Open the Download Manager before starting a batch of demos
Steam’s Download Manager shows active transfers, queued installs, paused items and completed work in one place. Valve’s Steam Support describes it as the place where “Downloads and updates can all be managed via the Download Manager in the Steam client.” Open it using any of these routes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Select Downloads at the bottom of the Steam client window.
- Choose View > Downloads from the top menu.
- Open Library, then select Downloads.
Keep this page open while adding demos. It lets you see which item is transferring, which items are waiting, how much disk space an installation needs, and whether Steam has paused a transfer because a game is running.

Start the installations
- Open the store or your Library and select Install for each demo you want to try.
- When Steam asks where to install an item, select an existing Steam Library folder with enough free space. If you plan to use another drive, create or select that Library folder before committing the batch.
- Return to Downloads after each installation is added. New entries may appear behind an update or another download that was already waiting.
Starting an installation does not mean every demo must consume bandwidth immediately. The Download Manager is designed for manual control, so you can arrange the list before allowing the transfers to proceed.

Pause entries that should wait
In the Download Manager, use the pause control on every demo that is not the current priority. Pausing removes that entry from active bandwidth use while preserving it in the queue. This is useful when you are adding a large number of demos and want to prevent the latest click from competing with the demo you already chose.
Leave the preferred demo resumed. If another update starts unexpectedly, pause that update as well, unless it is required for a game you intend to play immediately. The list should show one active demo and the rest paused or waiting.
Reorder the queue
Steam allows queued entries to be reordered in the Download Manager. Drag the demo you want next toward the top of the queue, or use the available queue-order control in the row. A practical order is:
- The demo you want to test first.
- Demos with a deadline, event or limited-time access window.
- Smaller demos that can be installed quickly while you are deciding what to play.
- Large demos that can run overnight or during another off-peak period.
After reordering, resume the selected item and verify that its progress begins. You can repeat the pause, reorder and resume cycle whenever priorities change. Steam will not infer your preferred order from the order in which you clicked Install; check the Download Manager instead.
Sequential queue versus allowing several transfers to share bandwidth
There are two useful ways to handle a demo backlog. A sequential queue gives one demo the connection until it finishes, while a bandwidth-limited concurrent plan lets several downloads run under a shared cap. Neither is universally faster: the right choice depends on whether you need one demo ready quickly, must protect other network users, or can leave Steam running unattended.

| Decision factor | Sequential queue | Bandwidth-limited concurrent use |
|---|---|---|
| Time to finish the highest-priority demo | Usually clearest and most predictable because the chosen demo receives the available transfer capacity. | Longer or less predictable for the first demo because capacity is shared. |
| Impact on household traffic | Can be high while the active demo uses the connection without a cap. | More controlled when a download-speed limit is configured. |
| Gameplay latency while transfers run | Potentially noticeable unless downloads are paused or limited. | Potentially lower than an uncapped transfer, but still depends on the connection and the cap. |
| Disk capacity and library location | Space is consumed one installation at a time, but the full backlog still needs room eventually. | Several installers can reserve space at once, so free capacity can disappear faster. |
| Overnight scheduling | Works well when you want a known order and can leave Steam to process it. | Useful when finishing the entire backlog matters more than any single demo. |
Choose sequential downloading when one demo must be playable soon, when your connection is shared, or when you want a simple way to diagnose a slow transfer. Choose concurrent use only when you can tolerate each item taking longer and have enough free space for multiple installations.
Keep Steam downloading while you play
Enable downloads during gameplay
Steam normally pauses downloads when a game launches. To allow transfers to continue, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. Return to the Download Manager and resume the demo if it remained paused when the game started.
Recommended Free Tools
This setting applies to the client’s general behavior, so it can affect every game session. If you are playing a latency-sensitive multiplayer title, continuing a large download may cause lag even when the game itself is otherwise running correctly.
Limit speed when gameplay becomes sluggish
In Steam > Settings > Downloads, configure Limit Download Speed when downloads interfere with play, video calls or other household use. The limit is also visible in the Download Manager, allowing you to confirm that Steam is respecting the cap.
Steam expresses this setting in bytes or megabytes per second, while many Internet plans advertise bits or megabits per second. A byte contains eight bits. For example, a plan described as 100 megabits per second is theoretically equivalent to 12.5 megabytes per second before protocol overhead and other network limits. Compare like units before choosing a cap; otherwise a value that looks small or large may be misleading.

Start with a conservative limit, test the game, and increase it gradually if latency remains acceptable. If the game still stutters, pause the demo from the Download Manager instead of raising the cap.
Schedule demos for overnight or off-peak downloading
Steam provides an automatic-update window under Steam > Settings > Downloads. Use a period when the connection is not needed for work, streaming or multiplayer play. A scheduled window is useful for a backlog because the queue can progress without requiring you to remember to resume every item.
Scheduling does not remove manual control. When an update or installation must start immediately, use the Download Manager to override the schedule and begin it. When a transfer should not run outside the window, pause it manually. Review the queue before leaving the computer unattended, especially if several demos were added to different Library folders.
Valve’s December 11, 2024 Steam Client Beta note describes update-timing defaults, per-game overrides, Manage Exceptions, speed limits and pausing downloads while playing or streaming. The exact options you see can vary with the Steam client build, so read the labels shown in your installed client rather than assuming every game follows the same exception.
Fix a slow or stalled demo download
Confirm that another queue item is not consuming the connection
Open the Download Manager and look for an update or installation above the demo you intended to prioritize. Pause competing entries, move the desired demo to the top and resume it. A queue that appears slow may simply be serving a different item first.

Try another Download Region
Open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region. Start with the region closest to your physical location. If content-server performance is poor, try another nearby region and then restart the transfer. A different region can help when a particular server cluster is congested, but it cannot fix a saturated home connection or a problem on the route between your provider and Steam.
Check software and network interference
Security software, filtering systems and local network conditions can affect access to content servers. Temporarily review firewall or security-suite logs for blocked Steam traffic, and check whether another device is uploading or downloading heavily. Do not disable protection permanently; the goal is to identify whether filtering is responsible and then add an appropriate Steam exception according to the security product’s documentation.
Separate a real stall from a disk-writing pause
Steam may alternate between network activity and disk activity while it allocates, verifies or writes files. If the network rate drops while disk usage remains active, wait for the current write operation to finish before changing regions or cancelling the install. If both network and disk activity remain at zero for an extended period, pause and resume the item, then recheck the queue order and available storage.

Check capacity before starting the backlog
Multiple demo installers can require more space than their download sizes suggest because Steam may need room for temporary files, unpacked data and the final installation. Review the space indication shown when selecting a Library folder, and leave additional headroom for updates and normal system use. If the Download Manager reports insufficient space, pause lower-priority entries before beginning another installation.
Use another Steam Library folder
Steam supports creating or selecting a Library folder on an alternate internal drive or an external SSD. During a new installation, assign the demo to any existing Library folder with enough capacity. Valve also documents moving existing games to another Library folder without downloading them again. That means you can relocate a completed demo or a larger game to free the original drive for the rest of the queue.

An external SSD is a practical optional storage accessory for a large demo backlog. Its documented benefit here is additional library capacity and the ability to move installations without a new download; do not assume that changing drives automatically improves Steam’s network speed.
Move completed installations strategically
- Finish or pause the current download so Steam is not modifying the files you plan to move.
- Open Steam’s storage or Library-folder management controls and add the alternate drive as a Steam Library folder if it is not already listed.
- Use Steam’s move option for an installed game, select the destination Library folder and let Steam complete the transfer.
- Return to the Download Manager and confirm that the original entry is still installed before deleting anything from the old drive.
Moving is preferable to uninstalling and reinstalling when the goal is simply to rebalance space. Keep the external drive connected whenever you want to launch a demo stored there.
A reliable workflow for a large demo backlog
Prepare the queue
- Check free space on every intended Library folder.
- Open the Download Manager using the Downloads link, View > Downloads, or Library > Downloads.
- Start each demo installation and confirm its destination Library folder.
- Pause every entry except the demo you want first.
- Drag the preferred demo to the top of the queue and resume it.
Choose network behavior
- If no one needs the connection, leave the priority demo uncapped and let it finish.
- If others are online, set Limit Download Speed under Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- If you plan to play, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay only when the connection can handle both activities.
- If you are leaving the computer overnight, set an automatic-update window and verify that the queue contains only the items you intend to run.
Review after each completion
When a demo finishes, check that Steam marks it complete and that the next item is actually active. If it is paused, resume it manually; if an unrelated update moved ahead, pause that update and restore your preferred order. Check the remaining disk space before starting another large item, and move completed installations to an alternate Library folder when the original drive approaches capacity.

Common problems and the quickest correction
| What you see | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The newest demo starts instead of the one you wanted. | Steam added the new installation to the queue without matching your priority. | Pause the new entry, move the preferred demo to the top in the Download Manager, then resume it. |
| Every download stops when you launch a game. | Steam’s default behavior pauses downloads during gameplay. | Enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Steam > Settings > Downloads, then resume the demo. |
| The game becomes laggy while a demo downloads. | The transfer is consuming too much available bandwidth or queueing capacity. | Set Limit Download Speed; if that is insufficient, pause the transfer while playing. |
| Steam reports a slow content-server connection. | The selected Download Region may be congested, or security software or network conditions may interfere. | Try the closest region or another nearby region and review filtering or household traffic. |
| A demo will not install because the drive is full. | The chosen Library folder lacks enough capacity for the installation and its temporary files. | Select another Library folder, add an alternate drive or move an existing game without redownloading it. |
| The transfer rate falls to zero briefly while disk activity continues. | Steam is writing, allocating or verifying files. | Wait for the disk operation; intervene only if both disk and network activity remain idle for an extended period. |
Settings checklist before you leave Steam running
- The intended demo is at the top of the Download Manager queue.
- Unwanted demos and unrelated updates are paused.
- The selected Library folder has enough free capacity.
- Allow Downloads During Gameplay is enabled only if you accept the possible latency impact.
- Limit Download Speed is set when other household traffic needs protection.
- The Download Region is suitable for your location and current performance.
- An automatic-update window is configured if transfers should run overnight or off-peak.
- An alternate Library folder is available if the primary drive may fill.
What Steam can and cannot automate
Steam can remember queue entries, process them in an order you set, apply a download-speed limit, use an automatic-update window and continue downloads during gameplay when you enable that setting. It does not know which demo matters most to you, whether a household member is about to start a video call, or whether an external drive is physically connected. Those decisions remain manual: set the order, choose the cap, select the Library folder and review the queue before leaving it unattended.
For most people, the dependable pattern is simple: prioritize one demo in the Download Manager, pause the rest, cap speed when the connection is shared, schedule large transfers for off-peak hours, and move completed installations to another Library folder when storage—not bandwidth—is the limiting factor.
