Ring says its devices need at least 1 Mbps to work, but the recommended upload speed depends on video resolution: from 1 Mbps per device at 720p to 15 Mbps at 4K. Check the exact doorbell model’s requirements, then measure speed and Wi-Fi signal where it is installed; an internet plan can be fast while the signal at the door is weak.
How many Mbps does a Ring doorbell need?
Ring’s general resolution-based guidance lists these recommended upload speeds per device. Ring says a device adjusts video quality to match internet speed, but needs at least 1 Mbps to work. The page does not state a publication year.
| Video resolution | Recommended upload speed per device |
|---|---|
| 720p | 1 Mbps |
| 1080p | 2 Mbps |
| 1536p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 2K | 10 Mbps |
| 4K | 15 Mbps |
These are general recommendations, not a substitute for the specifications of a particular model. For instance, Ring lists 2 Mbps upload and download for optimal performance for the 1080p Video Doorbell 4. The Wired Doorbell 2K specification lists a 10 Mbps minimum upload speed for optimal performance.
Does a Ring doorbell need upload or download speed?
Check upload speed first: the doorbell sends video over the internet, and Ring describes upload as the speed at which the device sends data such as encrypted video. Some model specifications also set a download requirement, so check the exact product page rather than assuming that upload alone is sufficient.

- Capture it all with Retinal 2K video — From wide views to tighter focus, it’s easy to see your home or business in crisp clarity with Retinal 2K.
- Zoom in up to 6x — Catch details at a distance, inspect faces, and more with up to 6x Enhanced Zoom.
- Connect to who’s there — See, hear, and speak in real time with Live View and Two-Way Talk.
- Get real-time alerts — Receive real-time notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
- Easily recharge — Simply insert the included removal tool to detach your doorbell from the wall, then recharge the built-in battery via USB-C. (Cable not included.)
Allow for other devices using the connection. Ring advises adding the requirements for each Ring device; cameras and other household devices uploading data can also reduce the capacity available to the doorbell.
How to check whether the problem is internet speed or Wi-Fi coverage
- Find the exact doorbell model in the Ring app or on its product page. Use that model’s stated requirement; if you are unsure, Ring suggests checking the original box or product page.
- Connect a phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the doorbell and turn off any VPN. Run a speed test near the router, recording both upload and download results.
- Run the test again at the doorbell’s installed location and compare the results. If speed falls substantially near the door, local Wi-Fi coverage is a likely issue. If results are poor in both places, investigate the internet connection or competing upload activity.
- In the Ring app, open the doorbell’s Device Health page to check signal strength and, on supported products, the internet upload-speed result.
Ring’s Wi-Fi guidance classifies RSSI signal readings as great from 0 to -60, okay from -60 to -70, poor from -70 to -80, and very poor at -80 or worse. Weaker readings can be associated with delays, interruptions, or intermittent service. Ring’s upload-speed diagnostic, where available, labels more than 10 Mbps good, 5–10 Mbps okay, and less than 5 Mbps poor. These diagnostic labels are not universal minimums; follow the particular model’s requirement.

What to do when the speed or signal is poor
Poor results near the router
Check whether other devices or services are using upload bandwidth and whether your internet connection is delivering the speed you expect. Ring recommends contacting your provider if its upload-speed result is poor. You can also reboot the modem and router; Ring advises waiting five minutes before rebooting affected Ring devices.
Good speed near the router, weak signal at the door
Improve the Wi-Fi path between the router and the doorbell. Ring suggests moving the router or device closer and names Chime Pro or an eero mesh router as possible coverage options. An extender or mesh system can improve the in-home wireless signal, but it does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan.

How to compare two Ring doorbell setups
Compare the same four factors rather than looking only at the headline speed of an internet plan:
- The exact doorbell model and its video resolution.
- Measured upload speed at the router and at the doorbell location.
- The combined needs of other Ring devices and household upload activity.
- The doorbell’s Wi-Fi signal strength.
A plan with more upload capacity and a mesh system solve different problems: the plan affects internet bandwidth, while mesh or an extender can improve Wi-Fi coverage inside the home.
