SCP: Secret Laboratory Remote Admin: Text-Based Console Guide

Open the in-game Text-Based Remote Admin with M, use live help to run commands safely, understand permission codes and locate config_remoteadmin.txt on Windows or Linux.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open SCP: Secret Laboratory’s in-game Remote Admin panel with M, then select the text-console button at the bottom. In that console, help lists commands and help <command> shows the syntax and parameters available on your running server. Your assigned Remote Admin role determines which commands actually execute.

What the Text-Based Remote Admin console is

Text-Based Remote Admin is the command interface built into SCP: Secret Laboratory’s in-game Remote Admin panel. It is not the same window as the host’s server console or a LocalAdmin console. You use it while connected to a server, and every action is checked against the Remote Admin permissions assigned to your role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The text interface is useful when a graphical control is slow, when you need a precise command, or when a server guide gives you a command rather than a sequence of buttons. It also exposes command help directly from the running server, which is important because aliases, parameters and even available commands can change between game releases or through plugins.

How to open the console in game

  1. Join the server on which you are authorized to use Remote Admin. An ordinary player account will not automatically receive administrative access.
  2. Press M to open the Remote Admin panel.
  3. At the bottom of that panel, click the button for the text console.
  4. Click in the command entry area and enter help.
  5. Use help <command>, replacing <command> with a specific command, before attempting an unfamiliar action.

If pressing M does not open an administrative panel, you are either not connected to a server, your key binding differs, or your account has not been granted a Remote Admin role. If the panel opens but the text-console control is absent, confirm that you are looking at the bottom of the Remote Admin panel rather than another administrative or spectator interface.

Discovering commands safely

Start with the live command list

Run help first. The output is generated for the server you are currently using, so it is a better syntax reference than a copied command list from an older release. A command shown in a web guide may have gained an alias, lost a parameter, or been restricted by a plugin since that guide was written.

Inspect one command before running it

Run help <command> for the exact command you plan to use. Check the spelling, required arguments, optional arguments, target format and permission note shown by the server. Do not infer a parameter order from a similar command. The aliases broadcast and bc, for example, may be accepted as equivalents, but the help entry on your server is the authority.

Recognize the console you are actually using

A command entered in the in-game Text-Based Remote Admin box follows Remote Admin’s command rules. A host’s server console can have a different input convention. One hosting reference documents adding a slash when sending Remote Admin commands through that server console. Treat that slash as a rule for that execution context, not as a character to add automatically in the in-game text box.

Command families you can expect

The following groups are documented by the official command table. Names are shown as command names or aliases, not as a promise that every role can execute them. Check each entry with help <command> on the server you administer.

Player moderation

  • kick removes a player from the current server.
  • ban applies a ban using the authority granted to your role.
  • oban provides the offline-ban form where that command is enabled and permitted.
  • unban removes an existing ban when your role has the required authority.

Moderation commands affect real players immediately. Confirm the target and review your server’s moderation policy before executing them. A successful command should produce a clear result in the console; keep that output available for your records instead of repeatedly issuing the same command.

Player control and inspection

  • disarm and release control a player’s disarm state; use the help entry to determine which form your release supports.
  • hp changes or reports health according to the parameters exposed by the running server.
  • forceclass changes a player’s class when the role and current round permit it.
  • playerinventory inspects or manages inventory information where enabled.
  • setgroup assigns a player to a server-defined group when you have the corresponding permission.

These commands can alter the round balance or expose player information. Use the narrowest action needed and avoid testing them on a live round unless your server rules allow administrative intervention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Communication and staff chat

  • broadcast and its bc alias send a broadcast to players.
  • intercomtext and icomtxt send text through the intercom function.
  • icom controls intercom behavior where the command is available.
  • Entering @text uses the administrative chat format documented for Remote Admin.

Broadcast and intercom messages are visible to many players, so check the destination and wording before pressing Enter. The 13.2.0 release notes record changed intercomtext behavior when no argument is supplied; do not assume an empty command has the same effect on every version.

Announcements and CASSIE

  • cassie issues a CASSIE announcement using the syntax supported by your release.
  • cassiewords works with the available CASSIE word set.

Announcement controls can interrupt the intended game audio and may be restricted to roles with announcer permission. Use them for clearly defined operational purposes rather than repeated tests.

Facility controls

  • overcharge controls the overcharge facility event where permitted.
  • roomtp and its rtp alias teleport to a room according to the command’s current parameters.
  • ridlist provides room identifiers used by facility-related commands.

Room identifiers and teleport syntax are easy to misread. Run help ridlist and help roomtp first, then verify the destination before applying a teleport during a live round.

Round, respawn and time controls

  • Round-event commands control available round events.
  • Respawn-event commands control available respawn events.
  • Round-time commands read or change round timing where the role allows it.

These commands can change the state of every player at once. Their exact names, parameters and permission requirements should come from the live help output; do not copy a parameter sequence from a different server version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Server and permission administration

  • config accesses server configuration functions exposed to your role.
  • groups works with configured Remote Admin groups.
  • perm works with permission information or assignment where allowed.
  • refreshcommands refreshes the command set after a configuration or plugin change when supported.

Permission-management commands are especially sensitive. A role that can view a command does not necessarily have authority to change groups or permissions.

Sandbox utilities

  • spawntoy creates a sandbox toy where the server enables the feature and your role permits it.
  • destroytoy removes a sandbox toy where enabled.

Sandbox commands may be disabled entirely. If help spawntoy returns no entry, do not treat that as a syntax error to work around; the feature may not be present on that server.

How Remote Admin permissions work

Remote Admin uses role-based permission codes. A role can display a command in help while still being unable to execute it. The command check happens when you submit the command, not merely when the command list is displayed.

Permission code Scope documented for the code
BN1–BN3 Escalating levels of ban authority
PLM Player management
PRM Permission management
SCC Server-console commands
BRC Broadcasting
ANN Announcer and CASSIE controls
CFG Server configuration
Other documented codes Facility, gameplay, effects or event controls associated with the relevant commands

Why a command says you lack permission

  1. Confirm that you opened the in-game Text-Based Remote Admin console, not a different console.
  2. Run help <command> and read the permission requirement shown for that command.
  3. Compare that requirement with the group assigned to your account.
  4. If the role is wrong, ask the server owner or authorized permission manager to change the assignment. Do not try to bypass the check with an alias or a different input prefix.
  5. If the role is correct but the command still fails, check for a plugin or game update that changed the command or its permission mapping.

Where config_remoteadmin.txt is stored

Remote Admin roles and permissions are configured in config_remoteadmin.txt. The file is stored inside the configuration directory for the server port, and the path is relative to the operating-system account that runs the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Operating system Path
Windows AppDataRoamingSCP Secret Laboratoryconfig<port>config_remoteadmin.txt
Linux .config/SCP Secret Laboratory/config/<port>/config_remoteadmin.txt

Replace <port> with the port directory used by the running server. On Linux, look under the home directory of the account that launches the server; it may not be the account you use for interactive desktop work.

Safe editing procedure

  1. Stop or otherwise quiesce the server according to your hosting procedure before making a permission change.
  2. Back up the existing config_remoteadmin.txt with a dated copy.
  3. Verify that you are editing the directory for the active port, not another server instance.
  4. Make the smallest role or permission change required.
  5. Save the file, start or reload the server as appropriate, and reconnect to Remote Admin.
  6. Use help and a low-impact command to confirm that the intended role is active.

A file edit in the wrong port directory will appear to have no effect. A malformed or overly broad role change can grant more authority than intended, which is why a backup and a post-change check are essential.

Remote Admin versus the server console

Both interfaces can execute administrative operations, but they differ in where they run and how they are authenticated.

Aspect In-game Remote Admin Host or LocalAdmin console
Interface Remote Admin panel with a text-console button at the bottom The host’s server or LocalAdmin console
How you reach it Join the server, press M, then select the text console Open the console through the hosting environment or local server process
Execution context Commands are submitted as the connected Remote Admin user Commands are submitted in the server-console context
Input rules Use the syntax shown by in-game help A hosting reference documents a slash prefix for Remote Admin commands sent through that console
Permission scope Controlled by the connected account’s Remote Admin role codes Controlled by the console context and its own authorization rules
Auditability Keep the visible output readable and avoid flooding it Use the host’s logs and console history according to server policy

When a command works in one interface but fails in the other, compare the execution context before changing the command itself. The same word can be interpreted differently when entered in a server console, a plugin console or the in-game Remote Admin box.

Troubleshooting failed commands

The command is reported as unknown

  • Run help to see whether the command exists on this server.
  • Check spelling and use the exact alias shown by help.
  • Confirm that a plugin or recent update has not removed or renamed it.
  • Make sure you are not typing a server-console-only command into the in-game box, or vice versa.

The syntax is rejected

  • Run help <command> and copy the current argument order.
  • Check whether an argument is required even when an older guide treated it as optional.
  • Verify target identifiers, room identifiers and quotation or spacing rules shown by the live help entry.
  • Try the documented alias only after confirming that the alias is listed for your release.

You receive a permission error

  • Read the command’s required permission code.
  • Check the group assigned to your account in the server’s Remote Admin configuration.
  • Ask an authorized permission manager to correct the role rather than attempting workarounds.
  • Reconnect or refresh commands after a role change if your hosting setup requires it.

The command appears to do nothing

  • Read the console response for a target, state or parameter error.
  • Check whether the command is limited to a particular round phase or facility state.
  • Confirm that you used the correct port-specific configuration and server instance.
  • Check the current release notes and plugin documentation for behavior changes.

Output is difficult to read

Do not solve a noisy console by repeatedly running the same command. Official community-server guidelines say not to flood, clear or obstruct the game console or Text-Based Remote Admin. Stop command loops, let the output settle, and record the relevant response in your normal moderation or incident log.

Version changes to watch

Remote Admin is not a frozen command language. Official version 13.2.0 notes record an elevator teleport command and a change to intercomtext when no argument is supplied. The notes demonstrate why a command list copied from another release can be misleading even when the command name looks familiar.

Use this order when documentation disagrees:

  1. Read the live server output from help.
  2. Inspect help <command> for the exact command in question.
  3. Check the release notes for the version running on the server.
  4. Check plugin documentation or administrator notes if the server is modified.

If a command is safety-critical or affects many players, test it in a controlled environment before using it during a public round.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical administration workflows

Moderating a player

  1. Confirm the player identity and the rule or incident that requires action.
  2. Use help kick, help ban or help oban to verify the current target and reason syntax.
  3. Check that your role carries the required ban or player-management code.
  4. Execute the narrowest appropriate command once.
  5. Save the resulting console output with the time, target and reason in the server’s normal record.

Sending an operational announcement

  1. Decide whether a broadcast, intercom message, CASSIE announcement or staff chat is appropriate.
  2. Run the relevant help entry, such as help broadcast or help intercomtext.
  3. Confirm that your role includes BRC or ANN as applicable.
  4. Review the message for audience, urgency and spelling.
  5. Send it once and avoid repeating it merely to test delivery.

Finding a room before teleporting

  1. Run help ridlist to learn the room-identifier format.
  2. Identify the destination and verify it with your staff team.
  3. Run help roomtp or help rtp for the current teleport syntax.
  4. Confirm your facility-control permission.
  5. Execute the teleport and check the response before issuing another command.

Changing a Remote Admin role

  1. Back up config_remoteadmin.txt.
  2. Confirm the active server port and the account that runs the server.
  3. Review the requested role against the minimum permissions needed.
  4. Edit the correct port-specific file.
  5. Reload or restart using your hosting procedure.
  6. Reconnect and verify access with live help output.

Keeping the console usable and accountable

Text-Based Remote Admin is an operational tool, not a chat stream. Long command loops, repeated announcements and attempts to clear inconvenient output make it harder for another administrator to understand what happened. Keep the console readable, issue each action deliberately and preserve the response for your server’s records.

Use role separation where possible. Staff who only need broadcasts should not receive permission-management or ban authority, and a person who manages roles should understand the consequences of granting SCC, PRM, CFG or high-level BN permissions. The exact role design belongs to each server, but the principle is constant: grant only the codes required for the job.

Quick checklist

  • Press M and select the text-console button at the bottom of Remote Admin.
  • Run help, then help <command> before using unfamiliar syntax.
  • Distinguish the in-game console from the host or LocalAdmin console.
  • Check the permission code for every sensitive command.
  • Find roles in the port-specific config_remoteadmin.txt file.
  • Back up the file before editing and verify the active port directory.
  • Check release notes and plugin changes when behavior differs.
  • Do not flood, clear or obstruct the console or Text-Based Remote Admin.
