Craft smooth sandstone by placing four regular sandstone blocks in a crafting grid. Cut sandstone and chiseled sandstone are different blocks and do not replace regular sandstone in this recipe.
Recipe for smooth sandstone
- Collect four regular sandstone blocks.
- Open your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table.
- Place the four blocks in the grid. Their arrangement does not matter.
- Take the smooth sandstone from the result slot.
Minecraft’s official sandstone guide gives the recipe as four blocks of regular sandstone for one smooth sandstone block.

Use the right sandstone variant
The ingredient is regular sandstone—not cut sandstone or chiseled sandstone. These are separate block variants. The Bedrock 1.21.50 changelog mentions stair recipes using cut and chiseled sandstone, but those are stair recipes, not the smooth sandstone recipe.
Find the recipe in the recipe book
If you have the materials but cannot remember a recipe, check the recipe book in your inventory or at a crafting table. Minecraft’s crafting guide explains that the book shows recipes and the supplies they require. If the recipe behaves differently in your game, check the instructions for your edition and version.
