Limited resources turn every firefight into a budget decision. Before you shoot, know whether you have enough ammunition for the likely target, enough armor or shields to survive a mistake, at least one safe way to recover, and a route to resupply or retreat. After a fight, pause long enough to reassess instead of automatically chasing the next enemy.
This guide applies that rolling-budget method to arena shooters, battle royales, survival shooters, and extraction games. The exact item names, stack sizes, animation times, and regeneration rules vary by title and patch, but the decisions are consistent: spend cheap resources on cheap problems, protect health with armor, heal only from controlled positions, and loot only when the risk is worth the return.

The resource-budget mindset
Think of ammunition, armor or shields, and healing as one combat budget rather than three unrelated inventories. A fight is profitable when the resources you spend are smaller than the tactical value you gain: a required elimination, a safe route, an objective, or access to better supplies. A fight is losing when it consumes a magazine, several plates, and a long heal for an opponent you could have bypassed.
Scarcity should change your next decision. In its explanation of Battlefield V’s Attrition system, EA/DICE described limited bullets and medical supplies as a reason to assess risk and adapt after every encounter. The same principle works in any FPS with finite resources: your status after the last fight determines which fight you can afford next.

Run a five-second check before entering danger
- Ammunition: count loaded rounds, reserve rounds, and whether the reserve matches the weapons you actually carry.
- Protection: note your current armor or shield state and how many replacement plates, cells, or batteries remain.
- Health: identify the fastest item you can use safely and whether a full heal is available.
- Exit: mark hard cover, a break in line of sight, a fallback route, and the nearest known resupply point.
- Objective pressure: account for the ring, extraction timer, mission requirement, or squad position before taking a detour.
If one of those categories is critical, change the plan before the first shot. That may mean switching to a range-appropriate weapon, taking a safer angle, asking a teammate for supplies, or disengaging.
How to stop running out of ammo
Set a reserve before the first shot
Keep enough ammunition for one normal engagement plus an emergency reload. The exact number depends on magazine size, enemy durability, recoil, and the game mode, so use a practical test: if your first target survives the opening magazine, can you reload and finish the fight without being empty? If not, you are already below your personal reserve.
In games with several ammunition categories, do not fill backpack slots with rounds that neither equipped weapon uses. Apex Legends’ beginner guidance explicitly tells players to match ammunition to their weapon type and color. Apply that rule whenever inventory space is limited: carry the ammo your guns consume, and replace mismatched stacks with armor, healing, or utility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch ammunition to the engagement
Use each weapon where it is efficient. Battlefield V’s Attrition guidance warns that forcing a close-range weapon to make long-range kills costs more bullets. A submachine gun used beyond its reliable range may require repeated bursts, while a rifle or marksman weapon can solve the same problem with fewer rounds. The resource cost includes missed shots, extra reloads, and the time during which you remain exposed.
- Use high-damage or precision weapons for distant, partially exposed targets when the sightline is stable.
- Use automatic weapons for close or moving targets where their rate of fire creates a reliable time-to-kill.
- Stop firing when the target reaches hard cover unless finishing them has a clear tactical payoff.
- Do not reload automatically after every burst if the magazine still contains enough rounds for the immediate threat; a wasted reload can be more dangerous than a partially filled magazine.
Spend cheap resources on cheap targets
Weak enemies are an opportunity to preserve premium ammunition. Use melee, a low-cost ability, or a weapon with abundant drops when the game rewards that choice. Bungie’s Marathon starter tips specifically recommend knifing low-level enemies to conserve ammo. This is not a universal command to melee everything: use it only when the enemy is isolated, the animation is safe, and the noise or time will not expose you.

DOOM Eternal builds conservation into its combat loop. Glory Kills restore health, Chainsaw executions restore ammunition, and Flame Belch followed by shooting a burning enemy produces armor. These tools are not merely finishing moves; they are replenishment actions. Use them when the arena gives you enough space to perform the animation, and avoid forcing one while another enemy can interrupt you.
Track the cost of a kill, not just the kill itself
After an engagement, ask what it actually cost. A kill that used one magazine and no armor may be sustainable; a kill that required repeated reloads, several plates, and a full heal may leave you unable to survive the next contact. Battlefield V’s developer explanation frames the choice as whether to engage while down to a last magazine or play safely. Adopt the same question before committing: What will I have left if this target takes the maximum reasonable amount of effort?

- Keep the weapon currently doing most of your damage supplied first.
- Carry enough reserve for one fight, one emergency reload, and the possibility of a third party.
- When the reserve falls below that level, make resupply the next objective unless the zone or mission forces an immediate fight.
- Do not take a long detour for a low-value ammo stack if moving exposes you to enemies or the closing zone.
Electronic Arts’ Battlefield REDSEC battle-royale guide calls ammunition the most important resource outside your life. That does not mean hoarding every box. It means recognizing that a full armor bar cannot win a fight if your weapon cannot complete the damage cycle.
Armor and shields: protect health before it is exposed
Understand the damage order
Armor or shields buy time for health. In REDSEC, once the armor bar is broken, subsequent damage reaches health; plates can be replaced through a short action. Apex separates shield cells and batteries from health syringes and med kits. Treat those as two different resource classes, even when the interface displays them side by side.
Replacing armor before exposing yourself is usually more efficient than healing health after it has been damaged. A plate, cell, or battery often has a shorter action than a full health restoration and restores the buffer that lets you survive the next burst. This is a priority rule, not an absolute command: if health is critically low, restore enough health to avoid dying to a stray shot before attempting a longer armor action.

Choose between armor and health by danger level
- Armor broken, health mostly full: take cover and replace armor first. Further shots are now hitting the more valuable and less easily restored pool.
- Armor partly damaged, health chipped: use the shortest safe action that raises your effective survivability. If a quick health item is available and the next hit would be lethal, health may come first.
- Both critical: break line of sight, create distance, and use the item that prevents immediate death. Do not begin a long animation in a position an enemy can pre-fire.
- Safe between fights: restore both pools before rotating, but preserve at least one emergency item rather than spending every consumable for a small deficit.
Count replacement actions, not just plates
Inventory quantity can mislead you. Three plates do not equal three guaranteed survivals if each replacement is interrupted by movement, noise, or an enemy swing. Learn the title’s animation length and interruption behavior, then plan around completed actions. If a zone is closing or an opponent is near, a partial restoration that finishes before movement may be better than a full restoration that leaves you trapped.
Healing without becoming an easy target
Heal only from a controlled lull
Healing is safest after you secure hard cover, break line of sight, or create enough distance that an enemy cannot reach you before the animation ends. Battlefield V’s beginner guidance emphasizes using cover and team support; its Attrition system also makes medical supplies scarce enough that an exposed heal can waste the item and the life it was meant to save.
Do not equate “not currently being shot” with safety. Listen for footsteps, watch likely flanks, and consider whether the opponent can throw a grenade or use a mobility ability to reach you. If you cannot answer those questions, move first and heal second.
Pick the shortest effective heal
Use a quick item for minor damage when the next fight is imminent, and reserve a full heal for a protected pause or a large deficit. In Battlefield V, the Medical Pouch restores full health, while other games divide recovery into fast syringes and slower med kits. Marathon’s Smart Heal selects the most effective healing item for the situation. These are title-specific systems, so verify the item’s timing and interruption rules in your game rather than assuming all “med” items behave alike.
- Move behind cover or out of the enemy’s line of sight.
- Reload or switch to a weapon that can answer a push immediately after healing.
- Use the shortest item that removes the lethal risk.
- Cancel or reposition if audio, damage indicators, or a teammate’s callout shows that the enemy is closing.
- Complete a full heal only when the extra time improves your odds more than moving would.
Preserve one recovery option
Do not spend every healing item to reach maximum health after a minor exchange. Keep at least one fast recovery option for the next unexpected burst, unless the match is ending or a guaranteed resupply is immediately available. The reserve is especially important in extraction and survival shooters, where you may not find another medical item during the run.

When and how to loot after a fight
Secure first, loot second
Loot is valuable only when the risk is acceptable. Before opening a container or searching a defeated player, check whether the fight attracted a third party, whether another enemy has a line of sight, and whether your squad can cover the approach. Battlefield V recommends looting defeated players when safe. “Safe” means more than a quiet screen: it means you have a defensible position and a plan for an interruption.
Use a deficit-first priority order
- Immediate survival: take the ammunition for the weapon you are using, then armor or shields if your protection is damaged.
- Recovery: take healing that replaces what you spent, prioritizing the item you can use in the next fight.
- Utility: collect grenades, mobility tools, keys, or mission items that change your route or win condition.
- Optimization: upgrade a weapon or stock spare supplies only after the critical deficit is solved.
Marathon points players toward containers and ammo crates, and notes that outskirts containers are more likely to contain ammunition or healing. Its guidance also emphasizes bringing plenty of both because little may be found during a run. REDSEC lists enemy drops, chests, vehicles, and resupply call-ins as additional sources. Use the source that gives the best value for the least exposure rather than crossing an open area for a marginal upgrade.
Know when to abandon a loot pile
- The zone or extraction timer makes the detour more dangerous than the supplies are worth.
- Your team cannot cover the approach or watch the likely third-party angle.
- You already have enough for the next engagement and the remaining items are upgrades rather than necessities.
- The location is exposed, noisy, or likely to be watched by the defeated player’s teammates.
Turn squad roles into a shared economy
Ask before a teammate becomes empty
Call out low ammunition, broken armor, or missing healing before the next fight. A teammate who knows you are down to one magazine can change the entry angle, share a stack, or delay the rotation. Waiting until you are empty turns a manageable shortage into a team emergency.
Use support tools instead of duplicating supplies
EA’s Battlefield V boot-camp guidance tells Support players to distribute Ammo Pouches and Medics to distribute Medical Pouches. Use class tools before every player searches independently. A shared pouch can save a dangerous loot trip and lets the squad preserve personal reserves.
Stay close enough to benefit from support, but not so close that one grenade or burst damages everyone. Apex’s ping system allows players to mark loot and enemy positions without voice chat; use it to communicate a specific need, such as matching ammunition or a shield replacement, rather than a vague request for “stuff.”
Best Value
Assign a resupply responsibility
- One player watches the route and possible flank while another searches.
- The player with the safest inventory space carries surplus team ammunition or healing.
- The support or medic role distributes supplies before the squad enters a high-risk area.
- Everyone confirms the next destination so a resupply stop does not split the team.
How the resource loop differs by FPS type
| Game or mode pattern | Main replenishment sources | Best conservation habit | Key danger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attrition-style multiplayer | Class pouches, defeated players, map supplies, and controlled resupply points | Choose range-appropriate weapons and decide whether a low-ammo fight is necessary | Winning one duel but entering the next with no ammunition or medical support |
| Battle royale | Ground loot, enemy drops, chests, vehicles, and resupply call-ins | Match ammo to your weapons and rotate toward supplies without ignoring zone pressure | Looting an exposed body or detouring into a third-party angle |
| Survival or extraction shooter | Containers, ammo crates, enemy bodies, crafting, barter, and safe-route caches | Enter with a reserve because little may be found during the run; use melee on safe weak targets | Losing the entire run while chasing a marginal upgrade |
| Resource-loop arena shooter | Combat actions that directly restore resources | Plan fights around the game’s replenishment actions rather than treating them as emergency buttons | Attempting a Glory Kill, Chainsaw, or Flame Belch sequence while exposed |
Title-specific lessons you can apply immediately
Battlefield V: scarcity changes tactics
EA/DICE’s Attrition explanation says the scarcity of bullets and medical supplies makes players assess risks and change tactics. The practical consequence is to stop treating every visible enemy as a mandatory target. If your squad is low on ammunition or medical support, hold a defensible position, use class pouches, or move toward a resupply route instead of forcing another exchange.
Battlefield REDSEC: armor is a time buffer
REDSEC’s battle-royale guidance describes ammunition as the most important resource outside your life. Its armor model makes the priority clear: once the armor bar is gone, new damage reaches health. Replace plates from cover, and consider enemy drops, chests, vehicles, and resupply call-ins when planning a rotation.
Apex Legends: match the ammo and separate shields from health
Apex’s beginner instructions identify ammunition by weapon type and color and distinguish shield cells or batteries from syringes and med kits. Keep both categories in your inventory. A shield shortage and a health shortage are not interchangeable, and picking up a large stack of the wrong ammo can crowd out the resource you actually need.
DOOM Eternal: the enemy is part of the supply chain
DOOM Eternal restores health through Glory Kills, ammunition through Chainsaw executions, and armor through Flame Belch followed by shooting the burning enemy. The lesson is to plan a safe sequence that converts enemy bodies into the resource you lack. If the arena is too dangerous for the animation, fall back or weaken the surrounding threats first.
Marathon: enter prepared and convert resources deliberately
Bungie’s March 5, 2026 starter tips say, “Bring plenty of ammo and healing items. You won’t find a lot in-run.” The same guidance points to ammo crates, melee against low-level enemies, Smart Heal, and barter conversion. Entering with a reserve matters more in an extraction run because a shortage can end the entire attempt, not merely one firefight.
A decision framework for the next fight
Take the fight when all four conditions are favorable
- You have enough ammunition for the likely target and an emergency reload.
- Your armor or shields are intact enough to absorb an error.
- You can reach cover or a retreat route if the first attack fails.
- The reward—an objective, position, elimination, or supplies—justifies the expected cost.
Disengage when one condition is decisive
Leave when you are at the last magazine, armor is broken with no safe replacement, healing would require an exposed animation, or the objective can be completed another way. Disengaging is not a failed fight; it is a way to preserve the budget that lets you win the next one. Use smoke, doors, elevation, hard cover, vehicles, or a teammate’s pressure to create the distance you need.
Reassess after every engagement
Perform the same short sequence after the area is secure: reload, count reserve ammunition, inspect armor and health, replace only the urgent deficit, then choose between looting, rotating, holding, or retreating. This prevents the common mistake of pushing with a nearly empty weapon because the previous fight ended successfully.

| Spending every medical item between fights | A surprise engagement leaves no recovery option | Keep one fast heal unless the match is ending or resupply is guaranteed |
| Ignoring team support | Several players make separate risky searches for the same resource | Call out shortages and use pouches, pings, or shared drops |
A practice routine that makes conservation automatic
- Inventory drill: at the start of a match, name your two weapons, their ammunition categories, your reserve threshold, and your fastest heal.
- Range drill: notice which weapon you use at each distance and stop firing when the target reaches cover unless the finish is worth the cost.
- Cover drill: identify two healing positions and one retreat route before entering a contested area.
- Post-fight drill: after every elimination, reload, inspect armor and health, and decide whether to loot or move before touching a container.
- Team drill: call “low ammo,” “broken armor,” or “need heal” early enough for a teammate to respond.
Patch changes can alter item names, stack limits, regeneration rules, and balance. Use the game’s current training area or practice mode to verify animation times and interruption behavior, then update your reserve rule for the mode you actually play.
Quick Recap
Quick reference checklist
- Before a fight: matching ammo, emergency reload, usable armor, one safe recovery option, and an exit route.
- During a fight: use the weapon at its effective range, stop wasting rounds on hard cover, and disengage when the exchange turns negative.
- After a fight: secure the area, reload, restore urgent armor or health, then loot deficits before upgrades.
- In a squad: communicate shortages, stay within support range, and share class resources before making a dangerous solo search.
- In an extraction or survival run: enter with a reserve because replenishment may be sparse, and abandon marginal loot when the route or timer makes it unsafe.
