source. If your computer has no optical drive, you will need a compatible external DVD drive; HandBrake’s documentation supports DVD input but does not endorse a particular drive.
- Choose the correct title: A disc can contain several titles, such as the feature, episodes, or extras. Select the one you actually want to convert rather than assuming the longest or first-listed title is the right one. HandBrake’s Quick Start guide explains the basic source-selection workflow.
- Choose a preset and output format: Select a preset suited to your playback needs, then choose MP4, MKV, or WebM as the output container. HandBrake describes Fast 1080p30 as a broadly compatible default, but that is ordinary compatibility guidance—not a 3D preset or a guarantee for every device. Review the official preset documentation.
- Check tracks and destination: Confirm the audio and subtitle tracks you want, set the output filename and save location, then start the encode. DVD subtitle inputs include VOBSUB and closed captions, but subtitle output depends on subtitle type and settings; do not assume every track will carry over. See HandBrake’s subtitle documentation.
- Test the finished file on the intended device: Confirm that the picture, sound, selected subtitle track, and playback behavior meet your needs. A successful encode does not establish that the file is stereoscopic.
What to do if you need actual stereoscopic 3D
Treat stereoscopic creation as a separate conversion problem. Before choosing software, verify that it accepts your particular source, creates the required layout or format (for example, side-by-side), and produces a file supported by your playback device. The evidence available here does not verify a current free tool that takes an ordinary DVD through to stereoscopic output, so there is no reliable end-to-end recommendation or set of steps to give.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your source is already stereoscopic, avoid assuming a ripper or remuxer will change its layout. A tool that copies or repackages streams may preserve what is there without encoding it into the format you need.

Copy protection and permission are separate questions
HandBrake’s inability to defeat or circumvent copy protection means a protected disc may not work with it. Software capability also does not determine whether copying a particular disc is permitted: the answer depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances. Consult authoritative guidance for your location if you need legal advice; this article does not settle local copyright or anti-circumvention rules.
