Wait until the content you need is visible, then use your browser’s Print command and choose its PDF destination. If the PDF is blank or incomplete, the browser may have printed before the page’s JavaScript finished rendering—or the page’s print layout may differ from its on-screen layout.
Save a loaded webpage as a PDF manually
- Open the webpage and wait for the content. Confirm the specific text, images, or results you need are visible. If the site loads more material as you scroll, scroll through the relevant sections first; that can help expose content, but does not guarantee the site will include everything in its print output.
- Open the browser’s Print command. In Firefox, choose Save to PDF as the destination. Other browsers may use different labels or place the command elsewhere.
- Review the print preview. Adjust orientation, page range, paper size, scale, margins, backgrounds, and headers or footers as needed. Websites can apply a print stylesheet that rearranges or omits material compared with the screen. Firefox’s print documentation describes its PDF destination and layout controls.
- Save and verify the file. Reopen the PDF and check that the content appears and that pages are not clipped.
Why a dynamic webpage can produce a blank PDF
A browser reaching a navigation milestone does not necessarily mean a client-rendered page has finished building its content. A single-page app may fetch data, render components, or reveal content after the initial document loads. If printing or automated capture starts too early, the result can be empty or incomplete.

For a manual capture, wait for the actual content you need—not merely for the tab to stop showing a loading indicator. For an automated capture, wait for a page-specific element or a deliberate readiness condition. chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf https://developer.chrome.com/Use the Chrome executable name and path appropriate to your installation. Chrome’s command-line reference also documents --timeout to set a maximum wait before capture, and --virtual-time-budget to advance time-dependent code. These controls can help with pages that need additional time, but a fixed time budget does not prove that a specific piece of asynchronous content is ready. Troubleshoot blank or incomplete PDFs
- The PDF is blank. Return to the page and verify that the target content is visible before printing. In automation, wait for the element that represents the content instead of relying only on the initial navigation event.
- Some content is missing. If the page loads sections as you scroll, visit the relevant sections before printing. For automation, use a selector wait or a suitable network-idle condition; the exact readiness signal depends on the page.
- The layout differs from the screen. Inspect print preview and check scale, paper size, orientation, margins, backgrounds, and headers or footers. The site may intentionally use a different print stylesheet.
- Headless capture starts too early. A maximum timeout can allow more time, but it is not a content-readiness check. Prefer a known selector or another explicit signal when available.
- The capture waits indefinitely or is slow. Some pages keep network connections active, making network-idle an unsuitable signal. Use a selector tied to the content you need when possible, or configure a maximum wait in your capture workflow.
FAQ
Does a browser’s “page loaded” event mean dynamic content is ready?
No. Client-side JavaScript may add or update content after the initial navigation event. A visible target element or an explicit readiness condition is a stronger signal for capture.

Will a PDF always look exactly like the webpage?
No. Print stylesheets and page settings can change how the site appears on paper or in a PDF. Preview and inspect the saved file before relying on it.
Is a screenshot the same as saving a webpage as a PDF?
No. A PDF is a paginated document; a screenshot is an image capture. Choose based on the format you need.
