A maker has shown how to turn the Touch ID hardware from an Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID into a separate external button. The project may appeal if you want to keep using a different keyboard or use a MacBook closed with external displays. It repurposes Apple keyboard electronics; it does not make a generic fingerprint reader work as native Touch ID.
What the DIY Touch ID project does
The build starts with the Touch ID unit inside a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. A maker’s video describes removing that hardware from a broken or unused keyboard and adapting it as a standalone button. A separate open-source project documents a 3D-printed enclosure using an A2449 Magic Keyboard as donor hardware. These are project descriptions, not independent verification that every build or keyboard revision will work.

The key distinction is that the project reuses the keyboard’s Touch ID electronics. It is not a generic USB fingerprint-reader conversion, and Apple’s compatibility documentation does not promise support for arbitrary DIY sensor variants.

Apple says Magic Keyboard with Touch ID can be used with any Mac with Apple silicon after it is securely paired with the Mac. That documented route is a complete Apple keyboard, not a standalone sensor. Apple also says one such keyboard can be securely paired with one Mac at a time, while a Mac can maintain secure pairings with up to five keyboards. Apple Platform Security explains the pairing model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In Apple’s design, the keyboard supplies the biometric sensor, but it neither stores fingerprint templates nor matches fingerprints. The Mac’s Secure Enclave handles enrollment, matching and security policy. Apple describes secure pairing between the Secure Enclave and the keyboard’s hardware PKA block, as well as encrypted communication after pairing. Reusing the keyboard’s electronics is therefore materially different from attaching an ordinary fingerprint reader.
Why an external sensor can help
In a clamshell setup, a MacBook’s built-in Touch ID sensor may be inaccessible because the laptop is closed. Apple’s developer documentation identifies an external Touch ID keyboard as an option for using Touch ID in that configuration. Apple’s LocalAuthentication documentation discusses biometric access in this context.

The DIY button aims at that convenience while letting you retain a different keyboard. Whether a particular modified unit works is a separate question: the available project documentation identifies A2449 as donor hardware, but does not establish a complete compatibility matrix across donor revisions, macOS releases and build outcomes.

| Consideration | DIY donor-hardware route | Complete Magic Keyboard with Touch ID |
|---|---|---|
| What you use | Touch ID hardware salvaged from a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID | The complete Magic Keyboard with Touch ID |
| Donor or product condition | Requires a suitable donor keyboard; the project describes an A2449 donor, without establishing every revision’s compatibility | Uses Apple’s supported keyboard product |
| Fabrication and teardown | Requires disassembly and an enclosure; the project describes 3D-printed parts | No sensor teardown or enclosure fabrication |
| Keeping another keyboard | Designed to separate the sensor from the donor keyboard | Requires using the complete keyboard as the external keyboard |
| Compatibility basis | Project-specific outcome; not a general Apple support statement for modified hardware | Apple documents use with any Mac with Apple silicon after secure pairing |
| Physical risks | Disassembly and battery hazards are identified by the project creator | Avoids the DIY teardown risks |
| Price comparison | Not stated in the reviewed project descriptions | Not stated in Apple’s cited support documentation |
What a build involves—and the risks
The project materials describe a donor Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, enclosure files or fabrication, and repair supplies such as a precision screwdriver, hot-air tool and spudger. These are examples from the project descriptions, not a universal bill of materials; consult the specific build instructions for its requirements.

The creator warns about damage, electric shock, fire, injury, lithium-ion battery damage, electrostatic discharge and handling powered electronics. This is a teardown and modification, not a risk-free accessory installation. A damaged or unsuitable donor, or a mistake during disassembly, can make the keyboard unusable or create a physical hazard. Do not work on powered electronics, and do not proceed if you are not equipped to handle the battery and repair risks identified in the build materials.
