What to check first
- Open Your Orders and select the order. Check its status, estimated delivery date, tracking updates, and any order-specific options.
- Determine whether Amazon or a third-party seller shipped the item. The order details identify the seller; for a seller-fulfilled order, the seller is also the relevant contact for delivery issues.
- Keep the tracking details and any messages about the order. If the item arrived damaged, take clear photos that show the damage before returning it.
Amazon lists weather, traffic, high holiday demand, customs delays, and operational issues as possible causes of late deliveries. These are general examples, not a diagnosis of a particular shipment.

If your Amazon order is late
Check tracking and allow the stated 48-hour period
Use the tracking link in Your Orders and check your email for carrier notices. For Amazon-delivered orders, the tracker may show real-time information, and Amazon says it emails customers when it knows of a delay; messages can also appear in Message Center. If another carrier is delivering the parcel, check that carrier’s website, app, or email as well, since it may have the newest update.

Amazon says most late parcels arrive within 48 hours of the estimated delivery date. Its guidance is to allow that period for an unexpected delay. This is Amazon’s help-page guidance, not an independently measured delivery statistic.
Choose the contact route based on who shipped the order
- Shipped by Amazon: If there is still no delivery update after 48 hours, contact Amazon Customer Service. Amazon says to do so within 30 days of the estimated delivery date.
- Shipped and sold by a third-party seller: Contact the seller through the order page. Keep the conversation in Amazon’s messaging system so the relevant correspondence is available if you need to seek further help.
- Carrier has the parcel: Check the carrier’s tracking page for the latest scan, then use the Amazon or seller route above if the package remains unresolved.
If a guaranteed delivery date was missed
For an eligible guaranteed delivery that arrived late, open Your Orders, select the order, then choose Problem with an order → Shipping or delivery issues → Shipment is late. Amazon says eligible orders may receive a refund of the shipping fees. This is a shipping-fee refund, not a refund of the item’s purchase price.

If the order is marked undeliverable
Amazon says an undeliverable package is returned, and an automatic refund is issued when Amazon receives it. Check the order page for the status and refund information; this return-and-refund trigger applies to an undeliverable package and should not be assumed to describe every cancellation.

It has not shipped yet
Open the order in Your Orders and use the cancellation option shown there, if one is available. The buyer-facing help information reviewed here does not establish a universal pre-shipment cancellation deadline or a single cancellation flow, so rely on the controls displayed for your specific order rather than an assumed time window.

It has already shipped
Amazon’s tracking help says a shipped order cannot be canceled. Check Your Orders for the current options; depending on the order’s status and applicable policy, you may need to use the return or refund process instead.
If an item arrived damaged
- Go to Your Orders and select Return or replace items beside the affected item.
- Select the item and a return reason, then follow the instructions shown for that order. Amazon may ask for clear photos of the damage.
- Review the available options and the return-by date before submitting. Replacement availability depends on the item and stock, and the displayed delivery date can vary.
- Return the original item by the stated deadline to avoid being charged for the replacement. In some cases, Amazon sends the replacement only after receiving the original.
Not every item can be replaced, and the return, refund, and shipping options can vary by product. If a replacement is unavailable—or the item was a gift—Amazon says you may need to return it and place a new order. Hazardous defective products have a separate online returns process, so follow the instructions shown for that item.

When a third-party order may qualify for A-to-z Guarantee review
For an order sold and fulfilled by a third-party seller, Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee covers eligible issues involving timely delivery and item condition. It is not an automatic refund for every problem: Amazon reviews the claim against the transaction, issue, timing, and required steps. The order’s last possible delivery date must fall within the stated 90-day window.
- Non-delivery: Amazon’s eligibility guidance says three days must pass after the latest estimated delivery date, or tracking must show delivery confirmation—whichever happens sooner. You must also have contacted the seller more than 48 hours earlier without resolution.
- Damaged, defective, or not as described: You must have requested a return more than 48 hours earlier without receiving return authorization.
- Other return or refund problems: Amazon lists additional situations, such as an unauthorized or closed return request, or a return made under policy for which the expected refund has not arrived within the specified interval. Eligibility and exclusions depend on the case.
Contact the seller first and follow the instructions on Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee page before requesting review. The Guarantee does not apply to every type of Amazon transaction.

What to expect when returning a third-party seller order
If the seller fulfills and ships its own inventory, Amazon says the return goes to that seller. The seller generally processes a refund after receiving the return, usually within two business days. Transit delays, untrackable return shipping, receiving a different item, or receiving a new item that shows use or damage can delay the refund.
