Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled where available, and use Battery Saver only when you need it. Exact settings vary by phone and Android version.
1. Find what is using the battery
Open Settings → Battery and review the usage breakdown; names and layout differ by manufacturer. Look for an app using an unexpectedly large share of power, especially when you have not been using it. Google recommends restricting apps with high battery use, but avoid applying restrictions to every app: background limits can affect alerts and other functions. Restrict an app only when its background activity is unnecessary, then check whether important notifications still arrive. 2. Reduce battery use from the screen
Shorten screen timeout
Set the screen to turn off sooner when idle. Search Settings for Screen timeout or Sleep if the display menu differs on your phone. A shorter timeout reduces time spent illuminating a screen you are not using.
Choose a comfortable brightness
Lower brightness to a level you can comfortably read, or enable automatic/adaptive brightness if that suits how you use the phone. Google lists both reducing brightness and letting it adjust automatically as ways to reduce battery use. There is no universal brightness level that fits every environment.

Try dark theme if you prefer it
Dark theme can reduce battery use on some screens, but it is not a guaranteed major saving: the result depends on the phone’s display and whether an app supports dark appearance. Use it if you like the look, rather than treating it as a necessary battery setting. Google’s dark theme guidance describes its limitations.
3. Keep useful app optimization enabled
On supported phones, Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization can reduce background activity for apps you use less often. Google says these settings are enabled by default on Pixel phones. Leave them on unless a specific app is not behaving as needed; optimization can delay notifications or affect performance. If an important alert arrives late, review that app’s battery settings and notification behavior rather than disabling optimization system-wide. 4. Adjust the activity that is draining power
Some battery use is the cost of what the phone is doing, not a setting that should be switched off permanently. Google identifies extended navigation, GPS use, hotspot use, video streaming, camera use, graphics-heavy games, long periods in apps, and calls while moving as demanding situations.

- Navigation or GPS: End navigation when you reach your destination; avoid leaving an active route running unnecessarily.
- Hotspot: Turn it off when connected devices no longer need it.
- Video, gaming, or camera use: Shorten long sessions when a charge matters more than continuing the activity.
- Calls while moving: Expect heavier use in this situation; avoid disabling mobile connectivity if you still need to stay reachable.
These are targeted adjustments, not a reason to switch off location, Bluetooth, or mobile connectivity across the board. Turning off location, in particular, can prevent apps and features that rely on it from working. Google’s Android Help lists battery-intensive activities and notes that available steps depend on the device.
5. Keep the phone from getting hot
A hot phone can drain faster even when it is not being used, and heat can damage the battery. Avoid leaving the device in hot conditions or continuing a demanding activity if it is becoming unusually warm. Google also advises avoiding heat when the phone is fully charged. If the phone stays hot during ordinary use, check for an app consuming unusual power and consult the phone maker’s guidance.

Battery Saver is useful when preserving the remaining charge matters more than prompt background activity. Google says it can limit or turn off background activity and may delay visual effects, features, network connections, or apps. Turn it on when you accept those trade-offs; if an app or alert is time-sensitive, check how it behaves while Battery Saver is active. The exact switch and available options vary by phone.

7. If battery life remains poor
After an update
Google says Pixel phones may use more battery than usual for a few days after a software update while they download and optimize software. This guidance is Pixel-specific, not a promise about every Android device.
Try basic troubleshooting
- Restart the phone.
- Check for Android system updates and app updates.
- If the drain continues, contact the phone manufacturer for model-specific help.
Google also lists a factory reset as a possible troubleshooting step, but it removes data and uninstalls apps. Do not try it casually: back up what you need and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding.
Charging and battery-care notes
Google advises using the power adapter supplied with the phone; another adapter may charge slowly, fail to charge, or damage the phone or battery. For charger compatibility, follow the phone manufacturer’s guidance. You do not need to “teach” the phone its battery capacity by repeatedly draining it from full to zero or charging it from zero to full. Google’s Android Help separately advises occasionally letting the charge fall below 10% and then charging fully overnight as battery-care guidance; that is not a demonstrated method for extending the current charge.
Settings, menu labels, and available features vary by manufacturer, model, and Android version; Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 13 and later. If a path in this article does not match your phone, search Settings for Battery or consult the manufacturer’s current support page. Google’s general Android guidance also directs users to their device maker for device-specific instructions.
