Zone constant linear velocity (ZCLV) is an optical-disc recording method that keeps the recording speed steady within each disc zone, then changes it at the boundary between zones. Outer zones may use higher speeds than inner zones.
How ZCLV works
A disc using ZCLV is divided into regions called zones. The drive records at a constant linear velocity while working within one zone; when it moves to another zone, it selects a different speed. A patent description defines ZCLV this way and describes higher velocities in outer zones. Source

In practical terms, the speed is constant within a zone, not necessarily across the entire disc. The zones let a drive use different recording speeds in different parts of the recording area.
How ZCLV differs from CLV and CAV
| Method | What stays constant | How speed varies across the disc |
|---|---|---|
| CLV (constant linear velocity) | Linear velocity | It stays constant across the disc. Microsoft documentation |
| CAV (constant angular velocity) | Angular velocity | Linear velocity varies with distance from the disc center. Microsoft documentation |
| ZCLV (zone constant linear velocity) | Linear velocity within each zone | Speed changes at zone boundaries; outer zones may use higher speeds. Patent description |
What ZCAV means—and why the labels vary
Microsoft’s optical-disc recording API documentation uses ZCAV for “Zone Constant Linear Velocity” and describes a disc divided into zones where write speed increases after each zone. It also calls ZCAV an impure form of CAV. Microsoft documentation

Terminology is not consistent across the cited sources: ZCLV and Z-CLV are also used for zone constant linear velocity, while Microsoft uses ZCAV for its zoned-speed description. Check how a particular document defines the acronym rather than assuming the labels are interchangeable in every context. Patent description Technical source
Where the method appears
A patent gives DVD-RAM as an example of zoned rotational control: its described data area is divided into zones, with different angular velocities kept constant while the optical pickup accesses data within a zone. That example describes a particular design; it does not establish that every DVD-RAM disc or drive uses the same arrangement. Patent example
