Yes, you can use a Nintendo Switch 2 with purchases from another country’s eShop, but the Nintendo Account country controls the storefront, and every purchase remains tied to the account that paid for it. The practical rules are strict: an eShop code must match the account’s region, downloadable content (DLC) must match the base game’s release region, and changing countries can leave balance behind and disrupt payment, reservations, or renewals.
The safest approach is to keep your everyday account in the country where you normally live, use a second account only for a specific legitimate regional need, and record the region of every imported game before buying DLC, an upgrade, or a download code.

How regions work on Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo says the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch always matches the country setting on your Nintendo Account. The console’s physical location does not select the storefront. When you change the account’s country, the new country’s eShop appears the next time the console connects.
This means region management is primarily an account-administration issue. A Switch 2 can be used while traveling, but the account country determines which shop you see, which payment instruments are likely to work, and which codes can be redeemed. A game bought through one account is not transferred to another account merely because both accounts are used on the same console.

The account country selects the eShop
Changing country can be useful when a title, language version, release date, or add-on is available only in another storefront. It also creates obligations. Nintendo says remaining eShop balance does not carry over when the country is changed, and a card issued in one region may not work in another region’s eShop.
Before changing country, use the balance attached to the current country and review any pending reservations or automatic renewals. Also confirm that your payment method is accepted in the destination region. Treat a country change as an account-management decision, not as a temporary switch that preserves every financial setting.
Digital ownership follows the purchasing account
Downloadable software is tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased it. The account, rather than the console or the person holding the console, is the ownership record Nintendo uses for redownloads and virtual game cards.
Nintendo allows a Nintendo Account to load virtual game cards on up to two consoles. Once a virtual game card is loaded on a console, any user on that console can play the software. On a console where the card is not loaded, the purchasing account must be online to play, and other users cannot play that software there.
For households with more than one Switch 2, decide which two consoles should carry the account’s virtual game cards. Moving a card between consoles changes where other local users can play without the purchasing account being online.

Can you buy a Switch 2 game from another country’s eShop?
You can access another country’s storefront by changing the country setting on a Nintendo Account, but access does not remove the regional conditions attached to payment, codes, DLC, and ownership. A foreign storefront is therefore practical only when you can support it throughout the life of the purchase.
When a separate account is the cleaner option
Keep your primary account in the country where you normally live and buy. Create or use another account only when you have a clear, legitimate reason for a separate storefront, such as a different release schedule or a regional version that your primary shop does not offer. Write down which account owns each game, DLC package, and upgrade. Otherwise, a later redownload can look like a missing purchase when the wrong account is open.

Codes and eShop cards are region-bound
Nintendo states that a download code can be redeemed only in a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game. An Americas code, for example, cannot be redeemed with a Japan-region account. The code’s printed or listed region must match the Nintendo Account country and the game release region.
eShop cards follow the same principle. Nintendo says cards are compatible only with the country or region where they were sold. A card purchased for another region cannot be replaced, exchanged, or refunded by Nintendo. A lower price in a foreign currency is not a safe reason to buy one unless you already know the card matches the account you will use.
Before you buy credit or a code
- Check the country shown on the Nintendo Account that will redeem it.
- Read the card or code listing for an explicit country or region designation; do not rely on the seller’s currency alone.
- Confirm that the intended game is released in that same region.
- Keep the receipt and code details until redemption succeeds.
- Use a reputable seller and verify availability, denomination, and seller legitimacy at the time of purchase.
Before you buy credit: choose a Nintendo eShop gift card for your exact country or region. Nintendo’s policy means a wrongly regional card cannot be exchanged or refunded, so checking the account country first is cheaper than trying to correct the mistake later.

DLC compatibility: match the game’s release region
Nintendo’s regional FAQ gives a direct rule: DLC works only with games released for the same region as the DLC. The console’s location and the language displayed in a game are not reliable substitutes for the release region.

- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game.
- Open the game’s software options.
- Choose Software Information, then Support Information.
- Note the supported region shown for the base game.
- Compare that region with the DLC listing and with the Nintendo Account country that will purchase the add-on.
Perform this check for imported physical games as well as digital games. A DLC package that appears in an eShop search can still fail to attach to a base game from a different release region.
Switch 2 upgrades and extra content
Apply the same region check before buying a Switch 2 upgrade or any other add-on. Record the base game’s supported region when you buy it, rather than trying to identify it months later from memory. If a game is shared between accounts, make sure the account buying the upgrade is the one that owns the compatible base software or has access to the correct virtual game card.
Changing your Nintendo Account country safely
A country change affects the storefront the next time the console connects. Plan the change around the account’s financial and subscription state.
Checklist before changing country
- Spend the remaining eShop balance in the current country; Nintendo says it does not carry over.
- Review pending reservations and cancel or complete anything that could be affected by the change.
- Check automatic renewals and decide whether they should remain active before the change.
- Confirm that a payment card or other accepted payment method is available in the destination region.
- Record the account that owns each digital game, DLC package, and upgrade.
- Write down the supported region for imported games so future DLC purchases can be matched correctly.
After the country change
Reconnect the Switch 2 so it can load the destination country’s eShop. Test the payment method with the intended purchase rather than assuming a card issued in the previous region will work. Do not buy region-specific credit until the new storefront is visible and the account country is confirmed.

If you change countries frequently, use separate accounts instead of repeatedly moving one account’s country. Separate accounts make ownership easier to audit, although you must remember which account bought each item.
Redownloading a game or DLC
Redownload from the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. In Virtual Game Cards or Nintendo eShop purchase history, select the purchasing account and locate the title. Nintendo says loading a game’s virtual game card redownloads the game and its purchased DLC.
Recovery steps when content is missing
- Open Virtual Game Cards and switch to the account that originally paid for the game or add-on.
- Check the account’s Nintendo eShop purchase history for the title.
- Confirm that the current Nintendo Account country matches the purchase region.
- Compare the base game’s supported region with the DLC or upgrade region.
- Load the virtual game card on the intended console to start the redownload.
- After installation, launch the base game and check its add-on or downloadable-content menu.
If the item shows a price instead of a Virtual Game Card, the usual causes are the wrong account, a purchase-history mismatch, or a region mismatch. Switch accounts first; if the purchase is still absent, verify the country and the game’s supported region before paying again.

“My download code says it is for the wrong region.”
The code is locked to a different eShop region. Nintendo does not make an Americas code redeemable in a Japan-region eShop, for example. Use a code labeled for the account’s country, or change your purchasing plan before buying another code. Do not assume customer support can exchange a code bought for the wrong region.

“The DLC is installed, but the game does not see it.”
Check the base game’s region through Software Information > Support Information. DLC must match the base game’s release region. Also verify that the account that bought the DLC is present and that the compatible game is loaded as a virtual game card on the console.

“The game disappeared after I changed country.”
Open Virtual Game Cards with the account that bought it and inspect purchase history. Digital ownership did not move to a different account; the title may simply be hidden because the wrong account is active or the current region does not match the purchase context. Redownload from the purchasing account after confirming the region.
“Another user on the console cannot play my digital game.”
Load the game’s virtual game card on that console. Any user can play while it is loaded. If the card is loaded elsewhere, the purchasing account must be online on the second console, and other users cannot play that software there.
“My payment card is declined in the foreign eShop.”
Nintendo warns that a card issued in one region may not work in another region’s eShop. Use a payment method accepted in the account’s current country or buy correctly region-matched eShop credit. Changing country solely to use a card from the previous region may leave balance and renewal problems behind.

Practical examples
Example: an imported game with local DLC
You buy a game released for Japan through a Japan-region account, then search your normal country’s eShop for its expansion. The expansion may be incompatible because DLC must match the base game’s release region. Buy the add-on from the matching region and account, and keep both purchases associated with the account that can load the game’s virtual game card.
Example: a second console in the household
One account owns the digital library and two Switch 2 consoles are used. Load the virtual game card on the console where other household users need offline access. On the other console, the purchasing account must be online to play that software, and other users cannot launch it independently.
Example: moving to another country
Before changing the account country, spend the old balance, review reservations and automatic renewals, and confirm a destination-region payment method. After reconnecting, verify the new storefront before buying credit. Existing purchases remain associated with the purchasing account, but the storefront, payment acceptance, and future code compatibility follow the new country setting.
A repeatable region-management routine
- Keep the primary Nintendo Account in your normal country.
- Use a separate regional account only for a specific need and document its ownership.
- For every imported game, record the supported region from the software’s Support Information.
- Match DLC, upgrades, download codes, and eShop cards to that region and the purchasing account.
- Before a country change, clear balance and review reservations, renewals, and payment options.
- When content is missing, check the purchasing account, Virtual Game Cards, purchase history, and region match before buying anything again.
Following this routine prevents the most expensive errors: unusable codes, incompatible DLC, stranded eShop balance, and libraries that appear lost only because the wrong account or storefront is active.
