A smart TV that buffers repeatedly usually has a weak or unstable internet connection, though an update may also be needed. Start by checking whether the problem affects one app, the TV, or every device on your home network; that pattern points to the right fix without assuming you need a faster broadband plan.
What the buffering pattern can tell you
Netflix says slow loading or repeated buffering can mean a device has a weak or unstable internet connection, or may need an update. The pattern across apps and devices helps narrow down which part to investigate.

| What you observe | Where to investigate first | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one app buffers on the TV | The app or TV software | Try another app, then check the app or TV maker’s update guidance. Netflix lists an update as a possible cause. Netflix buffering help. |
| Several TV apps buffer, but other devices work | The TV’s connection or software | Run the TV’s network test if available and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if the TV supports it. Netflix buffering help and Netflix connection help. |
| Multiple devices or apps buffer | The home network or internet provider | Restart the modem and router, then ask your provider about outages or network configuration problems if the issue persists. Netflix buffering help. |
| Wi-Fi buffers, but playback is stable over a wired connection | Wi-Fi coverage or wireless conditions | Try improving router placement before considering coverage equipment. Netflix buffering help. |
How to troubleshoot a smart TV that keeps buffering
- Check whether it is one app or the connection. Open a different streaming app on the TV. If the TV has a network test, run it. Also check whether a phone, computer, or another TV on the same network has trouble. Netflix recommends trying another connected app or using the device’s network test for connection errors. Netflix connection help.
- Restart the TV and network equipment. Turn off the TV. Unplug the modem and, if it is a separate unit, the router for 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem and let it settle; then reconnect the router and retry playback. Restart times vary by equipment. Netflix buffering help.
- Improve the Wi-Fi path. Temporarily move the router closer to the TV, or the TV closer to the router. Put the router in an open spot off the floor and away from other wireless devices and appliances. Change one thing at a time and retest, so you can tell whether it helped. Netflix buffering help.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if practical. If both devices have compatible Ethernet ports and you can run a cable, connect the TV directly to the router and retry playback. Stable wired playback alongside unstable Wi-Fi points toward the wireless path, but does not rule out every app, TV, or provider issue. A cable cannot fix a service outage or increase the speed included in your internet plan.
- Contact your internet provider if the problem remains broad. Tell them whether one device or several are affected, whether the TV is connected by Wi-Fi or cable, and when buffering happens. Ask them to check for a local outage, modem or router problems, and incorrect network settings. Netflix buffering help.
Would Ethernet stop the buffering?
It may help if the TV’s Wi-Fi signal or wireless conditions are the problem. A wired-versus-Wi-Fi test is useful because it changes the TV’s connection path while leaving the streaming app and most other factors the same. If wired playback is steady but Wi-Fi is not, focus next on router placement and coverage.
Ethernet is not a guaranteed fix: the TV and router need compatible ports, a cable must reach, and buffering can also come from the app, TV software, or internet service. Treat it as a diagnostic comparison, not as proof that the broadband plan needs to change.

Does the TV need faster internet?
Not necessarily. A plan’s advertised maximum speed alone does not establish whether the TV has a stable connection where it is installed. Netflix publishes recommended connection speeds for streaming quality, but the applicable figure depends on the quality level and its live guidance; check Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations rather than applying one number to every TV, service, or viewing condition.
If you use a speed test, run it near the TV and consider the result alongside whether playback is stable and whether other devices are affected. A single test does not identify whether the app, TV, Wi-Fi path, or provider is responsible.

When to check for TV or app updates
If only one app buffers, first compare it with another app on the same TV. If other apps work normally, consult that app’s support guidance. If several apps on the TV have the same problem while other devices work, check the TV maker’s instructions for software updates and network testing. Menu names and update steps vary by brand, model, operating system, and app.
Stable internet is necessary for streaming, but the exact steps for confirming a connection vary by TV. For manufacturer-specific context, see TCL’s TV connection guidance.
