There is no single, documented switch to turn off every AI feature in audiobook apps. The available controls depend on what you mean: Google Play Books lets Android users change its ebook Read Aloud voice, while Spotify’s published Recaps opt-out is for publishers. The official Audible pages reviewed describe AI-assisted discovery but do not give listeners an opt-out path.
First identify which feature you want to turn off
“AI features” can refer to different things, and their controls are not interchangeable:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- AI-narrated audiobook: Google describes this as audio generated from an ebook with text-to-speech. A Read Aloud voice setting is not a documented filter for these catalog titles.
- Ebook Read Aloud voice: A text-to-speech voice reads ebook text aloud. Google Play Books provides a setting for its more natural reading voice on Android.
- Recap or summary: Spotify Recaps help listeners revisit material they have heard. The documented way to disable them applies to publishers, not listeners.
- AI-assisted discovery: Audible describes features that help people search for and discover audiobooks. Its cited announcements do not specify a listener-facing off switch.
Google Play Books on Android: change the Read Aloud voice
To stop using Play Books’ “More natural reading voice” for ebook Read Aloud, open the Google Play Books settings and turn off that option. Google says Read Aloud then works offline. This changes the voice used to read ebook text; it does not remove AI-narrated audiobooks from the catalog.
To select a different text-to-speech engine or voice on Android, go to Android Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output. Google notes that voice availability varies by location.

If the issue is an AI-narrated catalog audiobook
Google defines an AI-narrated audiobook as audio created from an ebook using text-to-speech. It cautions that listeners may encounter mispronunciations, unnatural pauses, or a voice whose tone does not fit the content. Its audiobook help page invites feedback about problems, but does not document a global listener setting to hide or disable all AI-narrated titles.
Audible: no listener off path in the cited announcements
Audible has described Maven, an AI-powered search tool, as well as review-derived tags and recommendations informed by recent Prime Video watches. The official December 1, 2025 announcement and April 9, 2025 announcement explain features but do not provide a listener-facing setting path to switch them off. Check the current app version or contact Audible Support for an account-specific answer rather than relying on an unverified menu route.

These are company-reported usage observations, not independent estimates of audiobook listeners generally.

Spotify says audiobook Recaps are available for select English-language titles and help listeners revisit material they have already heard. Its Recaps instructions describe how publishers, including users of Spotify for Authors, can turn the feature off for a catalog or individual titles. Spotify says a change can take up to 72 hours to appear. For titles published elsewhere, it directs publishers to provide more information. The page does not document a listener-side switch, so listeners should not look for a Recaps off setting in the app based on this guidance.

Kobo’s iOS guidance describes Text-to-Speech for ebooks, with voice and speed controls. Kobo says the feature is available for all ebooks in the EU and select titles outside the EU. That is an ebook reading aid, not evidence of an AI-audiobook setting. See Kobo’s iOS Text-to-Speech instructions.
