To control what an AI feature can access on your device, check the feature’s permissions and trace what happens to its inputs and outputs—not just where its model runs. On-device inference can keep a request’s computation local, but it does not by itself prevent an app from collecting context, keeping logs, using third-party SDKs, or sending data to a cloud service. Manage access feature by feature, and verify the app’s own disclosures alongside the operating system’s controls.
What “on-device AI” does—and does not—tell you
“On-device” describes a processing location, not a complete privacy guarantee for an app. Google documents Gemini Nano as running on-device through Android AICore, which provides isolated local processing for the model. Apple says Apple Intelligence assesses whether a request can run on-device and uses Private Cloud Compute (PCC) when a request needs greater computational capacity. Those are platform providers’ descriptions of their own systems; availability and routing may vary by feature, device, language, and software version.

Even when inference is local, the app still determines what context it selects, how it assembles prompts, whether it stores responses or logs, what its analytics and other SDKs receive, and whether it makes later network requests. Google’s Android Enterprise guidance cautions that app data handling remains under the developer’s control and may include cloud transfers or unintended collection. A local model therefore narrows one part of the data path; it does not settle who else can access the data.

For each AI feature, identify what starts it, what information it can read, where processing occurs, who receives data, and what is retained. Keep optional context—such as a selected photo—separate from information essential to the app’s core operation. Include the app, operating-system services, incorporated libraries and SDKs, and any remote AI or cloud provider in the map.

- Trigger: What action starts the feature, and does it run only when you ask?
- Inputs and context: Does it use selected files, photos, messages, contacts, microphone input, or other information? Can you choose what it sees?
- Prompt and output: What context is sent into the model, and where does the response go or get stored?
- Processing and recipients: Which steps run locally, and which operating-system service, developer, provider, or SDK can receive data?
- Retention and controls: Are prompts, context, outputs, or logs retained? Is there a clear deletion or consent-withdrawal route?
- Fallback: What remains usable if you deny or revoke access, or if local processing is unavailable?
When comparing features, apply the same questions to each. Check whether access is narrow and user-selected or broad; whether permission denial disables unrelated functions; whether processing routes vary by device, region, language, or feature; and whether privacy claims have technical controls or independent review avenues. Attribute provider claims to that provider rather than treating a policy description as independent verification.
Limit access to what the task needs
Grant the least access that lets the requested task work. If an app can use a narrow picker or content you select, prefer that over blanket access where the option is available. A feature that summarizes one chosen document ordinarily needs access to that document, not unrestricted access to every file. Reassess permissions when the product changes; access that once served a feature may no longer be needed.

Ask for access when a person invokes the feature that needs it, explain the purpose in plain language, and provide a useful alternative when permission is denied. Android developer guidance recommends just-in-time explanations and graceful degradation; Apple’s App Review Guidelines call for data minimization and alternatives where possible. Review permissions requested by libraries and SDKs as well as those requested directly by the app.

Exact labels and paths differ by operating-system version and device, so use the device’s settings search if needed. Revoke access you no longer want, then check which features stop working and whether unrelated functions remain available. Permission controls limit particular kinds of access; they do not necessarily control information you already supplied, data already sent, or every form of app telemetry.

Check local processing and cloud routes separately
Look for feature-specific documentation that explains whether processing is local for your device, model, software version, language, and request type. Also check what happens to inputs and outputs outside the model: an app may transmit data before or after inference, and diagnostic or analytics SDKs may have their own data flows. Google’s AICore documentation describes isolated local processing for Gemini Nano, while Google’s enterprise guidance emphasizes that app-level handling can still affect privacy.
If a request can leave the device, the explanation should identify what is sent, to which service, for what purpose, and how it is handled after processing. Apple describes PCC as a route for requests too complex for local models. Apple says requests are encrypted to nodes the device has validated, used for the requested inference, and deleted after a response; it also describes restrictions on runtime access and making production software images available for research. These are Apple’s stated design commitments, not a general guarantee about AI cloud services.

In June 2026, Apple announced that new Apple Intelligence workloads would use Google Cloud infrastructure through PCC. That is a hybrid service arrangement, not strictly local inference: distinguish where the model runs, who operates infrastructure, and what safeguards and retention commitments the provider describes. Check current documentation for the particular feature, since supported capabilities and routing can change.

Read disclosures and consent as part of the control
Check the app’s privacy notice for the data it collects, where it comes from, why it is used, who receives it, how long it is kept, and how to withdraw consent or request deletion. The notice should match actual behavior, including changes to AI providers, model routing, context sources, or diagnostic SDKs.

Apple’s App Review Guidelines apply to apps submitted to Apple’s ecosystem. Under 5.1.2, Apple states: “You must clearly disclose where personal data will be shared with third parties, including with third-party AI, and obtain explicit permission before doing so.” The guidelines also call for minimization, accessible consent withdrawal, and privacy-policy detail about collection, use, sharing, retention, and deletion. This is Apple’s platform requirement, not a statement of law that applies everywhere.
Reassess when the feature or its providers change
Permissions and privacy disclosures can become outdated when an app adds a capability, changes its model or processing route, adopts a new provider, or updates an SDK. Recheck what the feature can access and where its data goes after material changes. On Android, developers can consult permission usage and denial patterns where applicable, remove permissions no longer used, and inspect library requirements. Keep feature-specific records so it remains clear what access is needed and what happens when a person declines it.
