For a low-bitrate VPS, start with 360p or 480p at 30 fps, use constant bitrate (CBR), and choose a target your server can sustain continuously—not merely reach in a speed test. YouTube lists 0.3 Mbps as the minimum for AV1 or H.265 at either resolution, and 0.4 Mbps for H.264; its recommended bitrates are considerably higher. Treat the minimums as platform-published encoder settings, not a guarantee that a VPS connection will deliver an uninterrupted stream.
Choose a bitrate that your VPS can actually sustain
YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate ladder for 24/7 broadcasts. Its encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The current YouTube Help figures below were accessed in 2026; the page does not give the bitrate table a distinct publication year. Those figures refer to video bitrate. Audio and protocol overhead also use outbound bandwidth, and YouTube’s cited guidance does not quantify that overhead. Your VPS must sustain the combined stream reliably. A configured encoder bitrate does not establish that the server’s route, outbound capacity, or transfer allowance can support it around the clock.
Practical starting point
If the VPS has tight or variable egress, try 360p30 first and test the selected codec at a conservative bitrate the server can maintain. Move to 480p30 or a higher target only if the full stream remains stable. The official minimum is not the same as the recommended quality setting: the table recommends 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 4 Mbps for H.264 at these resolutions. Low-motion content may be more tolerable at a low resolution, but that is a practical inference, not a YouTube guarantee.

Do not treat a brief bandwidth test as proof of 24/7 capacity. Measure sustained outbound delivery under conditions resembling the broadcast, and lower the target or resolution if the stream health becomes unstable. YouTube does not specify a universal VPS headroom percentage in the cited guidance, so choose based on observed performance rather than an assumed platform rule.
Set the encoder and YouTube stream correctly
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Configure the encoder to use a supported video codec available in your software—H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1—and make sure that the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec match the bitrate plan. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps; for a constrained VPS, 30 fps is the relevant starting point here.

- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream setup and copy the stream key. Paste it only into the encoder or streaming service you intend to use. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream.
- In the encoder, select RTMPS if available, then enter the server address and stream key supplied by YouTube. If the encoder offers only RTMP, use the supported configuration it provides rather than changing unrelated settings.
- Set rate control to CBR, then set the video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use 360p30 or 480p30 as appropriate for your available sustained egress; do not assume that selecting a minimum bitrate will make an unstable connection reliable.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Configure stereo audio as AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Include audio in your bandwidth assessment, not just the video target.
- Start a test broadcast before committing to a continuous run. In YouTube Studio, inspect stream health and any encoder or ingestion messages while the encoder sends representative video and audio.
Test for stability, not just a successful connection
A stream can connect successfully and still deliver too little data consistently. YouTube’s API health documentation identifies low bitrate, long keyframe intervals, and video ingestion starvation as potential issues; insufficient video can lead to buffering for viewers. These diagnostics can point toward an encoder configuration problem or inadequate, unstable VPS egress, but a health indicator is not a guarantee of future uptime. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor the health state and messages during the test and after launch; if delivery degrades, reduce the video target or resolution and test again.

Keep a 24/7 broadcast running on YouTube
A YouTube 24/7 feed still depends on an encoder continuing to send video from somewhere. Google’s API guide describes a channel broadcasting a continuous live feed and associating separate broadcasts with the same ongoing stream. For a VPS setup, make sure the chosen plan’s sustained outbound capacity, data-transfer limits, and service terms fit continuous delivery. Check those details for the specific provider and plan; the YouTube guidance does not evaluate VPS hosts or establish a universal minimum connection speed for reliable operation.
