Meta has described a UPI Lite feature for AI glasses in India that scans a merchant’s QR code when you look at it and say, “Hey Meta, scan and pay.” The announcement says payments would be processed through a WhatsApp-linked bank account and describes amounts below ₹1,000. Meta calls the feature testing/upcoming, so it is not safe to assume it is available for every pair of glasses, bank, account or app setup.
What Meta says the glasses payment flow does
In an announcement dated October 14, 2025, and updated May 4, 2026, Meta described testing UPI Lite QR payments on AI glasses in India. Its stated flow is to look at a QR code and say, “Hey Meta, scan and pay”; Meta says the payment is processed through a WhatsApp-linked bank account and describes the amount scope as below ₹1,000. What you need before trying it
- A supported AI-glasses model with the QR-scanning payment feature enabled for your account. Ray-Ban India describes Meta AI QR scanning and a camera on its Ray-Ban Meta product page, but that capability alone does not establish that UPI payments work on every model or account.
- A smartphone connection and the companion app. Ray-Ban’s product FAQ says the glasses require both; the announcement does not establish that you can make this payment with no phone setup or connection.
- A WhatsApp-linked bank account and any other setup the official payment flow requests. The announcement does not spell out every setup screen or authentication step.
- A merchant’s legitimate UPI payment QR code. Use the feature for a payment you intend to make, not to act on an unexpected QR code or link.
How to pay with smart glasses
- Check feature access. Confirm that UPI QR payments are enabled for your glasses, Meta/WhatsApp setup, bank and account. Do not treat the announcement as a guarantee of general availability.
- Use the merchant’s payment QR. Look at the QR code presented by the merchant for your purchase. Ignore unsolicited QR codes or links claiming you must scan them to receive a refund, cashback or other funds.
- Invoke the announced command. If the feature is enabled, look at the QR code and say, “Hey Meta, scan and pay.” Meta’s public description gives this voice command; the exact screens and prompts may depend on the enabled payment experience.
- Check recipient and amount before authorizing. Make sure the payee is the intended merchant and the amount matches the bill. Stop if either detail is missing, unexpected or difficult to verify. NPCI’s QR-payment guidance says to review the payment details before entering a PIN and authorizing. See NPCI’s QR-payment instructions.
- Complete only the official authentication prompt. Follow the authentication step shown by the official feature. Do not dictate a UPI PIN aloud, disclose it to another person, or enter it to receive money. Meta has not publicly specified all authentication screens or security controls for this announced feature.
- Verify the result. Check the payment app or account for a success status and keep the transaction reference. If the payment is wrong or fails, use the app or bank’s complaint route.
UPI safety rules that matter especially with a camera and voice command
A QR code is for paying, not receiving
NPCI warns that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not receiving them.” A person asking you to scan a code and enter your PIN to collect money is a fraud warning sign. Be cautious with unsolicited links, QR codes and requests that pressure you to act quickly. Read NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance.

Never share your UPI PIN
NPCI says a UPI PIN authorizes bank transactions and should not be shared. Enter it only in the official payment flow when you are making a payment and have checked its details. If someone asks you to reveal or speak your PIN, stop.
Review before confirming
NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. That makes checking the payee and amount before final authorization essential. If a transaction goes wrong, report it through the UPI app or your bank rather than assuming it can be cancelled after initiation. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ.

Smart-glasses QR payments are not NFC Tap & Pay
The Meta announcement describes camera-based QR recognition on glasses. NPCI’s UPI Lite Tap & Pay documentation describes a different method: a compatible mobile device and UPI app use NFC to capture a payee ID from a smart tag or QR. NPCI says that Tap & Pay path can use UPI Lite for amounts up to ₹500 when enabled; that is not a glasses payment limit or proof that glasses support NFC Tap & Pay. Read NPCI’s Tap & Pay overview.
