To play multiple MP4 files in sequence in OBS on a Windows PC, install VLC, then add them as a VLC Video source. OBS’s standard Media Source can play a single MP4, but VLC Video is the source intended for a playlist. If VLC Video is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS—for example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these source options.
Set up an MP4 playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Download and install the VLC version that matches your OBS architecture. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you install VLC while OBS is open, close and reopen OBS before checking its source list.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, select the scene where you want the videos, click the + in the Sources panel, and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name and confirm.
- Add files to the playlist. In the source properties, add your MP4 files to the playlist. Start with one file you know plays correctly, then add the rest.
- Choose playback behavior. For a sequence that repeats, leave shuffle off and enable Loop Playlist. Set whether playback should stop when the source is not visible according to how you use scenes: stopping when hidden avoids unnecessary playback, while continuing can be useful if the source may be hidden briefly.
- Test in OBS. Start playback and check both the picture and sound in the OBS preview or output. Do not assume that a file works in the playlist just because its name ends in .mp4.
Choose the right OBS source
| OBS source | Playlist support | Dependency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | Not the playlist source described by OBS | OBS | Playing one media file, including MP4 |
| VLC Video | Accepts a list of media items | VLC installed with architecture matching OBS | Playing multiple files as a playlist |
These distinctions follow OBS’s source documentation. If you only need one clip, Media Source is usually the simpler choice; for a playlist, use VLC Video.

Why an MP4 may fail, appear blank, or have no sound
MP4 identifies a container, not a guarantee about the audio and video codecs inside it. Two files ending in .mp4 can contain different encodings, resolutions, frame rates, bit depths, or audio layouts. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide lists containers and codecs separately. Microsoft likewise lists MP4 among Windows Media Player file types while noting that additional codecs can expand supported formats: Microsoft’s supported file types.

Check the video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, and audio channel layout. Then test the file in the OBS source you plan to use. VideoLAN lists MP4 and H.264/AVC among VLC’s supported formats, but that does not establish that every encoding will play smoothly on every Windows PC or OBS/VLC build. VLC’s Windows FAQ notes that H.264 playback can be too slow in some circumstances: VLC features and VLC for Windows FAQ.

Troubleshoot the playlist
- VLC Video is not in the source menu: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. Restart OBS after installation. The documented dependency is VLC; restarting OBS is a practical step to make it detect a newly installed library.
- The playlist does not advance through files: Confirm you added the items to a VLC Video source rather than adding a single file as a Media Source. Check that the playlist contains more than one item and that playback is not paused.
- The video is blank or will not start: Test one known-good file first. Inspect the problem file’s codecs and encoding characteristics; its MP4 extension alone cannot identify the cause.
- The picture works but audio is silent: Check that the file contains an audio stream, inspect its codec and channel layout, and verify OBS’s audio meters and output routing while the clip plays.
- Playback stutters: Check the file’s resolution, frame rate, and encoding characteristics as well as system load. VLC’s Windows FAQ notes that H.264 playback can be too slow in some circumstances, so codec support alone does not guarantee smooth playback.
- Only certain files fail: Compare their media information with a file that plays. Convert only if testing points to an encoding incompatibility, and keep the original so you can revert.
When conversion may help
Renaming a file extension does not convert its contents. A remux changes the container while copying the existing encoded audio and video streams; a transcode decodes and re-encodes one or more streams. Remuxing will not fix an unsupported codec inside the file. Transcoding may improve compatibility, but can take time and affect quality or file size. The right choice depends on the file’s codecs and the player you need to support; the cited format guidance does not establish one universal conversion preset.
- Inspect a file that fails and one that works, and compare their video and audio properties.
- If the codecs appear compatible but the container is the likely issue, test a remux on a copy.
- If the encoded streams are the issue, transcode a copy to a format supported by the intended playback setup; treat any preset as something to test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Play the converted copy in VLC, then test it in the OBS VLC Video source. Preserve the original until the OBS test succeeds.
Does the setup differ in India?
The OBS and VLC workflow described here is not country-specific. The cited documentation does not establish a separate India-only setup or codec package. Exact behavior can vary with installed OBS and VLC builds, file encoding, and PC hardware; OBS’s media guidance is dated 2022-01-11 and its formats guide is dated 2023-03-26, rather than a compatibility matrix for every current version.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than manage playback from a Windows PC, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
