Open the emailed application PDF in a form-capable app, enter your answers, add a signature only if requested, save a completed copy, and check it before sending it back through the channel the sender specified. The exact controls vary by phone, email app, PDF format, and whether the file has interactive fields.
How to open an application attachment from email
- Open the email and tap the application attachment.
- Choose an option to open it in a PDF-capable app. If needed, save the attachment to your phone first.
- Check that the file is a PDF. These steps apply to PDFs; a Word document or another file type may require a different app.
On iPhone, Apple’s instructions describe opening a received document and, if prompted, opening it in Files and tapping Save. Email apps and their menus differ, so the exact labels may not match. See Apple’s iPhone document instructions.

How to fill out the PDF on iPhone
Use Preview
Open the PDF in Preview, tap the form-filling control, tap a field, and type your answer. AutoFill may offer information from your contact details; check each suggested entry before accepting it. Apple’s instructions for filling and signing PDF forms in Preview cover the app’s available controls.
Try Google Drive if you already use it
Open the PDF in Google Drive and tap Fill out form. If that option is not shown, Drive may not support filling that particular PDF. Google’s steps are for iPhone and iPad.

How to fill out the PDF on Android
In Google Drive, open the PDF, tap Edit, then Form filling. Enter your answers and tap Save. To keep the original and make a separate completed copy, choose Save as. If Form filling is missing, Drive may not support that file. See Google’s Android instructions.
What to do if you cannot tap the blanks
The PDF may be a flat document with no interactive fields, or it may use a form technology your app cannot handle. Try a text-box or Fill & Sign tool to place answers over the page, then inspect each page to make sure everything lines up.

Apple’s iPhone tools can add text boxes to documents. Adobe says Acrobat mobile supports AcroForms and Fill & Sign forms, but does not support XFA forms on mobile. Sign only if the application asks you to. Apple’s iPhone document tools let you create or add a signature and move it into position. Adobe’s mobile Fill & Sign workflow supports signatures and initials; Adobe warns that saving them makes them permanent in the saved file by flattening the PDF. Save, inspect, and email the completed application
- Save the filled PDF. If the app offers Save as, use it when you want to preserve the untouched original.
- Reopen the saved copy and check every page for missing answers, misplaced text, and a visible signature if one was requested.
- Use the app’s Share option or attach the saved PDF to a reply to the sender.
- Follow the return method the sender specified, which may not be email. Confirm the completed copy—not the blank original—is attached before sending.
Apple documents sharing completed documents, and Google Drive documents saving and saving as a separate copy; the exact share and email menus depend on the apps installed on your phone.

Start with a suitable app already on your phone. The presence of a form-filling control is a useful compatibility clue; if no app can fill the file, ask the sender for another version rather than guessing at the application’s layout.
