Manage Bitcoin volatility by sizing your exposure so a severe loss would not derail your finances, avoiding leverage you cannot afford to lose, and deciding in advance when you will review or reduce your position. Bitcoin has not reliably acted as a safe haven during market stress, and historical studies show its relationship with stocks and macroeconomic news changes by period. No allocation or hedge is guaranteed to protect you.
Start with how much loss you can absorb
Bitcoin’s price can move sharply during a macroeconomic shock. Before deciding whether to buy, hold, or sell, consider what a large decline in your Bitcoin holdings would mean for your essential expenses, near-term plans, and overall financial position. The smaller the position, the less of your portfolio is directly exposed to Bitcoin’s price swings.

There is no universal Bitcoin allocation established by the cited research. What is suitable, if anything, depends on your risk capacity, time horizon, liquidity needs, and jurisdiction. Treat any allocation as a decision about potential loss, not as a forecast about Bitcoin’s next move.
Set a plan before the next shock
A written plan can reduce the chance that a sudden headline or price move makes the decision for you. Choose rules that fit your circumstances; these are process suggestions, not a tested strategy or a guarantee of better results.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Set an exposure limit. Decide how much of your portfolio you are willing and able to have exposed to Bitcoin. Include any Bitcoin held through different accounts or products when assessing your total exposure.
- Choose review triggers. Specify what would make you reassess your position, such as a change in your need for cash, your time horizon, your capacity for loss, or the role Bitcoin plays in your portfolio. Avoid relying on a single headline to predict where prices will go.
- Define what rebalancing means for you. If you choose to rebalance, decide beforehand what conditions would prompt it and how you would implement the change. Rebalancing can involve selling after a rise or buying after a fall; neither action guarantees a gain or prevents a loss.
- Check practical constraints. Before acting, consider access to funds, custody arrangements, trading conditions, taxes, and the rules that apply where you live.
Do not mistake Bitcoin for a dependable safe haven
“Safe haven” is a claim about how an asset behaves when other markets are under stress, not a promise that it will retain value. A Kansas City Federal Reserve study comparing daily returns from January 1995 through February 2020 found that 10-year U.S. Treasuries consistently showed safe-haven behavior, gold did so occasionally, and Bitcoin did not. The authors also said that during March 2020 none of the assets could be classified with confidence as a safe haven.
Bitcoin’s relationship with stocks has also varied. The International Monetary Fund reported a Bitcoin–S&P 500 return correlation of 0.01 in 2017–19 and 0.36 in 2020–21. In the pandemic period it studied, Bitcoin volatility explained about one-sixth of S&P 500 volatility. These are historical estimates for specified periods, not reliable readings of how Bitcoin will move in the next shock.

Why studies of macro shocks can appear to disagree
Different studies measure different kinds of exposure over different periods, so their results should not be reduced to a rule that Bitcoin always rises or falls after an economic announcement.

That result concerns intraday responses to the news surprises the study examined.
- Broader equity exposure over time: An August 2026 Chicago Federal Reserve working paper estimated time-varying equity betas and found Bitcoin’s equity exposure rose and became statistically positive around 2020. The paper is a working paper; its page says working papers are unedited and that the views do not necessarily reflect the Chicago Fed or the Federal Reserve System.
- Stress-period co-movement: The Kansas City Fed study tested asset relationships during defined stress periods, while the IMF’s 2022 analysis reported co-movement and spillover estimates for 2017–21.
These findings can coexist: Bitcoin may show little measured response to particular scheduled news surprises in one sample while exhibiting greater broad equity exposure over a longer period or in risk-off conditions.

Avoid leverage if forced selling would be damaging
Borrowing to increase a Bitcoin position magnifies the effect of price moves. If the market moves against a leveraged position, a margin call or liquidation can force a sale and lock in a loss. Forced liquidations can also add to selling pressure across the market.
The Bank for International Settlements reported that Bitcoin fell about 50% from its 2025 highs during its review window of November 29, 2025–March 5, 2026, and said liquidations of leveraged long positions probably exacerbated the sell-off. That is a dated example of how leverage can contribute to a decline, not a forecast or a measure of what will happen in a future shock.

Compare alternatives by their risks, not by their labels
Moving out of Bitcoin does not automatically move money into a safe asset. The historical evidence does not establish that gold, bonds, cash, or stablecoins will protect a portfolio during every future shock. Compare any alternative against the role you need it to serve and the risks it introduces.

| Bitcoin | The Kansas City Fed found it did not consistently show safe-haven behavior in its study; the IMF reported different Bitcoin–S&P 500 correlations across 2017–19 and 2020–21. | Possible drawdown, portfolio co-movement, liquidity, custody, leverage exposure, and applicable tax treatment. |
| 10-year U.S. Treasuries | The Kansas City Fed study found they consistently exhibited safe-haven behavior across the historical period it examined. It also found that no asset in its analysis could confidently be classified as a safe haven during March 2020. | Whether the asset fits your time horizon and liquidity needs, along with applicable market and tax rules. The historical result is not a guarantee for a future shock. |
| Gold | The Kansas City Fed study found occasional safe-haven behavior, not a consistent result; it could not confidently classify gold as a safe haven in March 2020. | Possible drawdown, co-movement during the stress that matters to you, liquidity, custody, and applicable tax treatment. |
| Stablecoins | A BIS working paper found stablecoin capitalization declined following U.S. monetary tightening and concluded stablecoins did not act as a safe haven from crypto or traditional financial shocks. | Issuer, reserve, redemption, market, custody, and jurisdiction-specific risks. A stated peg does not remove these risks. |
The comparison is necessarily limited: the cited research does not establish a universal hedge, a dependable future correlation, or a best substitute for Bitcoin. A 2022 New York Fed staff report described the digital-asset ecosystem as highly fragile while finding that adverse digital-asset shocks then had limited spillovers into the traditional financial system. That system-level observation is distinct from the potential loss faced by someone holding Bitcoin.

Account for liquidity, custody, and local rules
Market-price risk is only one part of managing a position. Consider whether you can access funds when needed, how your assets are held, and what counterparty or redemption risks apply to any product you use. A hardware wallet can help with custody, but it cannot reduce Bitcoin’s market-price volatility.
Tax treatment and market rules vary by jurisdiction. The IMF’s 2023 framework called for clear crypto tax treatment and oversight requirements; it does not substitute for the rules that apply to an individual in a particular country or region. Check current local requirements before changing how you hold or trade cryptoassets.
Keep the decision within your own risk limits
Historical relationships can help explain why Bitcoin should not be assumed to hedge a macro shock, but they cannot tell an individual when to buy or sell. Base your decision on your capacity for loss, liquidity needs, time horizon, and the role the position plays in your finances. If a severe decline would put essential plans at risk, reducing exposure or avoiding leverage may be more important than trying to predict the next announcement.
