The playlist’s 24-hour schedule does not mean you must upload one 24-hour video. This estimate covers file transfer only; YouTube processing can take additional time.
Calculate upload time from file size and upload speed
When file sizes are in decimal gigabytes (GB) and your upload speed is in megabits per second (Mbps), use:

Estimated hours = total file size in GB × 8,000 ÷ upload speed in Mbps ÷ 3,600

For a quicker estimate, use hours ≈ total GB × 2.222 ÷ upload Mbps. Add the sizes of every file in the playlist before calculating. If your speed is shown in megabytes per second (MB/s), do not multiply by eight again: one byte contains eight bits.

Example: 100 GB at 20 Mbps
100 × 8,000 ÷ 20 ÷ 3,600 is about 11.1 hours. That is a transfer calculation, not a guaranteed completion time. Actual speed can fluctuate, and retries or interruptions can add time.
Check whether the size is GB or GiB
File-size displays may use decimal GB or binary gibibytes (GiB). Keep units consistent in your calculation. For a deadline, use a conservative estimate of the upload speed you can sustain, rather than assuming a speed-test maximum will hold for the entire upload.
Estimate file size when the videos are not exported yet
If you do not yet have final files, estimate their size from duration and the expected total bitrate:

Approximate decimal GB = duration in seconds × total bitrate in Mbps ÷ 8,000
Total bitrate includes both video and audio. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is not necessarily the total bitrate, so add the audio bitrate if you want a closer estimate. An exported sample or the encoder’s expected file size is usually a better planning input. Variable bitrate, content complexity, codec, frame rate, quality settings and audio can all change the result.
YouTube’s recommended SDR video bitrates
YouTube publishes the following recommended upload video bitrates for SDR. These are encoding recommendations, not measurements of your internet connection or promises about the size of your finished files.

| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p, standard frame rate (24/25/30 fps) | 5 Mbps |
| 720p, high frame rate (48/50/60 fps) | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p, standard frame rate (24/25/30 fps) | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, high frame rate (48/50/60 fps) | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), high frame rate | 53–68 Mbps |
YouTube recommends MP4 as a container and H.264 as one of the video codec options in its recommended upload encoding settings. These settings can help plan an export, but the actual file size depends on how the video is encoded.

A 24-hour video is 86,400 seconds long. At a total average bitrate of 8 Mbps, it would be about 86.4 GB decimal: 86,400 × 8 ÷ 8,000. At a sustained 20 Mbps upload speed, the baseline transfer estimate is about 9.6 hours. This assumes 8 Mbps is the total audio-and-video bitrate; YouTube’s 1080p standard-frame-rate recommendation is for video, so it does not establish that total bitrate.
If your playlist consists of multiple files whose combined size is also 86.4 GB, the baseline calculation is the same. Allow extra time for per-file setup, changing network conditions and interruptions.

Plan for YouTube processing after the upload
The formula estimates how long it takes to send your source files—not when every resolution is ready to watch. YouTube initially makes a low-quality version available; HD and 4K processing can continue after transfer ends. Processing time depends on factors including format, duration, frame rate, quality and traffic, and higher-resolution options can be unavailable for several hours.
If viewers need full quality by a particular time, add a processing buffer to your transfer estimate. YouTube Studio’s upload flow can show estimated processing time for SD, HD and 4K, but actual processing may vary. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for audio or video upload issues.
Check individual video limits and playlist workflow
YouTube’s current guidance says verified accounts can upload videos longer than the default 15-minute limit. The maximum upload size is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Older uploads may exceed today’s duration limit. Check your account eligibility and YouTube’s current guidance on uploading videos longer than 15 minutes before planning unusually long files. A single 24-hour video would exceed the stated duration limit, so continuous playback may need multiple files.

In YouTube Studio on a computer, the upload workflow allows selecting up to 15 videos at a time and adding a video to a playlist. That is a batch-selection limit in the described workflow, not a limit of 15 videos in a playlist. See YouTube’s computer upload instructions.

YouTube says, “Uploading times vary depending on your file size.” It identifies file size, bandwidth, upload traffic and quality as factors; upload times can range from a few minutes to several hours. A measured upload rate is a better input than your plan’s advertised maximum, but it still cannot guarantee a result for a long batch.
- Network variation: Upload speed can change during a long transfer. Use a conservative sustained rate and leave a buffer.
- Many separate files: Add their sizes for the baseline calculation, then allow for per-file overhead and possible changes in network conditions.
- Interrupted transfer: YouTube says an interrupted upload can be continued within 24 hours by selecting the same file again. Follow its guidance for a video stuck during upload.
- Processing still underway: A completed transfer does not mean every resolution is ready; plan for processing separately.
Do not use live-stream bandwidth guidance as an upload multiplier
Uploading stored playlist files and sending a live stream are different tasks. A file upload transfers the source data as quickly as the connection and YouTube allow; a live stream sends a continuing signal in real time. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend leaving 20% room in connection capacity for streaming. That guidance is for a live signal, not a universal multiplier for estimating pre-recorded file upload time.
