For reliably smooth transitions, crossfade the tracks in an audio editor, export them as one continuous file, then play that file in OBS as a looping Media Source. OBS can loop supported audio files, but its documentation does not establish that a standard VLC playlist automatically crossfades between separate tracks.
Prepare the tracks so transitions are actually seamless
Arrange the ambient tracks in an audio editor and apply the fades where each track meets the next. Listen through the joins, then export the sequence as one continuous audio file. The crossfades are part of the rendered file, so OBS does not have to coordinate overlapping tracks during playback.

There is no universally correct crossfade duration established by the sources cited here. Choose fades by listening to the material: sustained pads, field recordings, and tracks with distinct attacks can need different treatment. Check the rendered file from beginning to end, including the join at the end and beginning if you intend the whole sequence to loop. A seamless internal transition does not guarantee that the file’s final moment will join smoothly to its opening.

Loop the continuous file in OBS
- Add the audio: In OBS, add a Media Source and select the rendered file. OBS documents Media Source support for MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV audio.
- Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS says this restarts the file after playback completes.
- Check playback: Play the source and listen to the transitions and the file’s end-to-start join. Confirm the source remains available when you change scenes; a source that stops or restarts unexpectedly can disrupt playback.
- Check the live preview: Before broadcasting, confirm the audio is audible in YouTube’s stream preview and that the sequence plays as intended.
This approach keeps the intended track order and transition timing in one file. If you need to change the order, edit and export the sequence again.

Use separate files when playlist flexibility matters
OBS also provides a VLC Video Source for playlists. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Add the source, load the audio files in the order you want, and use its playlist looping and shuffle controls. Leave shuffle off when the sequence is deliberate.
OBS documents playlist playback, looping, and shuffle, but the documentation reviewed does not say that separate playlist entries automatically crossfade. A basic VLC playlist should therefore not be treated as a gapless or crossfading solution. If smooth transitions are essential, pre-render the crossfades into one file, or independently verify any additional mixer or plugin setup before relying on it live.

OBS lists VLC source visibility behavior as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible by default. Check the source’s visibility behavior in your scene setup so a scene change does not unexpectedly interrupt or restart the playlist.

- Enable live streaming: Make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select a stream: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Enter the connection details in OBS: Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview: Start streaming from OBS, then check YouTube’s preview before starting the live broadcast. Confirm the picture and audio are present.
- Run the playlist end-to-end: Listen for faulty joins, silence, unexpected stops, and the end-to-start join if looping. Check that the source behaves correctly when changing scenes.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Make sure your music rights cover both live transmission and any resulting replay or archive.

Protect the stream from music-rights interruptions
YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. Its Help documentation says a match may cause a placeholder to replace the live stream; if the identified content remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent that interruption: YouTube advises creators with licensed third-party material to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist.
- Confirm that your permission covers live streaming, the relevant territories, and any archive or replay.
- If a rights owner has registered the material with Content ID, ask whether your channel can be allowlisted before the broadcast.
- Do not assume that purchasing or possessing an audio file gives you permission to retransmit it.
Common playback problems and fixes
- Tracks play one after another with an audible gap: A playlist’s loop setting does not establish that its entries crossfade. Crossfade and render the sequence into one file, then loop that file.
- The playlist order changes: Turn shuffle off in the VLC Video Source when you need a fixed sequence.
- The source stops or starts over after a scene change: Check the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test scene changes before going live.
- The audio is missing from YouTube’s preview: Check that OBS is playing the intended source and that the preview receives its audio before starting the broadcast.
- The stream is replaced or interrupted during playback: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review your rights and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
