Choose a Copilot+ PC if its on-device AI features will help with tasks you actually do and the specific laptop fits your software, peripherals, budget, and portability needs. If you will not use those features, compare traditional Windows laptops on their own merits rather than paying extra for the Copilot+ label. The label describes a hardware-and-feature category; it does not guarantee that every model is faster or lasts longer for every task.
What makes a laptop a Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs around a high-performance neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). The NPU is a specialized processor for AI workloads. Microsoft’s category examples include Cocreator in Paint, Image Creator in Photos, and real-time caption translation. The precise experiences and their availability can change as Windows is updated. Microsoft Support’s computer chooser describes the category; Microsoft Learn’s developer guide explains the NPU requirement and examples.

Copilot+ is not a separate replacement for the ordinary Windows laptop checklist. A traditional Windows 11 laptop can still run productivity, communication, security, and accessibility features; Microsoft’s chooser, for example, lists Phone Link and Windows Hello among Windows PC features. The distinction is the high-performance NPU and support for designated Copilot+ experiences—not a promise that every app will run better.
Will the Copilot+ features matter to you?
Consider Copilot+ if you have recurring AI-enabled tasks
If creating or editing images with the listed Windows experiences, or translating speech in captions, would solve a recurring need, include eligible Copilot+ models in your shortlist. The value depends on whether the feature is available for your device, region, language, and Windows version, and whether it works for your task.

Consider traditional laptops if the category features are not useful
If those experiences would not change how you work, compare the actual processor, memory, storage, display, battery evidence, and price of available laptops. There is no reason to choose by category name alone.
An NPU only helps where Windows or an application is designed to use it. It does not automatically speed up conventional apps, and the NPU’s TOPS figure is not a general CPU or graphics-performance ranking. Microsoft Learn lists Copilot+ examples using Snapdragon X, AMD Ryzen AI 300, and Intel Core Ultra 200V device families; check the precise model rather than assuming every laptop with a related processor has the designation.

Compare the exact laptop configurations
Once you know which category is worth considering, compare complete model configurations. Microsoft’s catalog shows Copilot+ examples with different processor families, memory and SSD options, and manufacturer battery claims, so the category alone cannot settle a purchase decision. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC catalog changes over time and can reflect regional or discontinued configurations.

| Apps and peripherals | Confirm the exact processor architecture, app support, drivers, and accessory compatibility with the relevant software or device maker. | Copilot+ status does not establish universal compatibility. |
| Processor and workload | Compare the named processor and independent tests for the applications you use. | NPU TOPS describes AI throughput, not general-purpose CPU or GPU speed. |
| Memory and storage | Choose capacity that suits your workload and expected ownership period; compare the actual configuration. | Copilot+ models can be sold with different RAM and SSD capacities. |
| Screen and form factor | Check size, resolution, weight, keyboard, touchscreen, and whether you want a clamshell or 2-in-1. | These are model-level choices, not consequences of Copilot+ status. |
| Battery | Prefer like-for-like independent tests with stated conditions; inspect the manufacturer’s test footnotes too. | Catalog battery figures are model-specific “up to” claims, not direct head-to-head test results. |
| Price and support | Compare the current local price for the exact configuration, warranty, and repair or service options. | There is no universal value winner without a market, workload, and budget. |
How to read performance and battery claims
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as having “top tier speed and battery life” and an NPU that performs 40 trillion operations per second. The 40-TOPS figure is a category specification, not evidence that the whole laptop will be faster than a traditional model. It is most relevant to workloads that use the NPU.

Microsoft’s catalog lists model-specific “up to” battery figures, with listed examples ranging from 12 hours to 27 hours for an XPS configuration. These are manufacturer claims, not results from a shared independent test. Do not compare them as if each laptop had been measured under the same workload, screen settings, or conditions; verify the exact model and its footnote before relying on a number. The catalog’s current listings may change.
The available sources do not establish a universal performance or battery-life winner between Copilot+ and traditional laptops. For either category, look for independent tests of the exact model and the work you need it to do.

A practical decision checklist
- Write down the applications, accessories, and recurring tasks the laptop must support.
- Decide whether the Copilot+ experiences you would use are worth including in your shortlist.
- Verify app, driver, and peripheral support for each exact model and processor architecture.
- Compare processor tests relevant to your workload, plus memory, storage, display, weight, and form factor.
- Compare battery results only when test methods are meaningfully alike; treat manufacturer “up to” figures as claims, not comparative proof.
- Check current local pricing, warranty, and service options for the configurations you are actually considering.
Microsoft’s laptop buying guide also outlines general factors such as form, features, and use case. Neither the Copilot+ designation nor a single headline specification can replace checking the model that is available to you.
