What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the OBS workflow that matches how you want the videos to advance: use a VLC Video source for an ordered playlist, separate scenes and Studio Mode to switch manually, or an Advanced Scene Switcher macro to change scenes when a clip ends. A playlist advances clips inside one source; it does not switch OBS scenes. In every case, OBS sends its finished output to YouTube through the stream server URL and key configured for the broadcast.
Choose the right switching method
| What you want | Start with | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play multiple videos in order without operator input | VLC Video playlist | Requires VLC; playlist settings control looping, shuffle, and playback when hidden. |
| Choose exactly when the next video appears | Separate scenes with Studio Mode | An operator must trigger each transition. |
| Switch scenes when a clip ends | Advanced Scene Switcher macro | Requires a third-party plugin and compatibility checks; test its behavior before going live. |
Set up a playlist that plays videos in sequence
Use this option when the clips should run one after another inside the same OBS source. OBS’s ordinary Media Source is for an individual local file; VLC Video supports a playlist. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

- Install VLC if needed. If VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source choices, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. The OBS guide says, “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” The guide is dated January 11, 2022; check it if source behavior or labels differ in your OBS version.
- Add the playlist source. In the target scene, use Sources → + → VLC Video, name the source, then add the local video files in the intended order. Confirm the list order before streaming.
- Set playlist behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after the last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for sequential playback; OBS documents shuffle as off by default and looping as on by default, but verify both settings rather than relying on defaults.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. Set the VLC source’s visibility/playback behavior deliberately. Depending on the option selected, playback may stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue while the source is not visible.
- Place and check the source. Resize, crop, and position the video in the scene. Check audio routing and levels, and review the Sources dock order: sources higher in the list appear over sources below them. OBS explains layering and visibility in its Sources Guide.
- Test it before broadcasting. Record or run a private/unlisted test, check that the next clip starts as expected, and listen for level changes or gaps. OBS recommends testing scene setup and stream performance before the first live stream.
Switch videos manually with Studio Mode
Use separate scenes when a person should decide when each video goes live. Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in Preview without changing the scene currently sent to the stream.
Recommended Free Tools
- Create a scene for each clip. In each scene, add the local video as a Media Source and select its file. Configure Restart playback when source becomes active if returning to that scene should start the clip from the beginning.
- Choose how inactive playback behaves. If Close file when inactive is enabled, returning to a scene can involve a short reload period. Test the setting with the actual files and scene changes you plan to use.
- Enable Studio Mode. The live Program view is on the right and the editable Preview view is on the left. Select the next scene in Preview while the current scene remains live.
- Set and trigger the transition. Choose a transition, such as Cut or Fade, and set its duration. When ready, click Transition, use a configured transition hotkey, or use a Quick Transition. Check the result in the Program view.
OBS describes Studio Mode and transitions in its Quick Start Guide. Studio Mode provides operator control; it does not decide when a clip has ended.

Switch scenes automatically when a clip ends
OBS’s built-in scene tools are not established here as providing this specific media-ended workflow. A common route is a macro in the third-party Advanced Scene Switcher plugin, which supports media conditions and scene-switch actions. Plugin features and compatibility can change: its listing showed version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, with OBS 31.1.1 as the minimum supported OBS version. Check the current listing and operating-system support before installing.
- Install a compatible plugin version and restart OBS if required.
- In Advanced Scene Switcher, create and enable a macro that checks the relevant media source for playback completion and switches to the intended next scene.
- Constrain the macro to the expected scene and source names. Add a known fallback scene or other safe outcome so an unexpected clip ending does not trigger an unintended scene loop.
- Test clips of different lengths, scene returns, and loop/restart behavior in a recording or test broadcast. Confirm that the trigger fires once at the right time and that the next scene is the one you expect.
Plugin-specific controls may vary by version; do not assume a macro will behave identically after an OBS or plugin update. The available documentation does not establish frame-perfect or seamless transitions.

Connect OBS to YouTube separately
Media playback and scene switching happen in OBS. YouTube connection settings deliver OBS’s resulting program output; they do not choose which clip is active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and open its Live Control Room details.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. The exact connection flow can vary with the selected service and OBS version.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube Help calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”: the key and server information tell the encoder where to send the feed and let YouTube accept it. Follow YouTube’s current live streaming instructions.
- Check YouTube’s latency and DVR choices for your audience. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; DVR lets viewers pause and resume from their paused position. Neither setting controls OBS scene selection.
Rights and broadcast checks
- Only stream prerecorded video and audio you have the rights to use, including any music, footage, and other embedded material. YouTube’s live streaming rules and Community Guidelines apply to stream content.
- Check the stream’s video framing, audio levels, scene order, and any on-screen overlays in a test before promoting the live broadcast.
- Do not assume the stream will stop when a playlist ends. The playlist settings described above govern playback; they do not establish automatic end-of-broadcast behavior.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match the OBS architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Playlist plays clips in an unexpected order | Shuffle is enabled or the playlist order is wrong. | Turn off Shuffle Playlist and review the file order in the source. |
| A playlist stops after the final clip | Looping is off. | Enable Loop Playlist if the clips should repeat. This does not end or restart the YouTube broadcast. |
| A clip resumes partway through or restarts unexpectedly | The source’s visibility behavior or Media Source restart setting does not match the intended workflow. | Set the VLC hidden-source behavior intentionally, or check Restart playback when source becomes active for an individual Media Source. |
| There is a pause when returning to a scene | Close file when inactive may require the media file to reload. | Test with that option disabled if appropriate, or allow for the reload in the show timing. |
| Studio Mode selection changes nothing on the live output | The new scene is in Preview, not Program. | Use Transition or the configured transition control when you are ready to take it live. |
| An automatic scene change does not happen or fires repeatedly | The macro may be watching the wrong media source, using incompatible software, or lacking conditions that limit repeat triggers. | Check plugin/OBS compatibility, source and scene names, macro conditions, and the fallback; test with clips of different lengths. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The stream server URL or key may be missing or incorrect. | Compare OBS’s stream connection settings with the current values in YouTube Live Control Room and keep the key private. |
