Best HDR, Refresh-Rate, and Color Settings for a 4K OLED Gaming Monitor

There is no universal set of picture values for every 4K OLED gaming monitor. Start by selecting the highest resolution and refresh rate supported by your monitor, graphics source, and connection together; enable compatible variable refresh rate (VRR); and use the monitor’s HDR mode with the game or platform’s calibration patterns for HDR play. For everyday SDR gaming, begin with a neutral preset rather than copying another monitor’s color or brightness numbers.

Set up the signal before adjusting the picture

The monitor’s advertised maximum refresh rate is not necessarily available at every resolution or on every input. The active mode depends on the monitor, graphics source, selected connection, and any relevant model-specific restrictions. Check the manual for the exact input you use, then verify the active resolution and refresh rate in the operating system.

  1. Check the monitor manual for the supported resolution and refresh rate on the input you plan to use.
  2. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose the highest refresh rate offered for the current setup. Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guidance explains how to view and change the setting.
  3. Enable VRR if both the source and monitor support the same compatible implementation. VRR dynamically adapts the display refresh rate to supported content frame rates; check the monitor manual for mode interactions that could limit availability.

Specifications are model-specific. For example, ASUS lists the ROG Swift OLED PG48UQ as a 3840 × 2160 display with HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, and a 138 Hz overclocked refresh rate. That describes this model, not a default setting or a capability shared by every 4K OLED monitor. See the PG48UQ specifications.

Enable HDR for HDR games

For HDR content, turn HDR on in the source and select an HDR mode supported by the monitor. In Windows, select the HDR display and go to Settings > System > Display to enable HDR. Available monitor modes and formats vary by model; for instance, ASUS lists HDR10 and Dolby Vision support for the PG32UCDM. Consult the model’s manual or specifications rather than assuming every OLED offers the same options. See Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guidance and ASUS’s PG32UCDM specifications.

Calibrate HDR with test patterns

Do not rely on a generic brightness number: HDR behavior differs between displays. On Windows 11, the Windows HDR Calibration app provides patterns for setting the darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail, and maximum display brightness, with an optional saturation adjustment. Run it with HDR enabled and follow the pattern instructions. The effect of its saturation adjustment depends on the display’s characteristics. Microsoft documents the workflow and requirements in its HDR Calibration app guide.

Many games also include their own HDR calibration screens. Use the game’s pattern to set black detail and highlight clipping, and avoid pushing highlights past the point where detail disappears just to make the image seem brighter. A platform or game calibration adjusts how its content is presented; it does not make one set of values correct for every monitor.

Balance SDR brightness while HDR is on

When Windows HDR is enabled, SDR desktop content can appear too bright or too dark relative to HDR. Windows provides an SDR/HDR balance slider for this, but Microsoft notes that the result varies by display make and model. Adjust it to suit your display and viewing preference instead of treating a particular slider position as universal. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.

Keep SDR color adjustments restrained

For ordinary SDR gaming, begin with a neutral or standard picture preset. Avoid increasing saturation or changing color temperature without a specific target: the names and behavior of OSD controls differ by model, and settings from another monitor do not necessarily translate. For HDR games, use the display’s supported HDR mode and calibrate through the game or platform. If color accuracy matters, use a defined calibration target and the exact monitor documentation rather than guessing at RGB gains.

Monitor features can also be conditional. The ASUS PG27UCDM user guide, for example, says OLED Anti-Flicker is limited to a specified refresh-rate range and input sources. That is a model-specific restriction, but it illustrates why an OSD option should be checked in the manual rather than assumed to work in every configuration. See the PG27UCDM user guide.
