Manage a Microsoft-billed Xbox Game Pass subscription at account.microsoft.com/services. Sign in with the Microsoft account that bought it, select Manage beside the subscription, and use the controls and dates shown there. Turning recurring billing off prevents future automatic charges, but access continues until the displayed expiry date.
Check whether recurring billing is on or off
On the subscription’s details page, use the status and date to understand what will happen next. Microsoft’s guidance says a renewal date or upcoming-charge notice means recurring billing is on. An expiry date or a Turn on recurring billing control means it is already off and the subscription is set to expire.

Check the status on your own account page: available controls and account states can differ. If the subscription is missing, make sure you are signed in with the Microsoft account associated with the purchase; another account may not show the subscription or its controls.
Turn off automatic renewal
- Go to Microsoft Services & subscriptions and sign in with the account used to purchase Game Pass.
- Find the Game Pass subscription and select Manage.
- Review the subscription details, then select the recurring-billing or cancellation control offered for that account and follow the confirmation steps.
- Check the displayed expiry date and status to confirm the result. Access continues until that expiry date; turning recurring billing off does not end it immediately.
Microsoft’s general subscription-cancellation guidance also directs customers to sign in with the purchasing account, locate the subscription, and follow the displayed steps. It links to separate Xbox-specific cancellation information, so the precise Xbox screens may differ from the general guidance.

Turn recurring billing back on
If the subscription is set to expire and you want future automatic renewal, open it under Services & subscriptions, select Manage, and choose Turn on recurring billing when available. Depending on the account state, Microsoft may instead show Renew or Resubscribe; those options can renew the subscription and enable recurring billing. Prepaid, expired, or unavailable subscriptions may show different choices.
Change the payment method
For a subscription with recurring billing, go to Services & subscriptions > Manage > Change how you pay. Choose an available payment method, or add one if needed. If Change how you pay is missing, Microsoft says recurring billing may be off and the subscription may already be paid through its expiry date. Prepaid subscriptions do not support changing the payment method.

Change the plan or billing recurrence

If the account offers the option, use Services & subscriptions > Manage > Change > Switch, then select an available recurrence. Microsoft advises checking that recurring billing is on if the switching option does not appear.

Understand recurring and prepaid subscriptions
| Subscription state | What to expect | Relevant controls |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring billing on | A renewal date or upcoming-charge notice indicates the subscription is set to renew automatically. | Payment-method and recurrence controls may be available. |
| Recurring billing off | The subscription is set to expire on the date shown and will not automatically charge after that date. | Turn on recurring billing, Renew, or Resubscribe may be offered, depending on the account state. |
| Prepaid subscription | The subscription is paid through its expiry rather than managed as a recurring payment. | You cannot change its payment method. Microsoft advises turning off recurring billing on the old subscription before using a prepaid subscription code when it expires. |
A prepaid code is an optional way to add subscription time, not a requirement for turning off recurring billing or changing a payment method. Before buying one, check the exact plan, region, duration, current listing, and redemption terms.
