To connect an iPhone to a TV with HDMI, match the adapter to the iPhone’s charging port, connect the adapter and HDMI cable, then select the correct HDMI input on the TV. The connection usually mirrors the iPhone, but it cannot guarantee that every app will fill a widescreen TV edge to edge.
Choose the right iPhone-to-HDMI adapter
Check the iPhone’s charging port before buying anything. Lightning and USB-C iPhones need different adapters, and USB-C display output is limited to supported models.

Some adapters have a separate port for charging while the iPhone is connected. Check the adapter’s ports and requirements; an HDMI cable may need to be purchased separately.

- Plug the adapter into the iPhone’s Lightning or USB-C port, as appropriate.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an HDMI port on the TV. If your adapter has an HDMI cable built in, connect that cable directly to the TV.
- Turn on the TV and use its input/source control to select the HDMI input number used for the connection.

Why the picture may not fill the TV
HDMI connection and edge-to-edge picture are different things. The external display generally mirrors the iPhone, but an app can instead use a second-screen layout—for example, showing video on the TV while the phone displays controls. What appears on the TV therefore depends partly on the app.
If you see black bars, check the TV’s picture size, aspect ratio, or zoom controls. The exact menu name varies by TV. A zoom-to-fill setting may enlarge the image to cover the screen, but it can crop the edges and remove part of the picture. The Apple guidance cited here does not establish a universal iPhone setting that forces every app and television to fill the screen without cropping.

USB-C iPhone display limits
For the supported USB-C iPhone models listed by Apple, HDMI 2.0-compatible adapters or cables can output up to 4K at 60 Hz. That is a stated capability, not a guarantee that every adapter, cable, TV, or app will deliver that resolution. If the connected TV supports HDR, Apple says its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter can output HDR10 or Dolby Vision content. These USB-C specifications should not be assumed for Lightning iPhones.

No picture
- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the adapter.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the adapter and HDMI cable.
- Check the cable with another HDMI device if possible.
- Remove extension leads or converters from the signal path and connect the adapter directly to the TV, if practical.
Picture but no sound
Make sure the connection uses HDMI through a Digital AV adapter. VGA does not carry audio; an HDMI connection is the appropriate choice when you need sound over the same cable.

HDCP or protected-video warning
Some films, shows, and streaming apps require High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). Apple says a non-HDCP connection can trigger an alert, and some apps may not be compatible with adapter output. Check that the adapter, cable path, and TV support HDCP, and that the app permits playback through an adapter.
