Prepare the game while you still have internet: install the complete title and its updates, sign in and finish any activation, enable the storefront’s offline option when it has one, launch the game once, then test it with Wi‑Fi disabled or Ethernet unplugged. Offline play is ultimately controlled by the individual game’s DRM and launcher. A storefront setting cannot make a title with mandatory online authentication work without a connection, and multiplayer or cloud services will not function offline.
What “playable offline” really means
An offline-ready PC game can start and run its supported local content after the computer loses network access. That normally includes a completed single-player campaign, local saves and settings. It does not mean every feature remains available. Online multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud synchronization, achievements that require a server and other network services need connectivity.

There are three separate conditions to check:
- Ownership and activation: the account or license must be recognized and any first-run activation must be complete.
- Local files: the game, downloadable content, patches and runtime components must already be installed on the computer.
- DRM behavior: the game and its launcher must permit a start without contacting a server at that moment.
A legal purchase, a physical disc or a launcher’s general Offline Mode does not override a title that requires a third-party login, recurring license check or always-online connection. Check the specific game’s store listing and publisher documentation before relying on it during travel, an outage or a move to a location with poor connectivity.

Read the title’s requirements
Look for wording such as “internet connection required,” “third-party account required,” “online activation,” or a named external launcher. Also check whether the requirement applies only to installation, to the first launch, or to every launch. A game may offer a local campaign while reserving co-op, competitive modes or cloud features for online use.

Identify the storefront and any extra launcher
Steam, Epic Games Launcher and GOG handle offline access differently. A Steam purchase can still invoke a publisher’s separate authentication program. An Epic title can be installed but ineligible for the launcher’s offline start. A GOG release is sold under a published offline-access policy, but a particular game can still have optional online features. Record every account and launcher involved before you disconnect.
Separate local saves from cloud saves
Offline play can continue with saves stored on the PC. Cloud synchronization pauses until the connection returns, so avoid editing the same save on two computers while one is offline. After reconnecting, check which save the launcher considers newest before accepting a synchronization prompt.
Universal preparation procedure
- Connect to a reliable network and sign in. Use the account that owns the game. If the title uses a publisher account, sign in there as well.
- Install the complete game. Include purchased downloadable content, language packs and any components the installer requests. Do not assume that a disc contains the current build.
- Let the launcher finish updating. A pending client or game update can prevent an offline start. Wait until downloads and installations show as complete.
- Complete first-run activation. Open the game while connected and finish license prompts, account linking, graphics setup and any required redistributable installation.
- Configure the storefront’s offline behavior. Steam has an explicit Offline Mode; Epic enters Offline Mode when opened without internet; GOG Galaxy is optional for the single-player mode covered by GOG’s policy.
- Launch the game once from the normal shortcut. Reach the main menu, load a level and create a test save. This confirms that first-run files and runtimes exist locally.
- Disconnect deliberately. Turn off Wi‑Fi or unplug Ethernet. For a stronger test, restart the computer and then start the launcher or game exactly as you would when away from home.
- Test the features you need. Load the test save, start a new local game and check downloadable content. Note which online menus disappear and whether saves can be created.
- Reconnect and resolve synchronization. Allow cloud saves and updates to complete before making further changes to the installation.
Steam: prepare and verify Offline Mode
Prepare while connected
Open Steam, sign in and allow the client to finish all updates. Install the game and its downloadable content, then launch it once. Complete any publisher-account activation or redistributable setup shown during that first run.

Test the exact Steam scenario
With Steam still configured and the game recently launched, disable the network and start the title from the library or its ordinary shortcut. Load a local save and create another test save. If the game reaches its menu and saves successfully, repeat the test after a full PC restart. A restart catches credentials or launcher state that remained in memory during the first test.
When Steam refuses to start offline
If Steam reports that the game cannot start in Offline Mode, reconnect and inspect the client and game download status. Valve identifies an update requirement as a reason an offline launch can fail. Finish the update, launch the title once online, re-enter Offline Mode and test again. If the title still asks for a connection, check its store requirements and any publisher launcher; the game may impose a separate authentication rule.
Epic Games Launcher: eligibility matters
How Epic’s offline behavior works
Epic says Offline Mode is enabled automatically when the launcher opens without an internet connection. That automatic behavior does not make every installed game eligible. Only supported, already-installed games can launch.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prepare and test
- Install the game and all required updates while connected.
- Start it once online and complete any account or activation prompts.
- Close the launcher completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Disable the network, open the launcher and select the installed title.
- Load a local save and try a new save before relying on the setup.
Epic notes that multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services may be unavailable in Offline Mode. Treat a missing online menu as expected behavior rather than evidence that the installation is damaged.

If an Epic title is missing or will not launch
Reconnect and verify that the game is fully installed and that the launcher has completed its updates. Confirm that the title is one Epic supports for offline use; an installed file alone is not proof of eligibility. If the title starts only after an online check, its publisher’s DRM requirement takes precedence over the launcher’s automatic Offline Mode.
GOG: the strongest published offline commitment
What GOG promises
In a DRM-free update published on 17 March 2022, GOG stated: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” The same policy says, “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” GOG’s developer documentation likewise says that games must be playable offline and without the Galaxy client.
Those statements separate the local single-player experience from online services. They do not imply that multiplayer, cloud synchronization or other server features operate without a connection.
Use offline installers for a durable backup
- While connected, open your GOG account and download every offline installer required for the base game and the downloadable content you own.
- Let each installer finish, then check that the files can be opened from your storage location.
- Copy the installers to a second device you control, such as a USB flash drive or another offline disk.
- Keep a note of the game version, language files and any install order the package requires.
- On a spare folder or computer, run the installer without internet and launch the game to verify the backup.
GOG describes making backup copies and provides offline installers. Keeping those files preserves a way to reinstall the build you downloaded; it does not change a game that was designed with a separate online requirement. Protect the backup from accidental deletion and test it before the original installation is removed.

Back up an offline-ready installation
What to preserve
Back up the items that the storefront or game actually needs:
- The complete installed game and purchased downloadable content.
- Offline installer files when the storefront supplies them.
- Save files and configuration files stored locally by the game.
- Required runtime installers or redistributables that were added during first launch.
- A record of the owning account, installation location and the last version tested offline.
A copied game folder is useful for recovery, but it may not be sufficient for a launcher that maintains a license record elsewhere. Keep the original storefront account accessible and retain the launcher’s local installation data when its documentation requires it.
Use two independent copies
Store one copy on the PC and another on removable or external storage. Disconnect the backup after copying so ransomware, file corruption or an accidental deletion on the main machine cannot affect both copies. Periodically reconnect while online to apply updates, then repeat the offline test if the update changes the launcher or game.

What will not work without internet
| Feature | Offline expectation |
|---|---|
| Single-player content | Can work when the installed title and its DRM permit offline launch. |
| Online multiplayer and matchmaking | Requires a connection to the game service. |
| Cloud saves | Synchronization waits until the device reconnects. |
| Server-based achievements or leaderboards | May be unavailable until the service can be reached. |
| Missing patches, DLC or runtime files | Cannot be downloaded after disconnecting; install them beforehand. |
| Mandatory third-party authentication | Cannot be bypassed by enabling a storefront’s Offline Mode. |

Troubleshoot an offline launch
The launcher says an update is required
Reconnect, allow both the launcher and game to finish updating, launch the game once, and then re-enable Offline Mode. Do not disconnect while a download is queued or while a patch is being applied.
The game opens but a mode is locked
Check whether that mode uses matchmaking, a server profile, cloud data or a publisher account. Use the local campaign or other installed content instead. A locked online menu is normal when the network is disabled.
The game starts, but the save is missing
Look for a local-save option and confirm that you are using the same Windows account and installation profile as during the online test. Do not accept a cloud-save replacement prompt until you know which copy contains your latest progress. Reconnect and resolve the synchronization choice before playing on another machine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA publisher login appears after the storefront was prepared
That is a separate DRM or account requirement. Sign in and complete activation while connected, then consult the title’s requirements to learn whether later launches can be offline. If the publisher requires a fresh authentication on every launch, no storefront setting or backup can remove that requirement.
The game works only until the next update
Updates can change both files and authentication behavior. Before a trip or planned outage, finish updates and repeat the disconnected test. For GOG titles, retain the previously tested offline installer so you have a known working restore point.
A practical pre-travel checklist
- Every title you plan to play is fully installed, including DLC and required runtimes.
- The owning account and any publisher account have completed first-run activation.
- The launcher shows no pending client or game update.
- Steam has been switched to Offline Mode, or Epic has been tested starting with no network.
- GOG offline installers and local saves have a second copy if reinstalling may be necessary.
- Wi‑Fi and Ethernet have been disabled during a full launch, save and load test.
- You know which features are local and which require multiplayer, cloud or other online services.
- You have recorded the installation location and kept the backup storage physically separate from the PC.
Choosing a storefront when offline access is the priority
Start with the individual title, not the storefront logo. For Steam and Epic, verify the game’s eligibility, activation rules and update state, then test the exact installation. If preserving a reinstallable copy is central to your decision, GOG’s published offline-access policy and offline installers provide the clearest documented path for single-player games. Even then, evaluate the title’s own online features and any optional account services.
The reliable sequence is consistent across platforms: prepare while connected, authorize completely, keep local files and backups, disconnect, and test before you need the game. That process exposes a title-specific DRM limitation while you can still fix it, change the purchase decision or choose a different game.
