The official A21.2 announcement from The Fun Pimps (2023) defines the values as follows:
| Value | Death-penalty mode | Result after death |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Nothing | No XP penalty or other death penalty from this rule. |
1 |
Classic XP Penalty (default) | Applies the normal XP-only penalty. |
2 |
Injured | Keeps most debuffs and sets food and water to 50% on respawn. |
3 |
Permanent Death | Completely resets the character. |
The current Game Settings reference describes the XP Only option as a 50% penalty of the XP currently required to reach the next level. That amount must be earned again before ordinary level progression resumes. Choosing Nothing removes that death-related XP loss; it does not change XP earned from quests, kills, crafting, or other gameplay.

Identify which configuration system your server uses
There are two materially different configuration paths. Selecting the wrong one is the most common reason an apparently correct change has no effect.
A21.2-style dedicated-server XML
Traditional dedicated servers expose a file named serverconfig.xml. The server reads the copy supplied to its launch command or selected by the host’s control panel. Editing a sample file, an archived backup, or a template that is not passed to the running instance will not alter gameplay.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Newer V3.x configuration
Current V3.x documentation says that many difficulty and game-rule sliders moved out of individual serverconfig.xml properties and into one generated SandboxCode value. On such a server, a manually added DeathPenalty line can be ignored because the server is reading the sandbox configuration instead. Use the current in-game or server-host settings interface to choose the no-penalty death rule and regenerate or apply the sandbox configuration through that interface.
If the host offers both a text editor and a settings form, determine which one is authoritative. A settings form that regenerates configuration can overwrite hand edits the next time it saves.

Change the rule in an A21.2-style XML setup
Perform the following procedure when your dedicated server uses individual XML properties.
- Stop the server or enter its supported maintenance mode. Do not edit a file while the service is actively rewriting configuration unless the host explicitly documents live editing.
- Back up the active configuration. Download or copy the file before making changes. Keep the original filename and a dated copy so you can restore the prior rule if another setting is accidentally changed.
- Locate the active file. Open the
serverconfig.xmlselected by the server’s launch command or by the host’s configuration panel. If several installations or worlds exist, verify that you are working on the instance and world where the affected players connect. - Find the death-penalty property. Search for
DeathPenalty. If it already exists, change only itsvalueattribute to0. Keep the surrounding XML structure intact. - Add the property if it is absent. Place this complete property within the configuration’s other server properties:
<property name="DeathPenalty" value="0" />. Do not remove the quotation marks, slash, or angle brackets. - Save the file as valid XML. Avoid smart quotes, accidental text inserted outside the configuration structure, or a second conflicting
DeathPenaltyentry. If the editor offers an encoding choice, retain the file’s existing format. - Start or reload the server through its normal workflow. A stop/start, restart button, or documented reload applies the file. Closing an editor without restarting the game service does not apply a changed rule.
- Confirm the effective setting. Check the server’s displayed game settings after it starts. If you use a test character, perform a controlled death only in a safe, agreed test session; the purpose is to verify the rule, not to test it on an active shared world without warning players.
Changing the value affects future deaths after the new configuration is loaded. It does not necessarily restore XP that a character already lost under the previous rule; character recovery is a separate administrative matter and is not specified by the setting documentation.
Use the V3.x settings interface when XML is no longer authoritative
When a current V3.x server ignores a correctly formatted XML line, do not keep adding duplicate properties. The documented migration is to the consolidated sandbox configuration.
- Open the server’s current game-rule or world-settings interface. This may be an in-game administrator screen or the host’s server-settings panel, depending on how the instance is managed.
- Locate the Death Penalty control. Select Nothing, rather than XP Only, Injured, or Permanent Death.
- Apply or save the settings. The interface should regenerate or update the
SandboxCodevalue used by the world. - Restart or reload the instance if prompted. Follow the host’s normal sequence so the generated value is actually passed to the server process.
- Reopen the displayed settings after the restart. Confirm that the death rule still shows Nothing. If it reverted, another configuration source is overwriting the generated sandbox settings.
Because the exact labels and controls vary by V3.x release and hosting interface, rely on the current settings screen rather than trying to encode an undocumented numeric SandboxCode value by hand.

Why a server can still apply XP debt after you set 0
You edited a template instead of the active file
Dedicated-server packages often contain more than one XML file: a default example, a template used when creating a world, and the file passed to the live launch command. Only the last one controls the running process. Inspect the launch configuration or host panel to identify the active path, then make the change there.
The host rewrote your edit
A control panel may generate serverconfig.xml or SandboxCode every time you click Save, change a slider, or restart the service. If your line disappears, set the rule in that panel and let it regenerate the configuration. Keep a backup to compare what changed.
The server is using V3.x sandbox rules
On a V3.x installation, an added DeathPenalty property may be ignored because the game reads the consolidated sandbox value. Use the settings interface, apply the Nothing option, and verify the generated configuration after a restart.
The service never reloaded the configuration
Saving a file while the server is running does not guarantee that the process rereads it. Stop and start the service, or use the provider’s documented reload action. Confirm the effective game settings after the process is back online.

More than one death-related rule is being confused
DeathPenalty controls the post-death penalty mode. DropOnDeath controls whether items are dropped. Turning off item drops does not turn off XP loss, and setting the death penalty to Nothing does not automatically alter item-drop behavior.
An XP multiplier was changed instead
XPMultiplier changes how much XP gameplay awards. It does not disable the death penalty. Increasing it may make lost XP faster to regain, but it leaves the death rule itself enabled and does not provide the same result as selecting Nothing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe old penalty was mistaken for a new one
With XP Only enabled, the documented penalty is 50% of the XP currently needed for the next level, and that amount must be recovered before normal progression continues. A player may therefore see an XP deficit even after earning new XP. Check the effective death-rule display rather than inferring the setting from one progress-bar observation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the change without damaging a live world
Use an operational checklist after applying the setting:
Best Value
- Record the server version and whether it uses XML properties or a generated
SandboxCode. - Keep the pre-change configuration backup and note the time of the change.
- Confirm that the active instance, not an unused template or another world, was edited.
- Verify that the server completed a restart or supported reload.
- Read the displayed Death Penalty setting after startup and confirm it says Nothing.
- Tell connected players when the rule changed, especially if the world previously used XP Only, Injured, or Permanent Death.
- If you perform a controlled death, use a test account or an agreed maintenance window rather than risking a player’s established character.
If the displayed setting is Nothing but players report an XP debt from an earlier death, distinguish a configuration change from historical character data. The rule governs how deaths are handled after it is active; the available documentation does not promise automatic restoration of debt created under a previous setting.
How the four death modes differ in practice
Choosing Nothing is one of four distinct policies, not merely an XP toggle. The consequences described in the A21.2 announcement are summarized here so administrators can select the intended rule for their community.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Mode | What players retain or lose | Typical administrative implication |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing | No death penalty from this setting. | Deaths do not impose XP loss, injury effects, food/water reduction, or a character reset through this rule. |
| XP Only | The character receives the classic XP penalty; the Game Settings reference quantifies it as 50% of the XP currently needed for the next level. | Players keep their character but must recover the documented XP amount before normal advancement continues. |
| Injured | Most debuffs remain, and food and water are set to 50% on respawn. | Death creates a survival-status setback rather than the classic XP-only debt. |
| Permanent Death | The character is completely reset. | Use only when a full character wipe is an intentional part of the server’s rules. |
The setting does not determine item drops. Review DropOnDeath separately if the goal is to change what a player loses in the world.
Safe rollback and change management
If players prefer the previous rule, stop the server before restoring the backup or changing the value back to the intended mode. In an XML setup, restore the original DeathPenalty value and restart. In a V3.x setup, select the desired mode in the current settings interface and apply the regenerated sandbox configuration. Announce the change and record which configuration source is authoritative so the same issue does not recur during a later update.
For communities with several administrators, keep a short change record containing the server version, world name, configuration path or settings panel used, selected death mode, and restart time. This prevents a second administrator from editing a different file and assuming that the first change failed.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- You run A21.2-style XML: set
DeathPenaltyto0in the activeserverconfig.xml, save, and restart or reload. - You run V3.x and the XML line is ignored: set Death Penalty to Nothing in the current server or in-game settings interface, apply the generated
SandboxCode, and restart. - You still see XP loss: verify the active configuration source, check that the server actually restarted, and confirm the displayed rule; do not substitute
DropOnDeathorXPMultiplier. - You want to change item loss too: configure
DropOnDeathindependently, because it is a separate rule.
