To manage Filter Keys in Windows 11, open Accessibility settings, select Keyboard, and switch Filter Keys on or off. When it is on, Windows adjusts keyboard sensitivity so it can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes. When it is off, keys are accepted at normal timing. The fastest route is Windows logo key+U, which opens Accessibility settings directly. Microsoft also documents the route Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

Open and change Filter Keys

  1. Press Windows logo key+U, or select Start > Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Select Keyboard.
  3. Turn the Filter Keys switch On to have Windows ignore brief or repeated keystrokes. Turn it Off to return to normal key handling.
  4. With the switch on, review the controls listed under Filter Keys: Slow Keys, Bounce Keys, and Repeat Keys, along with their wait settings. Change only the behavior that matches the problem you are trying to fix.
  5. If keys seem delayed or dropped after you enable the feature, return to the same page and check the wait settings before turning the switch off.

Microsoft’s support article on making input devices easier to use states: “Turn on the Filter keys switch to set the sensitivity of the keyboard so it can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes.” The article covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. What the Filter Keys controls do

Filter Keys groups several timing behaviors. Each one addresses a different kind of accidental input, so it helps to know which one matches your symptom before you change anything. The descriptions below come from Microsoft’s Settings catalog, checked on 7 October 2026. The catalog does not carry a publication date.

Slow Keys

Slow Keys makes Windows wait before accepting a keystroke. A key has to be held for the set period before it registers, which filters out light, accidental taps.

Bounce Keys

Bounce Keys makes Windows wait before accepting another keystroke on the same key. It is meant to ignore unintended repeats, such as a key that registers twice when you press it once.

Repeat Keys

Repeat Keys delays the repeat that normally occurs when a key is held down. It has separate wait controls for the first repeat and for subsequent repeats, so you can set how long a held key pauses before it starts repeating.

A single tap registers twice Bounce Keys Adds a wait before the same key is accepted again
Light, accidental touches register Slow Keys Requires a key to be held for a set time before it is accepted

Troubleshoot delayed or dropped key presses

  • Keys feel slow: check the Slow Keys wait setting. A long wait is the most likely cause of a noticeable delay when the feature is on.
  • Repeated letters still appear: confirm Filter Keys is on, then review Bounce Keys and Repeat Keys.
  • Keys stop registering after a change: return to Filter Keys, reset the wait values to a shorter setting, and test in a text field such as Notepad.
  • Problem continues with Filter Keys off: the cause is outside these settings. Keyboard hardware, another input utility, or a driver issue may be involved. The sources reviewed here do not cover those causes.
