But adding robots or AI does not, on its own, make a workplace safe. The larger breakthrough depends on how risks are assessed, how systems are introduced and monitored, and whether workers can understand and influence decisions that affect them.
How automation can reduce workplace risk
Robots and other automated systems can perform high-risk repetitive work or operate where exposure to hazards would otherwise fall on people. The International Labour Organization’s 2025 global report says automation and smart monitoring can reduce hazardous exposure and help prevent injuries. That is a meaningful safety benefit, but it is a potential that depends on the task and the way a system is deployed—not a guarantee that automation will make a particular workplace safer. The ILO report frames digitalization as an opportunity that calls for proactive prevention and risk assessment.

Automation here includes both physical robotics and automated or semi-automated decisions. AI worker-management systems, for example, can collect real-time information about worker behavior and use it to inform management decisions. Those systems change how work is organized even when no robot is physically present.

What can go wrong when a system is added?
A technology may reduce one hazard while introducing another. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) notes that robots working alongside people can create interaction risks, including unexpected collisions; workers may also become over-reliant on automated systems. Changes to work organization can bring psychosocial and organizational concerns as well. EU-OSHA’s digitalisation overview emphasizes that outcomes depend on how technologies are applied, managed and regulated.

- SMART 2.5K QHD RESOLUTION — CAPTURE EVERY DETAIL — Record in crystal-clear 2560×1440 video with a 120° wide field of view. This smart camera captures license plates, package labels, and faces with clarity that standard 1080P cameras miss. Ideal for homeowners monitoring driveways, porches, and entryways where detail matters most.
- ENHANCED COLOR NIGHT VISION — SEE CLEARLY IN TOTAL DARKNESS — Industry-leading Starlight Sensor paired with a 72-lumen spotlight delivers vivid, full-color footage even in pitch black. Whether watching your backyard at midnight or checking the garage after hours, this smart indoor/outdoor camera delivers color clarity that (infrared) IR-only cameras cannot match,
- IP65 WEATHERPROOF — BUILT FOR EVERY SEASON — Rated IP65 for dust-tight, water-jet-resistant protection against rain, snow, heat, and humidity. Operates from -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C). Mount on your front porch, garage, backyard fence, or driveway post — one camera built for year-round outdoor security.
- MOTION-ACTIVATED SPOTLIGHT WITH DETERRENT SIREN — When motion is detected, the 72-lumen spotlight floods the area and the 100 dB siren sounds to deter intruders and package thieves on contact. Trigger both remotely from the Wyze app or set automated rules. Built-in active deterrence for homeowners and renters who want home security that fights back.
- AI-POWERED SMART ALERTS — On-device AI distinguishes people, packages, pets, and vehicles[XC1.1] so you receive only the notifications that matter. Ignore false alarms from passing cars or swaying branches. Perfect for pet monitoring when you’re away and package detection during delivery season.
Monitoring tools also need scrutiny. EU-OSHA identifies categories such as smartphone apps, wearables, mobile cameras, drones, smart glasses and smart personal protective equipment. Depending on the system, these may track fatigue, stress, alertness, heart rate, posture, movement or presence in dangerous areas. Their presence is not proof that a workplace is safer: questions remain about whether a system is effective, how its data is owned and used, and whether collection respects workers’ privacy.
Why prevention has to include system design and evaluation
In a September 2024 overview, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) treats AI adoption as a risk-management challenge. Its approaches include prevention through design, collaborative evaluations by developers and deployers, independent audits, certification and safety-case methods—documented arguments and evidence that a system is acceptably safe for its intended use. NIOSH also stresses that workers are part of a broader sociotechnical system: safety depends on the interaction of people, technology and the organization around them. NIOSH’s overview notes that general guidelines may not give sufficiently detailed methods for particular workplace uses.

That makes evaluation more than a check that a device operates as designed. A useful assessment asks what hazard the technology is intended to reduce, what new risks it may create, how it changes day-to-day work, and who is responsible for responding when it fails or produces a harmful outcome. The assessment should be tied to the system’s intended use and the actual workplace where it will operate.

Workers often encounter practical risks that are difficult to see from a system specification alone: a robot’s path may conflict with a routine task, a monitoring measure may not reflect the conditions on the floor, or an automated decision may be based on incomplete information. Informing and consulting workers can help surface these issues during assessment and implementation. The ILO calls for worker participation and preventive strategies; EU-OSHA likewise identifies transparent implementation and consultation as relevant to managing occupational safety and health risks.

Participation is not a substitute for technical evaluation, and the available sources do not establish that it is the single most effective way to reduce injuries. It is one part of accountable deployment. EU-OSHA also warns that worker representatives can face obstacles, including opaque systems and unequal power. Consultation is therefore more useful when people can access enough information to understand the system and raise concerns without the process becoming merely formal. EU-OSHA’s report on worker participation and representation discusses these issues in AI worker-management systems.

- What hazard is the system meant to reduce? Identify the exposure or task it addresses, and whether it removes people from danger or only changes how the hazard is managed.
- What new risks might it introduce? Consider human-machine interaction, overreliance, changed work practices and organizational effects—not only technical failure.
- What worker data is collected? Ask who owns and can access it, how it is used, and whether collection is necessary for the stated safety purpose.
- Can workers challenge errors or raise concerns? Workers should be able to understand relevant decisions and communicate problems with the system or its effects.
- Who evaluates and documents safety? Establish who is accountable for assessing the system in its intended workplace use and for addressing problems after deployment.
The evidence here spans different scopes: the ILO report is global, NIOSH is a U.S. occupational safety and health institute, and EU-OSHA presents European agency findings. These sources support treating AI at work as a prevention and governance issue; they do not provide a comparative estimate showing that one intervention produces the largest reduction in injuries.
