To make text and apps easier to read on an Android phone, adjust Font size and Display size separately in Settings. Use Accessibility magnification for details that remain too small, and try contrast or reading features only where they improve the apps and content you actually use. Menu names and availability vary by device and Android version, so search Settings if a path differs.
Choose the right setting for what is hard to see

Increase text size without changing everything else
- Open Settings and search for Font size.
- Move the slider until its preview is comfortable, then check the apps you use most.
- If your device offers a Font size tile in Quick Settings, you can use it to adjust text there too. Google documents adjustment up to 200% on its current help page; this is the setting’s documented range, not a guarantee that every app will display text correctly. Google notes that the font-size setting does not apply to some apps. If a particular app remains small, look for its own text-size or zoom control rather than repeatedly increasing the system slider.

Enlarge buttons and other interface elements
- In Settings, search for Display size.
- Adjust the slider and inspect the preview, including the screens you use most.
- If the layout becomes cramped or you prefer the original scale, use the display-size reset option where available.
Font size and display size solve different problems: increase font size when text alone is too small; increase display size when controls and other on-screen items also need to be larger.
Magnify a small area when needed
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Magnification. If the path is different, search Settings for Magnification.
- Turn on a magnification shortcut and choose the shortcut offered on your device. Its placement can depend on your navigation setup.
- Use the shortcut when content needs a closer look. Google documents full-screen and partial-screen magnification, with magnification up to 8x on its current help page. Source: Google Android Accessibility Help, checked 2026.
With magnification active, drag with two fingers to move around and pinch with two fingers to change zoom. Depending on the device’s settings, magnification may turn off when you open or close an app. A triple-tap shortcut can also introduce a short delay to single taps, so try the available shortcut and keep the one that works best for you.

Use contrast and color options selectively
Bold text and color correction
Search Settings for Bold text or Color correction and try the options available on your device. Some apps do not use the bold-text setting, and color correction is not available on every device. Google’s text and display settings guidance lists these options and availability caveats.
Dark theme and color inversion
Dark theme changes Android system screens and supported apps, but it does not change media such as videos. Color inversion changes the whole display, including media. On Android 16, expanded dark theme can darken interfaces in many apps without native dark-theme support, but some apps may be excluded or opt out; images may look different and text over images may become harder to read. Google’s guidance describes these effects. Check photos, video, and the screens you rely on, and turn an option off if it makes anything less legible.

Try Reading Mode for text-heavy content
Reading Mode can adjust contrast, color, and font size for text in websites and apps, and can read content aloud. It is useful for a passage or page that is difficult to read, but it is not a universal way to enlarge an app’s menus, controls, or entire interface. Android’s font setting affects app text when the app uses scalable-pixel (sp) text sizes. An app with fixed or constrained layouts may crop or obscure text when it grows; raising the system setting further cannot repair that layout. Google’s text scaling guidance explains the technical reason.

- Check whether the app has its own text-size, display, or zoom setting.
- Use Reading Mode for text content when available, or magnification for a small region of the screen.
- If a larger setting disrupts a screen you need, reduce it enough to restore the layout and use one of those targeted options for the difficult content.
Android’s developer guidance recommends scalable text and layouts that can expand. It also advises developers to test at the largest accessibility font size and review screens in portrait and landscape where available. Android features and menu labels vary by version, manufacturer, and market. Google’s current help pages mention Android 16 for expanded dark theme, outline text, and magnifier keyboard features, and Android 14 for the magnifier settings panel. If your menus do not match these instructions, search Settings for the feature name and use the options your device provides.
