Capture every listed site at the same phone-sized browser viewport, then resize the screenshots for the directory cards and serve suitable image sizes to different screens. The capture creates a mobile preview; resizing and responsive delivery make it a practical thumbnail. For a self-hosted workflow, Playwright can capture a page or a chosen element. For managed capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server.
Plan the thumbnail before capturing
Choose how the image will appear in your directory before writing the capture job. A compact card usually calls for a consistent viewport screenshot or a selected hero/content element, not an extremely tall full-page image. Decide on the card’s aspect ratio, displayed dimensions, and whether the thumbnail should show the top of the page or a specific section. There is no universally correct viewport, crop, format, or quality setting; judge the result at the size readers will actually see.

- Normalize and validate submitted URLs, and decide how redirects, unavailable pages, and sites that block automated browsing will be handled.
- Use one mobile viewport for all entries so previews are comparable. OpenGraph.io documents an
xspreset of 375 × 812 pixels, described as an iPhone X mobile phone preset; it is an example size, not a universal requirement. OpenGraph.io screenshot API documentation - Choose viewport capture for the mobile first screen, element capture for a particular page component, or full-page capture only when the whole page is useful in the card.
Capture mobile screenshots with Playwright
Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, plus output options such as image type, quality, and scale. The example below uses a fixed mobile viewport, waits for the page to load, and saves a viewport-sized PNG. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in your project before running it.
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
// capture.mjs
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs https://example.com');
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 375, height: 812 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
isMobile: true,
hasTouch: true,
});
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 45000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile-preview.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node capture.mjs https://example.com. This is an example workflow, not a guarantee that every site will reach network idle: analytics and other ongoing requests can prevent that condition. For pages where it does not settle, use an appropriate load condition and a deliberate wait or wait for a known element. Playwright documents page screenshot behavior in its Page API and the available screenshot scopes in its screenshots guide.

Capture one element instead
If the card should focus on a page section, wait for a stable CSS selector and screenshot that locator rather than the whole viewport:
const hero = page.locator('main');
await hero.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await hero.screenshot({ path: 'mobile-preview.png' });
Replace main with a selector that exists on the target pages. If the same selector is not reliable across unrelated directory submissions, prefer viewport capture or define site-specific selectors only where needed.

Turn the capture into a fast directory image
A browser screenshot is not automatically optimized for a small card. Resize it to the dimensions your interface needs and deliver responsive candidates rather than sending one large desktop-scale image to every phone. Google Chrome Developers’ responsive-image guidance, originally published in 2018 and updated in 2022, says desktop-sized images sent to mobile devices can use 2–4× more data than needed. It describes srcset and sizes for choosing candidates and notes that 3–5 image sizes are common practice, not a required count. Google responsive-image guidance
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse an image-processing step after capture to generate variants appropriate to your actual card widths. Google’s guidance names sharp for automated resizing and Thumbor and Cloudinary as image transformation or delivery options; these process images rather than capture web pages.

Choose a capture approach
| Approach | What it provides | Good fit when | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Hosted screenshot API and MCP server; one GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Mobile viewport, resizing, element capture, and capture controls are among its options. | You want managed capture, clean shots with consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets removed, and billing only for clean shots. | Choose your viewport and output dimensions, and review the response verdict and billing headers as part of your workflow. |
| Playwright | Browser automation with viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, file output, and image options. | Your team wants control over browser execution, storage, scheduling, and post-processing. | Browser hosting and maintenance, throughput, retries, and operational cost depend on your implementation; no figures are established here. |
| OpenGraph.io Screenshot API | URL-based capture; JPEG, PNG, or WebP; quality setting; full-page mode; an xs preset of 375 × 812; selector, exclusion, delay, and cache options. |
You want an API-based capture workflow. | Verify current price, limits, retention, privacy, and site suitability. Its documentation says returned screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours, so download or cache images you need to retain. OpenGraph.io screenshot API documentation |
| Image transformation and delivery tooling | Resizes and serves image variants after capture; examples named by Google include sharp, Thumbor, and Cloudinary. | Capture is already handled and the remaining problem is image sizing or delivery. | These options are not substitutes for a page screenshot capture tool according to the cited guidance. Google responsive-image guidance |
OpenGraph.io’s documentation states a default quality of 80, accepts values from 10 to 80 rounded to the nearest 10, and uses JPEG as its default format. These are that API’s documented defaults, not universal thumbnail recommendations. Inspect legibility and file size at the directory’s actual display size. OpenGraph.io screenshot API documentation

ScreenshotNeo lets you request a screenshot directly from a URL. Set your API key and target URL; the example saves the response as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Make refreshes and failures predictable
Directory entries change, so define when previews are refreshed and what readers see if a capture fails. A sensible policy depends on how frequently listed sites change and how quickly your directory needs to reflect updates; no single refresh interval is established by the cited documentation.
Best Value
- WINDOW SCREEN REMOVAL TOOL: Designed to easily engage, lift, and remove window screens without damaging frames or mesh.
- Durable Nylon Construction – Made from high-strength, impact-resistant nylon that's tough enough to handle repeated use yet gentle on delicate surfaces, won't rust or corrode like metal tools.
- DUAL-END DESIGN: Features a forked end to engage and lift screen edges and a flat pry tip on the opposite end for versatile use.
- HIGH-VISIBILITY COLOR: Bright orange construction makes this tool easy to spot and prevents it from being misplaced on the job site.
- DIY-FRIENDLY: The ideal tool for homeowners and professionals tackling window screen repair, replacement, or seasonal removal tasks.
- Store a stable association between each directory entry and its thumbnail so a refresh can replace the right asset.
- Keep a last known good image when a new capture fails, or show a designed placeholder if no preview exists.
- Decide how to handle redirects, invalid URLs, timeouts, CAPTCHA or bot checks, blank responses, and pages that reject automation. These cases require validation against your own intake and refresh policy.
- If using OpenGraph.io’s returned screenshot URL, save or cache the asset before its documented 24-hour expiry. OpenGraph.io screenshot API documentation
Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Capture hangs or times out | The page keeps making requests, blocks automation, or loads slowly. | Use a suitable navigation wait condition, set a bounded timeout, then wait for a page-specific selector or a deliberate delay where appropriate. Record failures rather than treating them as valid thumbnails. |
| Screenshot is blank or incomplete | The page may not have finished rendering, require interaction, or have returned a bot check. | Inspect the page outcome and wait for a visible content selector. Set a failure or retry policy; do not publish a blank capture as a valid preview. |
| The image looks like a desktop layout | The capture did not use an explicit mobile viewport or the site does not adapt at that width. | Set the same mobile viewport for each capture and verify the output visually at the card size. |
| Small text is unreadable | The card is too small to convey page detail, or the capture was reduced too aggressively. | Use a selected hero/content element, adjust the card dimensions, or treat the thumbnail as a visual preview rather than a readable page reproduction. |
| Images load slowly in the directory | Large captures are being served unchanged to small cards. | Generate size variants and use srcset and sizes to let the browser choose a suitable candidate. |
| Cards shift while images load | The browser does not know the image’s aspect ratio in advance. | Set the correct image width and height, or reserve the ratio in layout CSS. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should directory cards use full-page screenshots?
Usually not when the card is meant to preview the phone’s first screen. Use full-page capture when the entire page is useful in the directory’s presentation.
Which image format should every thumbnail use?
There is no universally correct format. Choose based on visual quality and file weight at the actual display size; the cited API documentation supports JPEG, PNG, and WebP.
