A full inventory in Over the Hill is not a reason to abandon a trip or throw away a useful recovery item. It is a route-planning problem. Keep the reusable winch, spend Pebbles on additional tool slots, and use the remaining spaces for the specific hazards on your next trail: a portable anchor for treeless ground, a jack for rollovers, planks for short gaps, or a repair kit when collision damage is likely. Change your loadout at the mechanic, and use discovered camps to repair, restock equipped consumables and fast-travel before a limited-use item is gone.
The game starts with one tool slot and allows four. With the right loadout and a deliberate recovery sequence, you can carry less, reach more areas and avoid losing a vehicle—or the only item that can recover it.

How many inventory slots can you unlock?
Every vehicle begins with one tool slot. The maximum is four, so you can add three more slots through upgrades. Maxbit Games lists the prices as 25 Pebbles for the second slot, 50 Pebbles for the third and 75 Pebbles for the fourth: 150 Pebbles in total. GameTruth independently describes the same expansion from one slot to four. These are 2026 game figures; the costs are purchase prices, not recurring fees.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

| Second slot | 2 tools | 25 Pebbles | 25 Pebbles | As soon as a route regularly needs two different recovery methods |
| Third slot | 3 tools | 50 Pebbles | 75 Pebbles | Longer expeditions with mixed terrain |
| Fourth slot | 4 tools | 75 Pebbles | 150 Pebbles | Routes where a gap, rollover, treeless section and damage risk can all occur |
Do not treat four slots as a requirement for every outing. Capacity is still limited even after all upgrades, and most tools other than the winch have limited uses. Buy the next slot when the terrain is repeatedly forcing you to turn around or leave a useful recovery item behind. If a trip has one predictable hazard, a two-tool loadout is more efficient than filling every space.

What each recovery tool actually does
Winch: the permanent baseline
The winch is the one recovery option that does not consume a slot. TechRadar’s 2026 review describes it as reusable, usable as many times as needed and always present in the inventory. For an upright vehicle, first look for a reachable tree, attach the winch and pull while controlling your steering and throttle. Because it is reusable, it should be your default recovery method whenever a suitable anchor exists.
A winch is not magic traction. If the chassis is resting on a rock, spinning the wheels only digs the vehicle in or wastes time. GameTruth’s recovery guide puts the rule plainly: a spinning wheel will not free a vehicle whose chassis is resting on a rock. Stop accelerating, identify the contact point and select a tool that changes the vehicle’s position or creates a better surface.
Portable anchor: a tree substitute
Carry a portable anchor when the route crosses exposed ground, a rocky plateau or any section where trees are too far away for a normal winch attachment. The anchor creates a winching point on otherwise treeless terrain. It is a limited-use item, so reserve it for a genuine recovery rather than placing one as a precaution at every bend.

Car jack: for a vehicle on its side or roof
The jack is the correct response to a rollover. It returns a vehicle lying on its side or roof to its wheels, allowing the winch or normal driving controls to work again. Carry it when the trail has steep side slopes, narrow ledges, uneven rocks or a history of tipping your vehicle. A jack does not replace an anchor: after the vehicle is upright, you may still need a tree or portable anchor to pull away from the rollover point.
Wooden planks: bridge a short gap and improve the contact patch
Planks are for short gaps, ledges and soft or uneven ground where the tires cannot maintain a usable surface. Align them with the wheel tracks before crossing. A crooked plank can leave one wheel unsupported or push the vehicle sideways. Treat planks as a precise construction tool, not a general-purpose traction boost; they have limited uses and are best saved for a visible crossing that the vehicle cannot clear on its own.
Repair kit: protect the return leg
Pack a repair kit when collisions are likely to damage the vehicle before you finish the route. This is especially important on a long expedition with repeated rock contacts, narrow passages or a difficult return trip. A repair kit solves damage; it does not extract a stuck vehicle, flatten a rollover or create a bridge. Pair it with the recovery tool that matches the terrain instead of assuming repairs will fix every failure.

Portable camp: a temporary expedition reset
TechRadar lists the portable camp among the limited-use tools. It is a route-support choice for an expedition that needs a temporary camp away from a discovered one. Because it consumes a slot and has limited uses, choose it when the distance between reliable reset points is the problem—not simply because the inventory has room.

Choose tools from the obstacles you expect, not from a desire to carry every possibility. The table below treats the winch as the reusable baseline and shows what to add in the remaining slots.
| Expected hazard | Recommended additions | Why this combination works | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tree-lined trail with ordinary slopes | No additional recovery item, or a repair kit for a damaging route | The winch has reachable anchors and can be reused | Treeless extraction and rollovers |
| Open, treeless ground | Portable anchor | Creates a winching point where no tree is available | A vehicle resting on a rock or already upside down |
| Steep side slopes and narrow ledges | Car jack; add a repair kit if impacts are common | Recovers a rollover, while the winch handles the upright vehicle | A gap that needs a driving surface |
| Short gaps, broken bridges or soft crossings | Wooden planks | Provides a surface under the wheel tracks | A long-distance pull without an anchor |
| Long route with frequent collision damage | Repair kit plus the obstacle-specific item | Preserves the vehicle for the return trip while covering the main terrain risk | Extraction if the chassis is wedged |
| Remote expedition between camps | Portable camp plus one recovery item suited to the hardest obstacle | Creates a temporary reset point and retains a direct recovery option | Unlimited resupply; limited-use tools still run out |
When the route is uncertain, leaving one slot empty can be the better choice. An empty slot preserves flexibility after scouting the first section and avoids carrying a tool that cannot address the failure you actually encounter. This is particularly useful before a branch where the map does not reveal whether the next problem is a gap, a rollover or a treeless pull.
Pre-trip loadout routine
Use this sequence at the mechanic before leaving. It turns a full inventory into a deliberate plan rather than a last-second guess.
- Study the route. Identify the hardest climb, gap, treeless section and narrow ledge on the planned trail. If one obstacle clearly dominates, build around it first.
- Keep the winch as your default. It is reusable and occupies no purchased tool slot, so do not replace it with a limited-use item.
- Add the matching specialist. Select an anchor for treeless ground, a jack for rollover risk, planks for a short gap or a repair kit for a damage-heavy route. Add a portable camp only when the distance between reset points justifies its slot.
- Decide whether to leave a slot open. On a poorly scouted route, an empty slot is capacity reserved for information you have not gathered yet.
- Set the driving range before the hardest section. Use low range for a steep or slippery climb. The recovery guide says low range improves control and traction; high range is suited to easier travel.
- Check the vehicle’s upgrades and condition. Tires help with traction, suspension or clearance helps over rough ground, and protection is valuable where impacts are expected. Start with a repaired vehicle when the route has no nearby camp.
- Confirm the nearest discovered camp. Know where you can repair, restock equipped consumables and fast-travel before committing the last limited-use item.
What to do when the vehicle becomes stuck
Do not consume a tool simply because the wheels are spinning. Diagnose the obstruction first, then use the least costly recovery method.
1. Stop throttle and inspect the contact point
Release acceleration and look at the wheels, underbody and direction of pull. If the chassis is sitting on a rock, more throttle cannot create clearance. If the tires are on a poor surface but the body is clear, a plank or a controlled winch pull may be enough.

2. Try the reusable winch when an anchor is reachable
For an upright vehicle, attach to a nearby tree and pull while steering toward the clear path. Use short, controlled inputs rather than holding full throttle against the winch. This preserves vehicle control and avoids turning a recoverable position into a rollover.
3. Switch from automatic to manual winching when the pull is wrong
GameTruth recommends manual winching if automatic selection points toward an obstacle. Choose the vehicle attachment side and the anchor yourself. A better angle can pull the chassis away from the rock or align the vehicle with the trail, whereas an automatic point may drag it deeper into the obstruction.
4. Use a portable anchor only when trees cannot do the job
Deploy the anchor on exposed ground when no suitable tree is reachable. Place it so the pull leads toward open terrain, not across the obstacle. Because the anchor is limited-use, confirm that a normal winch cannot reach a safe tree before spending it.
5. Use the jack for a rollover
If the vehicle is on its side or roof, stop trying to drive out. Use the jack to return it to its wheels, then reassess the route and select a winch anchor. Continuing to accelerate while inverted does not replace the jack and can leave you farther from a safe recovery line.
6. Build a surface for a gap
When the obstacle is a short break in the trail, position planks along the wheel tracks. Approach in low range, keep the steering straight over the boards and avoid a high-speed entry that can launch the vehicle sideways. If the gap is too long for the planks, retreat rather than consuming them without a realistic crossing.
7. Repair only after the vehicle is mobile
A repair kit is most useful once the vehicle can move but collision damage threatens the rest of the expedition. Repairing first does not solve a chassis wedged on a rock or a vehicle lying on its roof.

When to return to the mechanic or camp
Visit the mechanic for a loadout change
Loadout changes during an expedition require a visit to the mechanic. If the next region demands a jack instead of the planks you brought, plan the detour rather than expecting to swap tools at the roadside. The mechanic is also the appropriate place to buy slot upgrades and configure vehicle improvements.
Use a discovered camp as a reset point
Camps repair the vehicle, replenish equipped consumables and provide fast travel. Returning to a discovered camp is safer than spending the final limited-use item on a low-probability recovery attempt. A camp is therefore part of your inventory plan: it reduces how much backup equipment you need to carry between reliable stops.
Return before the last item is gone
Turn back when the route still requires a tool you have already consumed, the vehicle is damaged and the return path is difficult, or the next obstacle is outside your current loadout. Retreating with one safe recovery option remaining is usually cheaper than becoming stranded beyond the last camp.
Upgrade order for players who keep running out of capacity
Buy tool capacity before extending trips that repeatedly expose the same limitation. The second slot costs 25 Pebbles, so it is the most efficient early upgrade: it lets you keep the winch and carry one specialist item. The third slot costs 50 Pebbles and supports mixed terrain, while the fourth costs 75 Pebbles and completes the four-slot maximum. Budget 150 Pebbles for all three additions.
Once capacity matches your routes, spend vehicle-upgrade resources on the weakness you encounter most often. Tires address traction problems; suspension or clearance helps the chassis pass over rough ground; protection matters where collisions are frequent. TechRadar notes that speed, grip, protection and tool capacity can all be upgraded, and that upgrades matter for reaching every area. Choose the upgrade that prevents the failure rather than automatically choosing speed.

Two-slot early-game trail
Keep the winch and carry either a portable anchor or a jack. Choose the anchor for an open map with few trees; choose the jack for steep side slopes. If the route contains both hazards, shorten the trip or return to the mechanic for the second-slot upgrade before committing.

Three-slot mixed-terrain expedition
Use the winch, one terrain-specific recovery item and one risk item. For example, a portable anchor covers treeless ground while a repair kit protects the return leg. If the map shows a rollover-prone ledge instead, replace the repair kit with the jack and rely on the nearest camp for repairs.
Four-slot remote route
Carry the winch, portable anchor, jack and either planks or a repair kit. Select planks when the route’s defining obstacle is a short gap; select the repair kit when repeated impacts are more likely than a crossing. A portable camp can replace one of these only when a temporary reset is more valuable than direct recovery coverage.
Common inventory mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Filling every slot before scouting | You spend capacity on tools that do not match the actual route | Leave a slot open on uncertain trips and reassess at the mechanic |
| Using full throttle against a rock | Wheel spin cannot lift a chassis resting on an obstacle | Stop, inspect the contact point and use a better winch angle, jack or planks |
| Trusting automatic winching blindly | The selected anchor can pull toward an obstacle | Switch to manual winching and choose the attachment side and anchor |
| Using an anchor where a tree is reachable | You waste a limited-use item | Check all safe tree anchors before deploying the portable one |
| Driving a rollover instead of using the jack | The vehicle cannot recover its orientation through throttle alone | Use the jack, then winch from a safe angle |
| Repairing before extraction | Repairs do not free a wedged or overturned vehicle | Restore mobility first; repair once the vehicle can continue |
| Ignoring range selection | High range can make a steep or slippery climb harder to control | Engage low range before the climb and return to high range on easier travel |
| Waiting until every consumable is gone | The next failure can leave no recovery option | Return to a discovered camp while one safe option remains |
Planning inventory in online co-op
Over the Hill supports online co-op for up to four players, according to TechRadar’s 2026 coverage. A group can reduce duplicate equipment by assigning roles before departure: one player carries the portable anchor, another carries the jack, and a third carries planks or a repair kit according to the route. Keep the reusable winch available to every vehicle rather than assuming one player can recover everyone from any position.

Agree on a retreat point and the nearest camp before splitting up. If one vehicle consumes the team’s only anchor or jack, update the plan immediately; the remaining players should not continue into a hazard that requires the missing tool. Co-op saves capacity only when the team shares information about tool uses and reset locations.
Platforms and controller considerations
TechRadar lists the game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, and reports testing both a controller and mouse-and-keyboard controls. A PC-compatible game controller is an optional accessory for players who prefer analog steering and gradual throttle input, which can make low-range climbs and precise plank crossings easier. Check current compatibility and retailer availability for your platform before buying an accessory; those details can change independently of the game.
Current release context
GameTruth lists October 14, 2026 as the Steam launch date. The slot prices, tool behavior and platform information above are presented as 2026 figures from the cited guides and review. No published owner statistic establishes how often players lose inventory items, and no official named statement specifically quantifies inventory loss. The practical approach here is therefore operational: preserve the reusable winch, spend capacity on the next route’s real hazard, and use mechanics and camps before a limited-use mistake becomes a stranded vehicle.
