How to Stream a Looping Sleep Story Playlist on YouTube Live from a VPS

You can stream a looping sleep story playlist to YouTube Live from a VPS by storing the media on the server, running an encoder such as FFmpeg to send it to YouTube over RTMPS, and supervising the encoder process. YouTube supplies the ingest server URL and stream key in Live Control Room; the VPS keeps the encoder running without a home computer. Treat the sample commands below as a starting pattern to adapt and test, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

How the setup works

The path is: story and visual files on the VPS → an encoder that plays and loops them → an RTMPS connection → your YouTube Live broadcast. A VPS is a hosted virtual server; FFmpeg is one possible headless encoder. YouTube accepts encoder-based broadcasts, while the VPS provider controls the server resources, storage, network route, and plan limits.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. The RTMPS ingestion documentation describes it as an RTMP stream tunneled through an SSL connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Prepare the playlist and VPS

Check rights and media

  • Confirm you have the rights to every story, narration recording, sound effect, music bed, and image or video in the broadcast. Permission for a story does not automatically cover a recording, soundtrack, or visual supplied by someone else.
  • Check that all files play correctly and that transitions do not create abrupt silence, loudness changes, or unwanted gaps. There is no universal sleep-story loudness target established here; listen to the complete sequence at a comfortable level and adjust it for consistency.
  • Choose a simple visual, such as a still image or slow-moving background, if that suits the channel. Encode the visual and audio in formats supported by your chosen FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest settings.
  • Keep a copy of the playlist and configuration outside the VPS. Confirm the provider’s storage, bandwidth or egress limits, compute capacity, and support terms before choosing a plan. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universal VPS CPU, RAM, or disk requirement.

Choose how to run the encoder

FFmpeg on a headless VPS avoids needing a graphical desktop, but requires command-line setup and a process supervisor if you want the encoder restarted after a process exit. OBS or another graphical encoder may be easier to monitor interactively, but requires a desktop environment and may use more server resources. These are practical trade-offs, not measured performance comparisons. In either case, test the actual playlist and server rather than assuming a provider or configuration will stay connected.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. Open YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and go to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If you have never streamed live before, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create or select a broadcast and configure its visibility and details. For initial testing, use private or unlisted visibility if available for the broadcast.
  3. In the encoder connection details, copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them into the encoder configuration on the VPS, using RTMPS when the selected YouTube ingest option provides it.
  4. Protect the stream key as a credential. Do not put it in a public repository, share it in screenshots, or expose it in shell history or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

Choose encoder settings and test the VPS connection

Start with a modest resolution and frame rate appropriate for a mostly static sleep-story visual; higher settings increase bandwidth and encoding demands without necessarily improving that viewing experience. Select a video bitrate from YouTube’s current resolution- and frame-rate-specific guidance rather than relying on one bitrate for every server or channel.

  • Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure ingestion option. Confirm that the encoder URL and selected ingest mode match.
  • Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported video codecs. Use a codec supported by your encoder and chosen ingest configuration.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3. Check that your output has an audio track and that it is audible in the Live Control Room preview.
  • Rate control: YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding for its recommended settings.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps; choose a rate suitable for the visual rather than assuming the maximum is necessary.

Before publishing, test the VPS upload capacity with the intended settings, representative audio, and the actual visual motion. YouTube advises testing upload speed, selecting a quality the connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health. The live settings page may change, so verify its current bitrate table when configuring the encoder: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Loop files with FFmpeg

The following is an illustrative pattern for a single video file with audio, not a universal command for every playlist or FFmpeg build. Replace the file path, server URL, and key; select codecs and bitrate appropriate to the file, server capacity, and current YouTube settings. Keep the stream key out of any saved command line or script that others can read.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/sleep-stories/story.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This example uses H.264 video at 30 frames per second, a two-second GOP interval expressed as 60 frames, AAC audio, and a sample video bitrate. The bitrate is not a recommendation for every resolution or channel: consult YouTube’s current table and test the real VPS connection. Replace the placeholder RTMPS address with the exact server URL and key format provided in Live Control Room.

For a playlist of separate files, prepare a compatible playlist input for FFmpeg or create a single assembled file before streaming. Confirm the selected demuxer’s looping behavior with your actual files; not every playlist format handles looping and timing the same way. A public community example demonstrates FFmpeg on Ubuntu with systemd for a continuous YouTube stream, but it is an implementation example rather than YouTube’s required method or proof of uptime: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.

Keep the encoder process supervised

A process supervisor such as systemd can start the encoder at boot and restart it after a process exit. It cannot guarantee that YouTube remains connected, the VPS network stays available, or a restart produces an uninterrupted broadcast. Adapt the service to your server, protect its configuration, and verify its behavior after a deliberate restart before relying on it.

Put the FFmpeg invocation in a script readable only by the account that needs it, and store the stream key with appropriate access controls rather than embedding it in a publicly visible unit file. After adapting the service, enable and start it with:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now sleep-story-stream.service
sudo systemctl status sleep-story-stream.service

Use the actual unit filename consistently; the example unit name above is sleep-story-stream.service. Check its logs with journalctl -u sleep-story-stream.service, while ensuring logs do not reveal the stream key.

Test, publish, and monitor

  1. Start the encoder and confirm that the broadcast appears in Live Control Room.
  2. Check the preview, audio, and YouTube stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
  3. Publish only after the test looks and sounds right. Watch for dropped connections, encoder exits, resource pressure, and unexpected playlist gaps.
  4. Monitor both sides of the connection: the VPS process and its network/resource use, and YouTube’s stream health. A supervisor restart is evidence only that the process was restarted, not that viewers experienced an uninterrupted stream.
  5. Recheck the stream key and encoder status after server maintenance, configuration changes, or any broadcast failure.

Plan for YouTube archiving and policy

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a multi-day encoder session will produce one complete archive: the encoder continuing to send video and YouTube retaining an archive are separate things. If a saved replay matters, plan the broadcast duration around YouTube’s documented archive limit and confirm the result in Studio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rights to the material and monetization eligibility are separate questions. You need appropriate rights for all included content, and the available technical guidance does not establish whether a particular repetitive, prerecorded sleep-story format qualifies for monetization or meets every current YouTube content policy. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies before making eligibility assumptions.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no signal Wrong server URL or stream key, inactive broadcast, or mismatched ingest protocol Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS settings, and restart the encoder with the corrected configuration.
Stream health is poor or the feed drops VPS upload path cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, or the server/network is unstable Test the connection with representative media, reduce output quality or bitrate according to YouTube’s current table, and review provider network and egress limits.
Video appears but audio is missing or distorted Input has no usable audio track, the wrong stream is mapped, or encoding settings are incompatible Inspect the input’s audio stream, verify AAC or MP3 output, and listen to the Live Control Room preview before publishing.
The feed stops when a file ends The input loop option is missing or does not apply to the playlist format Test looping with the exact input type; use a verified FFmpeg playlist setup or assemble the media into a single file.
The service says active but the broadcast is unavailable The process may be running while disconnected from YouTube, or the broadcast state may have changed Check FFmpeg and systemd logs, stream health in Live Control Room, and whether the key or broadcast needs updating.
There is no single full replay after a long run YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours Schedule sessions within that documented duration if retaining an automatic archive is important.
