Plan for peak installation space, not just the final file sizes. List every game, check its publisher and platform requirement, and add room for unpacking, patches, and preloads. Then reclaim space in a low-risk order, move libraries using the launcher’s supported controls, and expand storage with hardware that your PC or console can actually run games from. Deletion, selective content packs, and cloud streaming can postpone a purchase, but they each have limits.
Why several installations need more space than the store sizes suggest
A store page usually shows an approximate installed footprint. During installation, the platform may also keep a compressed download, unpack files into a temporary directory, verify data, and stage an update. A preload can require additional free space before the game becomes playable. The peak can therefore be higher than the number you see after installation finishes.

There is no official universal “keep 20 percent free” rule that works for every platform. Instead, use the largest documented requirement for each title and preserve additional working room for the platform’s normal update process. Record whether each number describes a download, an installation, a preload, or ongoing free-space requirement.
Documented examples of peak requirements
| Game or component | Platform and figure | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War | 95 GB free on PlayStation 4 | Activision’s launch support documentation; this was a free-space requirement, not merely the final installed size. |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War | 93 GB free on Xbox One | Activision’s launch support documentation; selective mode packs could reduce the overall footprint. |
| Destiny 2 | About 353.00 GB on Steam | Bungie’s current platform table lists the Steam install plus preload example and warns that some platforms need extra room during download and installation. |
| Xbox PC app | 150 MB for the app itself | Microsoft’s current Xbox PC requirements page; games require additional space beyond the app. |
These figures are tied to their stated platform and documentation date. Do not transfer a PlayStation number to Xbox, or an old launch requirement to a current edition, without checking the current publisher table.

Step 1: Calculate the real requirement for your game list
- Write down every planned title and edition. Deluxe editions, high-resolution texture packs, test builds, and separate multiplayer clients can occupy different amounts of space.
- Check the publisher’s support page and your platform listing. Prefer a stated free-space or preload requirement over a rounded store-page size.
- Label each figure. Mark it as download, installation, preload, or ongoing update space. A download-only figure may not cover unpacking.
- Add the figures using the highest applicable requirement. Do not count an optional language, campaign, multiplayer, or texture pack unless you intend to install it.
- Compare the total with the drive’s usable free space. Capacity printed on a drive is not the same as free space after the operating system, filesystem overhead, applications, and existing games.
- Leave working room for updates. Keep enough unused space for the largest title likely to patch next, rather than filling the drive to its final byte.
For a practical worksheet, use columns for title, platform, edition, documented requirement, optional packs, preload warning, and destination drive. This makes it obvious which single game is preventing the batch install.
Step 2: Free space without losing data
Clean in an order that makes recovery easy. Start with operating-system tools and files you can redownload; only then remove games or personal files.
Windows cleanup sequence
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review the category breakdown.
- Open Cleanup recommendations. Review temporary files, large or unused files, and files synchronized elsewhere before selecting anything.
- Delete temporary files and installers you no longer need, then empty the Recycle Bin. Keep installers for software you cannot easily obtain again.
- Move videos, photos, project archives, and other personal media to another internal drive or an external drive. Verify that the copy opens before deleting the original.
- Use Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved to select a less crowded drive for future apps, documents, music, pictures, and videos.
Microsoft describes freeing space as a way to help a device run better and stay secure. Built-in cleanup is preferable to deleting unknown folders inside a game library, Windows directory, or launcher cache.
Console cleanup
- Uninstall games you no longer play from the console’s storage-management screen.
- Before removing a game, confirm that its saves are synchronized through the platform account or cloud-save feature. A game’s installation and its save data are separate.
- Remove optional texture, language, campaign, or multiplayer packs when the game’s manage-content screen allows it.
- Keep a note of titles that can be redownloaded from your library. Treat deletion as reversible only when the license and save synchronization are confirmed.
What not to delete
- Do not remove a save folder simply because it is small; it may be the only local copy.
- Do not erase a launcher’s manifest, license, or metadata files to reclaim a few megabytes.
- Do not interrupt an update while the platform is applying files. A failed update can require a repair or complete redownload.
Step 3: Move existing games before buying storage
Moving a game changes its location without downloading the entire title again, provided the launcher supports the operation. Close the game first and let the launcher finish any pending update.
Steam on Windows
- Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Use the drive selector to choose Add Drive, then create or select a Steam Library folder on the destination drive.
- Select the installed game, choose Move, and select the new library.
- Wait for the transfer to finish. Start the game and allow Steam to verify files if prompted.
Steam supports multiple libraries and moving installed games through this screen. Steam also warns that installing Steam itself to an external hard drive is not recommended because of potential performance issues. A disconnected or slow external drive can make a library appear missing and can interrupt updates, so an internal SSD is the safer home for games you play regularly.

Other PC launchers
Use the launcher’s own move, locate, or change-install-folder command. If it has no supported relocation function, do not improvise by renaming folders and deleting manifests. Back up saves, record the installation path, and follow that launcher’s recovery procedure; support differs between launchers and games.
Changing the default destination
Relocation solves the immediate shortage, but new installs can refill the system volume. Set the default drive in the launcher, Windows’ Where new content is saved control, or the console’s storage settings. Keep the operating-system drive from becoming the only destination for large updates.

Capacity alone is not enough. Compare whether games can run directly from the device, the interface and performance class, platform compatibility, update behavior, portability, and how easily you can reverse the change.
| Option | Best use | Can current games run directly? | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal PC SSD | Active PC library and fast updates | Usually, when the launcher and operating system support the drive | Requires an open compatible slot, installation, and sometimes cloning or a new volume. |
| External USB SSD | Overflow, transport, and launchers that support external libraries | Depends on the launcher, filesystem, connection, and game | Disconnects and slower links can interrupt play or updates; verify support first. |
| PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | More internal space for compatible PS5 and PS4 content | Yes, after meeting Sony’s current requirements | Check minimum capacity, interface, sequential-read performance, physical dimensions, and heatsink requirements before purchase. |
| Xbox Series X|S expansion card | Running current-generation titles that require the console’s high-speed storage class | Yes, for supported titles | Use the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card for titles that require that class. |
| USB drive on Xbox Series X|S | Storing or moving games that do not require the high-speed class | Not for every current-generation title | The console may require you to move a title back to internal storage or an expansion card before playing it. |
PC: internal versus external
An internal SSD is the broadly compatible choice for an active PC game library. An external USB SSD can be useful for overflow or for a launcher that explicitly supports external libraries, but check the launcher’s rules, filesystem, cable, and power behavior. Mechanical external hard drives provide capacity and portability but are less suitable for frequent loading and patching.
PS5: verify the M.2 specification
Sony supports adding a compatible M.2 SSD after you check the console’s current minimum size, interface, read-performance, physical-clearance, and heatsink requirements. Once installed and formatted, the drive can store, download, manage, and play compatible PS5 and PS4 content. A drive that fits physically but misses the required performance or heat-management specification is not an adequate upgrade.

Xbox Series X|S: distinguish storage from playable storage
Current-generation titles that require the high-speed storage class should remain on the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card. A USB drive is still valuable for archiving, moving games between consoles, and running titles that do not have that requirement. Follow the console’s prompt for each title instead of assuming every game can launch from USB.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStep 5: Reduce each game’s footprint
Install only the content you use
Some games expose separate campaign, multiplayer, language, or texture packages. Select only the modes and languages you need, and remove a pack later through the game’s manage-content screen if your platform permits it. Activision documented this approach for Black Ops Cold War, where selective mode packs could reduce the overall footprint. Optional packs can return during a reinstall or major update, so record your choices.
Use streaming when it genuinely fits
Xbox says users can “Skip the install and stream most games with cloud gaming.” This applies only where the title is cloud-playable and the account has the required subscription or access. Streaming avoids local installation space, but it depends on service availability, a supported region and device, and a stable internet connection. It is not a substitute for a local copy when offline play, mods, or a title’s licensing rules require installation.
Step 6: Protect saves and recoverability
- Let the launcher or console close normally before moving or uninstalling anything.
- Confirm the last cloud-save synchronization time, then launch the game once to verify that the expected progress appears.
- Keep an independent copy of important saves when a game does not synchronize them. Save locations vary by game and operating system.
- After a move, use the launcher’s file verification command and start the game before deleting the old folder.
- Remember that Steam’s backup feature covers games that fully download, install, and patch through Steam. Saves, mods, screenshots, and custom content may require separate backups.
If a drive disconnects during a move, reconnect it to the same port, restart the launcher, and use its locate or verify function. Do not begin a second download until you have checked whether the existing files can be recognized.
A decision guide for a crowded drive
| Your situation | First action | Next step if space is still short |
|---|---|---|
| You need room for one upcoming install | Run built-in cleanup and remove temporary installers. | Move personal media or one rarely played game. |
| You have several PC games on one full system drive | Add a second Steam library or the launcher’s supported library path. | Install an internal SSD and make it the default destination for new games. |
| You play a few PS5 titles that no longer fit | Uninstall finished games after confirming saves. | Install an M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s current specification. |
| You own many Xbox Series X|S titles | Archive or move games that are not in regular rotation. | Use the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card for titles requiring high-speed storage; use USB for suitable storage and transfers. |
| Your connection is fast and the title supports cloud play | Stream instead of installing. | Keep a local install for offline access or unsupported titles. |
Troubleshooting common installation failures
“Not enough space” even though the final size appears to fit
Check for a preload or temporary-unpacking requirement. Pause other downloads, free space equal to the publisher’s stated peak requirement, and retry. A game may need room for both the compressed package and the files being created.

Confirm that the destination drive is mounted and has the same library path. In Steam, open Settings > Storage, add the library if necessary, and use the library’s locate or verification controls. Other launchers may require their own locate command.
An external drive works for storage but not for launching
Check the game’s storage-class requirement, the launcher’s external-drive policy, the USB connection, and the drive’s filesystem. On Xbox Series X|S, current-generation titles that require high-speed storage must be moved to the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card.
An update repeatedly fails
Leave more free space than the displayed patch size, because the platform may stage and replace large files. Verify the game, restart the launcher, and ensure the destination drive is connected and writable. If the failure follows a move, restore the original library path or use the launcher’s repair process before redownloading.
