Discord’s own support guidance says voice only works through VPNs that support UDP, so UDP support is the first thing to check on any provider. The shortlist below uses that screen, along with the troubleshooting steps Discord itself recommends, and it names the limits you should expect.
What Discord says about VPNs and voice
Discord’s “Voice Connection Errors” support article, last updated July 24, 2026, states: “Check your VPN (Discord only works on VPNs that have UDP).” That sentence is the most useful compatibility rule available from Discord. It means a VPN that only tunnels TCP traffic, or that has UDP disabled, can leave text and images working while voice fails.

UDP support is a necessary condition, not a guarantee. A VPN that advertises UDP can still produce connection errors depending on the server you choose, the network you are on, and how the provider configures its tunnel. Discord also lists VPNs and firewalls among the things that can interfere with voice, so a VPN is sometimes the cause of the problem rather than the cure.
The five VPNs to shortlist
Comparitech’s “Best VPNs for Discord so you can access it securely anywhere” guide, updated June 14, 2026, ranks NordVPN first, followed by Surfshark, Total VPN, ProtonVPN, and ExpressVPN. Comparitech says it considered speed, network suitability, and its own testing, and that it tested 70 well-known VPNs. Those are Comparitech’s stated methods and results; the list below carries its ranking, not an independent test by this site.

Discord does not rank or endorse any VPN provider, so the UDP column reads “not stated” for every name. Treat the table as a starting list. Before you pay, check each provider’s current documentation for UDP (or the protocol it uses in place of it), and test voice on the server you intend to use.

- UDP in your app and platform: Confirm the provider documents UDP for the app and operating system you use, not only for the website.
- Server choice where you are: Check that servers exist in your country or a nearby jurisdiction and that you can switch between them.
- Stability and latency for voice: Join a voice channel and watch for drops, delay, or robotic audio over a full session, not just a single test call.
- Privacy and transparency: Read the no-logs claims and whether an independent audit is published, and check who owns and operates the company.
- Device support and simultaneous connections: Confirm the plan covers every device you use Discord on.
- Ease of switching servers: A provider where you cannot quickly change server makes the troubleshooting steps below harder to follow.
- Price and refund terms: Check them on the provider’s own site on the day you buy, since promotional pricing changes.
Fixing voice errors when you are on a VPN
Discord voice errors such as “RTC Connecting,” “No Route,” and “ICE Checking” are often network problems rather than account problems. Work through these steps in order:
- Check Discord’s status page and your own internet connection to rule out an outage.
- Confirm whether only voice is failing or all of Discord is failing. Text that loads while voice fails points toward UDP or routing.
- Switch to a different VPN server, preferably in another location, and retry the voice channel.
- Disconnect the VPN briefly to see whether voice works without it. If it does, the VPN path is the likely cause.
- Review firewall and antivirus settings, since either can block Discord’s voice traffic. Allow Discord through them rather than turning protection off entirely.
- If the VPN connects but voice still fails, check whether the provider supports UDP on your app and platform, and contact its support with the server and error message.
If none of these steps works, the problem may be on Discord’s side. Discord directs users to its status page and support channels in that case.

DNS changes as a separate fix
Discord recommends Google Public DNS or Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for connection problems such as degraded voice quality, images that will not load, update loops, and inability to connect to voice. A DNS change is a troubleshooting step for DNS-related connectivity issues. It does not reliably bypass every network restriction, so do not treat it as a substitute for a VPN when access is blocked by policy.
Discord’s “Changing Your DNS Provider” article gives platform-specific instructions. Use those instructions instead of copying addresses from older articles, because Discord notes that the addresses and steps can change.

School and work networks
If Discord is blocked on a managed school or workplace network, the network administrator controls that access, and Discord says administrators may block it. Using a VPN to get around a managed network can break the rules you agreed to. Ask the administrator first, or use a personal connection for Discord.

A VPN changes the network path and the IP address that websites and services see. It does not make your Discord activity invisible to Discord. Discord has said that the Nitro privacy perk built on Cloudflare WARP+ did not provide IP masking for Discord platform activity and did not affect activity or data shared directly with Discord. That experiment ended on March 4, 2026, and Discord’s FAQ says it is no longer available, so it should not be treated as a current Nitro benefit.

For Discord-specific data, use the controls in Discord’s own settings. Discord’s “Privacy Preserving Products” page describes controls for usage statistics, personalization, direct-message filters, and server privacy defaults. A VPN does not replace these settings.
Why “access from anywhere” is not a guarantee
Whether a VPN restores Discord access depends on the network doing the blocking, the country you are in, the server and IP address you use, and the provider’s configuration. A server that works today may be blocked later, and a provider that works in one country may have no useful servers in another. Comparitech’s claim that VPNs can restore access is its own editorial position, not a Discord commitment. Plan for a server that works in your location, and test it before relying on it.
In short, pick a provider that documents UDP for your platform, test voice on a server near you, and check Discord’s troubleshooting steps before you assume the service itself is blocked.
