Set the player join password in the active DayZ server configuration: password = "Use-a-long-unique-passphrase";. On a self-hosted PC server, edit the file named by the -config launch parameter (often serverDZ.cfg), save it, and complete your setup’s restart or apply procedure. Managed hosts expose the same setting in a control panel or configuration editor. Console servers are rented and administered through a hosting provider, where a password can restrict access.

What makes a DayZ server private
A DayZ join password requires a player to enter the correct password before the server accepts the connection. It is a shared secret: everyone you intend to admit uses the same value, and anyone who does not know it should be refused at the connection stage.

The setting that controls ordinary player access is named password. In the official DayZ configuration reference, it appears as:
password = ""; // Password to connect to the serverReplace the empty value with a long, unique passphrase. The quotation marks and semicolon are part of the configuration syntax. Do not paste a real password into a public guide, screenshot, stream overlay, log, or support ticket.

A password is useful for a friends-only session, a scheduled community event, or a development server that is not ready for public players. It does not turn the server into a complete identity-based access system. Anyone who receives the shared password can normally pass the same join check until you change it.
The three DayZ credentials you must keep separate

The most common configuration error is changing passwordAdmin while expecting to restrict player joins. That value does not replace the player password. Likewise, placing a BattlEye RConPassword in the DayZ join-password field will not create the access control you want. Treat all three as different secrets with different risks.
Before you edit anything
- Identify your hosting model. The procedure differs between a PC server whose files you control, a managed PC server, and a console server rented through a provider.
- Find the active configuration name. DayZ uses the file specified by the server’s
-configlaunch parameter.serverDZ.cfgis a common filename, but it is not automatically the active file on every installation. - Record your current settings. Make a backup copy before editing so you can restore the previous file if the server fails to start.
- Choose a passphrase you can rotate. Avoid a password used for email, hosting, administration, or any other service.
- Plan an application window. The supplied references do not establish one universal hot-reload behavior. Assume that a restart or the host’s documented apply action is required unless your particular setup explicitly says otherwise.
How to password-protect a self-hosted PC server
1. Locate the file selected by -config
Inspect the command, script, shortcut, service definition, or startup manager that launches your DayZ dedicated server. Look for an argument in this form:
-config=serverDZ.cfgThe exact spacing or path can vary. The important point is the filename or path after -config; that is the configuration DayZ reads. If the launch entry points to a custom filename, edit that file instead of assuming the common name.

2. Open the configuration as plain text
Stop the server if your hosting arrangement requires it, then open the selected configuration in a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Keep the original file as a backup. Configuration files are sensitive to punctuation, so avoid word processors that may replace quotation marks or alter line endings.
3. Set the player join password
Find the existing password entry. If it is empty, change only its value:

password = "Use-a-long-unique-passphrase";Use ordinary quotation marks, retain the semicolon, and do not add a second competing password line elsewhere in the file. If the file already contains a non-empty value, replace it rather than appending another line.
4. Check the administrator setting separately
Leave passwordAdmin as a separate line and assign it only to trusted administrators. A player who knows the join password should not automatically receive the administrator credential. Never combine the two values or send them together in a public chat.

5. Save, apply, and restart according to your setup
Save the file without changing its name or extension. Then use the restart, reload, or apply process documented for your server installation. A running process may continue using its already-loaded settings; do not promise players that changing the file alone updates an active server instantly.
6. Verify both sides of the access check
Attempt a connection with the intended password and confirm that the server accepts it. Then attempt a connection without the password, or with an intentionally incorrect value, and confirm that access is refused. Perform this as a controlled check and do not publish the real credential in screenshots or logs.
Using a managed PC host
Managed DayZ hosts generally expose the same underlying setting through a web control panel. The labels vary, but the workflow normally consists of opening the DayZ service, choosing a configuration-file editor or server-settings page, entering a non-empty player password, saving, and pressing the provider’s restart or apply control.
One provider guide describes adding a join password in its DayZ configuration-file editor. Because panel names and button locations change, follow the current instructions for your account rather than relying on an old screenshot. If the panel offers both “server password” and “admin password,” choose the player-facing server password for this task and keep the administrator value private.

If a panel hides the raw configuration, ask support which field maps to DayZ’s password setting. Do not paste an RCon credential into a generic password box unless the panel explicitly identifies it as BattlEye remote-console configuration. After saving, use the panel’s documented restart or apply action and then perform the two connection tests.

Console players do not normally edit a local DayZ dedicated-server configuration file. Bohemia Interactive’s private-console FAQ explains that players rent and administer private servers through a hosting provider and can control access by setting a password. The provider’s current dashboard is therefore the place to create, change, and apply the join password.
Console hosting availability, regional support, account requirements, interface labels, and pricing can change. Confirm those details in the provider account before making a purchase or promising a particular feature to your group. Once the server is provisioned, look for the access, privacy, or server-password control, save the value, and complete the provider’s restart or activation step.
What a password can—and cannot—do

If one shared secret is sufficient, a join password is the simplest option. If you need to remove one person without changing access for everyone else, investigate a supported whitelist or identity-based access method instead. A password also does not replace moderation, bans, backups, or secure administrator credentials.

Rotate the join password
Change the value on the same active configuration or provider panel, save it, and perform the required apply or restart action. Tell the new password only to the players who should retain access. Anyone with the old value should fail the next join attempt once the new setting is active.

If an administrator or RCon secret was exposed, change that credential in its own configuration area. Do not assume changing the player password also invalidates administrator access; the settings serve different systems.
Keep a distribution list
For a group server, record which channels contain the current join password and remove outdated messages where practical. Avoid posting it in a public community announcement, searchable forum, stream description, or server log.
Troubleshooting: the server still appears public or rejects the password
The password has no effect
- Confirm that you edited the file named by
-config, not a similarly named unused copy. - Check that the line is exactly a non-empty
passwordassignment and retains its quotes and semicolon. - Save the file, then complete the setup’s restart or apply procedure.
- Check the startup or service configuration for a different launch profile that points to another file.
Players receive an invalid-password error
- Have the player retype the current value rather than relying on an old saved entry.
- Check for leading or trailing spaces, changed capitalization, smart quotation marks, or a password copied with an extra character.
- Verify that the server actually restarted after the latest change.
- Confirm that everyone is using the current password after a rotation.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backup to establish whether the edit caused the failure.
- Compare the changed line with the expected syntax: a quoted value followed by a semicolon.
- Remove duplicate or accidentally renamed configuration entries.
- Use the host’s support process if the panel overwrote the file or reports a syntax error.
An administrator can still connect remotely
That may be expected if you changed only the player join password. Review passwordAdmin and the BattlEye RConPassword in their respective configuration areas, and rotate the exposed credential rather than assuming the join-password change covers it.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Choose self-hosting when direct file and launch control matter and you are comfortable maintaining the service. Choose managed hosting when a provider’s panel and operational support are worth the recurring charge. On console, the rental-provider route is the normal administration path.

- Use a passphrase that is unique to this server and long enough that guessing is impractical.
- Do not reuse the join password for
passwordAdmin, RCon, hosting, email, or personal accounts. - Share the join password through a private channel limited to intended players.
- Change it when someone outside the group receives it or when the group membership changes.
- Keep administrator and RCon credentials out of player chat, screenshots, scripts shared with the group, and public repositories.
- Back up configuration files before edits, but protect backups because they contain secrets.
- Review access controls separately: a join password does not provide a per-player allowlist, a ban policy, or protection from compromised administrator credentials.

DayZ’s private join control is the password setting in the active server configuration. On PC, follow the -config parameter to the correct file, set a non-empty value, and restart or apply it. On managed or console servers, use the provider’s configuration panel. Keep the join password, passwordAdmin, and BattlEye RCon credentials separate, because each protects a different function.
