Before buying a game key from a third-party store, confirm the activation platform, exact game and edition, eligible country, and the seller’s written refund and support terms. A low price is not enough: if a key is invalid, region-restricted, already used, or later revoked, Steam generally cannot refund a purchase made outside its Store.
Check the platform and exact edition
Make sure the listing identifies the service where the key activates: for example, Steam or another launcher. A key for one platform does not necessarily work on another. Steam distinguishes Steam keys from keys used with third-party clients or services in its region-restriction guidance.

Then match the listing to the game and edition you intend to buy. Check the edition name and any included content, such as expansions or bonus items, rather than relying on a product image or a shortened title. If the platform or edition is unclear, ask the seller before paying and keep its written response.

Confirm the key works in your country
Do not assume a label such as “global” settles regional eligibility. Steam says CD-key restrictions vary by publisher and advises buyers to ask the retailer about restrictions before buying. The seller should be able to confirm whether the specific key can be activated in your country; a generic region description is not a substitute for that confirmation.

Understand what can go wrong—and who handles it
A key may be invalid, already used, for a different game, or restricted in your region. It may also be revoked later. Steam says a revoked key was revoked by the game’s publisher and directs buyers who obtained it from a third-party site to seek a refund from that seller. Steam’s scam guidance likewise warns that CD keys can be for another game, fake, used, or region-restricted.
Before purchase, find the seller’s written terms for each likely failure: an unused key that will not activate, a key that has already been redeemed, or a key revoked after activation. Check the deadline for reporting a problem, what evidence the seller requires, and whether support is reachable through a clear channel. Do not assume that a seller’s promise of help means a refund is guaranteed; the actual terms govern.

Know the refund route before paying
Steam’s Store refund policy generally allows a refund request for a game within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Those thresholds apply to purchases made through Steam, not to a Steam key bought elsewhere: Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys. Steam Support also says it cannot offer refunds on CD keys purchased from third-party retailers.

For a key-store purchase, the seller is the practical refund route. Read the seller’s policy before checkout, including whether it covers invalid, unused, or revoked keys and how long you have to report a problem. Save the listing, checkout terms, receipt, and any messages with the seller in case you need to make a claim.

Compare the whole offer, not just the headline price
When comparing listings, assess the terms that determine whether the key will work and what happens if it does not:
- Platform: the launcher or service where the code activates.
- Game and edition: the exact title and included content.
- Country eligibility: confirmation for the country where you will activate the key.
- Seller and source transparency: whether the seller explains who is selling the key and where to ask about sourcing or restrictions.
- Checkout total and delivery: the final amount payable and when the key is expected to arrive.
- Failure terms: the seller’s stated refund conditions for unused, invalid, already-used, or revoked keys.
- Support route: how to contact the seller and the time limit for raising an issue.
Seller listings, availability, and terms can change. Recheck the exact page and policy at checkout, and retain evidence of what was offered. A lower price may not be the better deal if the listing is vague about platform or country, or if the seller gives no clear route for resolving a failed key.

What “authorized” can—and cannot—tell you
Steamworks documentation explains that developers request Steam keys for distribution and that Valve reviews requests with factors such as customer interest and keys already issued and activated. That explains how keys can be issued; it does not confirm that a particular shop is currently authorized to sell a particular game.

A quick pre-purchase check
- Identify the activation platform and match the exact game edition.
- Ask the seller to confirm activation eligibility in your country.
- Read the seller’s refund and support terms for invalid, used, or revoked keys.
- Compare the checkout total, delivery timing, and support route—not only the displayed price.
- Save the listing, the terms shown at checkout, the receipt, and seller correspondence.
