Batch-compressing prerecorded videos can make them smaller to store or upload, but it does not lower the bitrate of a separate live camera or encoder feed. For a low-data connection, prepare copies of your videos in HandBrake, then choose and test YouTube’s live resolution and bitrate separately against your actual upload capacity.
Batch compression and live streaming solve different problems
Batch compression converts prerecorded files ahead of time. It can reduce the size of those files, depending on their duration, content, codec, and chosen quality. A live encoder instead has to encode and transmit video in real time. Compressing a playlist does not automatically reduce the bitrate of a separate live feed.

YouTube also transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, so an already-compressed file is not a way to bypass YouTube’s live ingest settings. Use compression for prepared recordings and set live output based on measured upload capacity. HandBrake’s official preset guidance and YouTube’s encoder guidance describe these separate parts of the workflow.

1. Protect your source files
Keep the originals and write compressed outputs to a separate folder. That way, if the chosen preset makes the picture or sound unsuitable, you can revise the settings without losing the source.

2. Pick a consistent starting preset
HandBrake’s official presets are designed to apply compatibility-related settings. They can downscale higher-resolution sources or limit higher frame rates. The default Fast 1080p30 preset is a starting option; HandBrake’s Creator presets are intended for hosting services such as YouTube and aim to reduce generational loss from later platform re-encoding. Neither is a guaranteed low-data target for every source or connection.
Choose a preset that makes sense for your source and intended use, then apply it consistently to the batch. The preset table describes trade-offs among encoding speed, picture quality, and expected file size; the best balance depends on the footage and your quality requirements. See HandBrake’s preset documentation for the current options.
3. Queue the files and make a short test first
Add the source videos to HandBrake’s queue using the same preset, and save the outputs under distinct names in the separate destination folder. Before processing everything, encode a short representative section or one typical video. Check fine detail, fast movement, and audio; adjust the preset or settings if the result is visibly too soft, jerky, or otherwise unsuitable.

There is no universal output size or compression percentage to promise: the result varies with the source, duration, content, codec, and chosen quality. Measure the test output before estimating storage or upload time for the full batch.

Set YouTube Live quality from the connection, not the compressed files
Measure upload capacity and leave room for instability
YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Measure at the place and time you expect to stream, and choose a live setting that is stable rather than treating a brief peak as guaranteed capacity. Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health in YouTube during the event. Network performance can vary; this advice is not an India-specific speed guarantee.
Use YouTube’s H.264 figures as starting guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists these H.264 figures for the stated resolution and frame rate. They are guidance, not a promise that a connection at the listed rate will remain stable; test at your location and leave practical margin.
| Live output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For a constrained connection, lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce the required live bitrate, with a trade-off in detail or motion smoothness. The figures above are YouTube’s listed H.264 values, not rates for every codec. Check the YouTube encoder settings page for its current table before configuring a stream.
Configure the encoder and protocol
For the common RTMP/RTMPS path, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported encoder settings, up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use constant bitrate encoding and AAC or MP3 audio. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube says it encrypts data in transit to its servers. Follow the specific encoder’s labels and YouTube’s current instructions for entering these values.

- Small Aerator for Ponds up to 16,000 Gallons and 4 Feet Deep -- Increases water circulation and oxygen saturation, improving the natural ecosystem. Ideal for a backyard pond or small outdoor fishpond.
- Improves Water Quality & Clarity -- Bottom-diffused aerators push air through dual diffuser sticks and into your pond. Aeration supports beneficial bacteria, clearing water and eliminating pond muck.
- Quiet Operation & Energy Efficient -- Powered by an energy-efficient electric compressor, with near-silent 24/7 operation. Aerate your koi pond, water feature, or water garden for just pennies a day.
- Various Uses -- Aerator kits can also be used in a large aquarium, stock tank, or hydroponic application. Any small waterbody will benefit from these aeration kits, which are designed for 24-7 use.
- Maintains Hole in Winter Ice - Aeration kits release small bubbles from diffuser sticks, creating water circulation and maintaining an opening in ice. Allows toxic gases to escape, benefiting fish.
Codec options depend on the ingestion protocol. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 and HEVC for HLS, and H.264 and VP9 for DASH. The HLS ingestion guide says HEVC generally yields 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality compared with H.264; this is a qualified general comparison, not a guaranteed reduction for your files or setup. HLS and DASH are segment-based options with higher latency than RTMP, and YouTube says HLS is not suitable for ultra-low latency. Choose only a protocol your encoder supports and that fits your latency needs. See the protocol comparison and HLS ingestion guidance.

- Measure upload speed: run a speed test on the connection and at the location you will use.
- Choose a conservative live setting: use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance, lowering resolution or frame rate if needed for stability.
- Enter the encoder settings: set the codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, audio format, and RTMP/RTMPS or other supported protocol as applicable.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test: include the kinds of motion and audio present in the real stream.
- Check stream health: watch YouTube’s messages and adjust settings before the event if the connection or output is unstable.
Keep the live stream’s bitrate decision separate from the size of the prerecorded batch. A pre-compressed playlist may reduce storage or upload needs for those files, but it does not make a separate camera feed use less live bandwidth.
Handle interrupted uploads separately from live ingest
If you upload prepared recordings through the YouTube Data API and a transfer is interrupted, Google documents a resumable upload protocol that can continue from the last successfully uploaded range. Google identifies large files and low-bandwidth or unstable connections as useful cases for resumable uploads. This guidance is specifically for the API protocol; it does not establish that every YouTube Studio upload follows the same procedure. Read Google’s resumable upload documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock from prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
