To reduce bird-window collisions, make risky glass visible from the outside with a dense pattern, screen, or other barrier. A few decorative stickers usually leave dangerous gaps: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service home-toolkit guidance recommends exterior markers no more than two inches apart vertically and horizontally. Then reduce nighttime light visible through windows and place feeders directly on a window or within three feet.
How do I stop birds from flying into my windows?
Start by identifying the glass most likely to cause a collision. Birds may see reflected trees, plants, or sky as habitat, or mistake transparent-looking glass for an open route. Landscaping and indoor lighting can also contribute. Look for repeat strikes, feather marks, and windows that reflect vegetation or sky; prioritize those windows if treating every pane at once is impractical. BirdSafe recommends assessing risk and focusing on high-risk windows.

Make the glass conspicuous on its exterior surface. The aim is a continuous, visible barrier—not merely a symbol that might resemble a predator. USFWS estimates that more than one billion bird-glass collisions occur annually in the United States; the retrieved agency page does not state the estimate’s publication year or identify the underlying study year.
Do bird decals on windows work?
Decals and marker tape can help when they cover the risky glass in a close, consistent pattern. A single decal or a few widely spaced shapes leave open-looking routes between them. USFWS home-toolkit guidance calls for exterior markers or barriers no more than two inches apart both vertically and horizontally, creating a two-by-two-inch grid.

Apply the pattern across the area where birds might approach, not just at eye level or near the center. Check the specific product’s instructions for application surface, coverage, and durability; the available guidance does not establish a universally effective product or guarantee that collisions will stop.
Should window decals go inside or outside?
Outside is preferable when it is safe and practical to reach the glass. Exterior patterns are more effective at preventing collisions than patterns applied indoors, according to USFWS, because they make the glass barrier visible before a bird reaches it. An inside decal may be easier to install, but do not assume it provides the same protection.

How far apart should bird window stickers be?
For exterior markers, follow the USFWS home-toolkit spacing: no more than two inches apart horizontally and vertically. This close grid avoids leaving broad gaps that can look like a flight path. The guidance is about pattern spacing, not a guarantee for every species, window, or installation.

Which window treatments can make glass visible to birds?
Choose a treatment that covers the risky glass and suits the window, access, and your need to retain a view. The guidance below compares broad treatment types, not tested brands or like-for-like products.
| Treatment | Placement and coverage | View and practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Decals, tape, or markers | Use on the exterior in a close pattern; USFWS recommends gaps no greater than two inches vertically and horizontally. | Easy to understand and often removable, but coverage and durability depend on the product and installation. Sparse silhouettes are not a substitute for a full pattern. |
| Patterned film | Exterior film can add a pattern over the relevant glass; follow the product’s placement directions. | Some products preserve a view from indoors. Confirm the pattern covers the risk area and is suitable for the glass. |
| External insect screen | Install outside the glass to reduce reflections and create a visible barrier. | May also serve its ordinary insect-screen purpose; fit and access depend on the window. |
| Netting | Use taut netting with openings no larger than one-half inch, set far enough in front of the window that a bird contacting it cannot continue into the glass. | Installation needs secure tension and adequate clearance. Loose or slack netting can create an entanglement risk. |
| Paracord curtain | USFWS describes vertical cords spaced less than four inches apart; Audubon also recommends exterior hanging cords as a physical barrier. | A visible barrier that can be installed outside, but it requires appropriate mounting and coverage. |
| Temporary paint or soap markings | Apply a dense exterior pattern; USFWS lists washable tempera paint and temporary markings as options. | Check compatibility with the glass and local conditions, and expect to maintain or renew temporary markings. |
| Patterned, etched, frosted, or fritted glass | Consider for replacement glazing or new construction. | Choices depend on the building and glazing specifications; consult a qualified glazing professional. |

Do hawk stickers keep birds away?
A few hawk silhouettes are not a reliable collision-prevention method. USFWS describes them as mostly ineffective unless used at high density. A close pattern that makes the glass itself visible is a better-supported approach than relying on a small number of predator shapes.

Where should I put a bird feeder to prevent window collisions?
Audubon advises putting a feeder directly on the window or within three feet of it. At that distance, a startled bird has less room to build speed before reaching the glass. A feeder farther away can give a bird more room to accelerate toward a window; placement alone should not replace treating risky glass.

What else around the house can reduce collision risk?
- Reduce nighttime light: Turn off unnecessary indoor lights visible outside, especially when they illuminate windows at night.
- Use curtains or blinds: Close them when useful to reduce the appearance of an open route or visible indoor habitat.
- Move indoor plants: Keep plants from appearing directly behind risky windows, where they may contribute to the impression of habitat beyond the glass.
- Maintain treatments: Check that patterns remain visible and screens or barriers stay in place. Replace or repair coverage that has peeled, shifted, or developed gaps.
