Make a horror game less stressful by matching the setting to the thing that is bothering you. Use content warnings or scene filters for disturbing imagery, audio sliders and captions for startling sounds, camera and display controls for motion discomfort, and difficulty, aim, remapping, or toggle options for combat and input pressure. There is no universal “less scary” switch, and menus differ by game, platform, patch, and region.
Start in Accessibility, Audio, Video, Camera, Gameplay, or Content Warning before loading a new save. Change one group of settings at a time, test it in a safe area, and keep a pause or quit plan. The steps below use documented options from Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123, Dead Space, Redfall, DOOM, and Grounded as concrete examples; your game may use different names or provide fewer controls.

Identify the kind of stress you want to reduce
“Scary” is not one technical problem. A player may be reacting to gore, a particular creature, sudden audio, darkness, camera motion, chase sequences, difficult aiming, repeated button presses, or the fear of missing a story cue. Choosing the matching control is more effective than turning every effect down at once.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| What feels stressful | Settings to look for first | What the change does not necessarily fix |
|---|---|---|
| Gore, self-harm imagery, a creature, or another known trigger | Content warnings, hide-content, visual filters, scene bypass, phobia-safe mode | Unrelated scares, audio, or gameplay difficulty |
| Sudden musical stingers or loud attacks | Separate music and effects sliders; subtitles or closed captions | Visual jumpscares or chase pressure |
| Motion sickness or eye strain | Camera shake, head bob, motion blur, chromatic aberration, film grain, FOV, brightness or gamma | Fear caused by story or enemy behavior |
| Being chased, aiming, parrying, or resource pressure | Difficulty, combat assistance, aim assistance, threat indicators, resource modifiers | Disturbing visuals or sound |
| Hand fatigue or hard-to-hold buttons | Remapping, sprint and aim toggles, one-button quick-time events, vibration controls | Scenes that remain visually or aurally upsetting |
Make a note of the exact trigger before opening the menu. For example, “the low-frequency chase music is too intense” points to the effects or music channel, while “I cannot read subtitles during a chase” points to text size, background, or a control remap. This diagnosis prevents a brightness change from being used to solve an audio problem.

Use warnings, filters, and bypasses for sensitive content
Warnings help you choose before a scene
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 says players should receive accessible descriptions and in-game warnings before potentially distressing material. Its stated goal is to let players know about content that may affect their mental health or well-being before encountering it. A warning supports an informed choice; it does not remove the scene unless the game also provides a hide, filter, or bypass control.
Look for a Content Warning, Sensitive Content, or similar menu before starting the campaign. Also watch for a prompt immediately before a cutscene or mission. Read the description rather than assuming that a generic “mature content” label identifies your particular trigger.
Hide, alter, or skip the material when the game allows it
The guideline recommends ways to skip or bypass a mission or cutscene, including after the event has started, so players can continue other parts of a game. Not every title implements that recommendation, and a skip may leave an achievement, collectible, or optional item unobtained. Check the game’s own explanation before confirming.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGrounded’s “Arachnophobia Safe Mode” is a useful model: it changes the visual presentation of spiders without changing gameplay or difficulty. That distinction matters when you want the same challenge but cannot tolerate a particular appearance.
Dead Space’s two optional horror controls
Dead Space documents optional warnings that describe an upcoming disturbing scene and a hide-content mode. The hide mode places a screen effect over the visuals while the scene plays; its audio continues. Both features are optional and disabled by default. A warning is therefore appropriate when you want advance notice, while the hide mode is appropriate when hearing the scene is acceptable but seeing it is not.
Because the audio continues in that example, players who are sensitive to spoken descriptions, screams, or sound effects may need to lower effects, mute the game temporarily, or use a full skip if one exists. Do not assume that a visual filter also removes the soundtrack.
Separate startling audio from dialogue
Balance the four channels independently
Open Audio and check whether the game separates music, sound effects, dialogue, and cinematics. Redfall documents all four channels. If sudden stingers, weapon impacts, or enemy noises are the problem, lower effects first and keep dialogue high enough to follow instructions. If the score creates tension, lower music without sacrificing speech.

Cinematics may have their own volume control. This is useful when story scenes are louder than gameplay, but it can also make a hidden scare quieter without affecting ordinary exploration. Test each channel during a representative scene instead of relying on the menu’s preview.
Use subtitles and closed captions as a second cue channel
Enable subtitles even if you hear well. Text can identify a speaker before a line, clarify a whispered sentence, and reduce the need to listen for every sound cue. Increase text size if the game offers it, turn on speaker names when available, and add a subtitle background or window when dark scenes make letters hard to read.
Closed captions may label effects such as footsteps, doors, or distant roars, but coverage is game-specific. Redfall explicitly notes that its closed captions cover a subset of sounds rather than every possible effect. A caption setting therefore improves access to some cues; it is not a complete transcript of the soundscape.
Keep important information after lowering volume
Some horror games communicate enemy direction, an approaching attack, or an objective change through sound alone. After lowering effects, check whether the game offers visual threat indicators, directional markers, or an audio-visual mode. DOOM documents visual indicators for some combat sound effects and a threat-detection mode. These alternatives can preserve gameplay information while reducing the need to react to loud audio.
Reduce camera movement, visual distortion, and darkness
Turn off motion that causes physical discomfort
Disable camera shake and head bob when walking, sprinting, or taking damage feels physically uncomfortable. Redfall specifically notes that disabling both may help players with motion-related discomfort. If the game separates them, turn off the stronger effect first so you can keep a small amount of environmental movement only if it feels safe.
Also test motion blur, chromatic aberration, and film grain. Blizzard’s DOOM guide documents controls for these effects and notes that disabling chromatic aberration can reduce discomfort. These filters are visual style choices, not requirements for understanding the game; removing them often produces a clearer image.
Adjust FOV in small increments
Field of view changes how much of the scene appears at once and how strongly nearby movement seems to sweep across the screen. Redfall offers a 60–120 FOV range. DOOM describes wider and narrower FOV as player-adjustable comfort choices. Do not assume that the widest value is best: a very wide view can increase peripheral motion, while a narrow view can feel cramped or make turning disorienting.

Change FOV by a modest amount, walk through the same corridor, and reassess. Make the next adjustment only after your eyes have had time to adapt. If a game applies FOV separately to aiming, vehicles, or cutscenes, check each context.
Raise gamma or brightness without erasing contrast
Increase brightness or gamma enough to navigate dark areas and read environmental cues, but stop before blacks become gray and the image loses contrast. Both Redfall and DOOM document brightness or gamma controls. A brighter image can reduce uncertainty in a dark room; it will not remove a scripted event or change enemy behavior.
If the game provides separate HDR, display, and in-game brightness controls, adjust the in-game control first and confirm that your television or monitor is not applying an extreme contrast or black-level setting. Keep a saved baseline so you can restore the intended look later.
Lower combat and input pressure
Choose an easier preset or assistance mode
When stress comes from being chased, aiming, parrying, or managing scarce resources, choose an easier difficulty or a combat-assistance modifier rather than changing visual effects. DOOM documents difficulty presets that alter parry windows, enemy damage, enemy aggression, and resource availability. Those changes can reduce the number of simultaneous decisions without hiding the horror presentation.
Redfall offers four difficulty levels plus aim and input controls. Its guide warns that changing difficulty may require reloading for existing enemies to be affected. If a change appears not to work, leave the encounter, reload the save as instructed, and test against a newly spawned enemy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemove repeated or sustained inputs
Look for sprint toggle, aim toggle, vibration intensity, and button remapping. A toggle replaces a sustained hold, which helps with hand fatigue and lets you keep attention on the screen. Lower or disable vibration if controller jolts make a scare feel physically overwhelming.
Dead Space documents complete input remapping, one-button quick-time events, toggle modes for sprint and aim, aim assistance, and a persistent center dot. A center dot can reduce the effort of finding the reticle in dark scenes; one-button quick-time events remove the need to alternate rapidly between several inputs. These options change how you interact with the game, not the story content.

Consider adaptive controls for sustained limitations
Optional adaptive hardware can help when a standard controller requires an uncomfortable grip or prolonged pressure. Redfall documents Xbox Adaptive Controller support on PC. Compatibility is title- and platform-specific, so verify the game’s current support notes and map every required action before beginning a long session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a low-stress setup in the right order
Use this sequence when starting a new horror game or configuring a new save. It front-loads information, then removes avoidable sensory and input strain.
- Read the game’s content warnings or accessibility guide. Identify whether your trigger is covered and whether the title offers a warning, hide mode, filter, or bypass.
- Enable subtitles or closed captions. Increase text size, show speaker names, and add a background if reading is easier than listening in dark or noisy scenes.
- Balance audio channels. Lower music and effects separately from dialogue. Check whether cinematics have an independent slider.
- Disable uncomfortable effects. Test camera shake, head bob, motion blur, chromatic aberration, film grain, and controller vibration. Keep only effects that feel comfortable.
- Set the image and view. Raise brightness or gamma enough to navigate, then adjust FOV in small increments rather than jumping to an extreme.
- Reduce action pressure. Select an easier difficulty or assistance mode, enable aim help if needed, and remap stressful holds or repeated inputs to toggles or simpler buttons.
- Keep an exit plan. Know the pause and quit buttons. If a warning, bypass, or hide-content prompt appears, use it before continuing into a scene you do not want to experience. If the game permits changes only from a main menu, make them before loading the encounter.
After each change, play for several minutes in a low-risk area. This isolates the setting that helped and avoids creating a new problem, such as making dialogue too quiet while trying to reduce a jump scare.
Compare accessibility support between horror games
If you are choosing between titles, compare the controls that affect your specific trigger rather than counting menu items. The following documented examples show the questions worth asking.
| Capability | Dead Space | Redfall | DOOM | Grounded |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advance or in-game content warnings | Optional warnings for an upcoming disturbing scene; disabled by default | Not stated in the cited guide | Not stated in the cited guide | Not stated in the cited example |
| Hide or alter specific visuals | Hide-content screen effect blurs visuals while audio continues | Not stated | Not stated | Arachnophobia Safe Mode changes spider presentation without changing gameplay or difficulty |
| Separate music, effects, dialogue, and cinematics | Not stated | All four channels documented | Not stated | Not stated |
| Caption coverage | Subtitles documented; sound-effect coverage not stated | Closed captions cover a subset of sounds, not every effect | Visual indicators exist for some combat sound effects | Not stated |
| Camera and display controls | Motion and visual comfort controls are documented in the cited article; exact range not stated | Camera shake, head bob, brightness, and 60–120 FOV documented | Motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration, brightness or gamma, and FOV documented | Not stated |
| Difficulty and input assistance | Remapping, one-button quick-time events, sprint and aim toggles, aim assistance, persistent center dot | Four difficulties, aim and input controls, remapping, sprint toggle, vibration; existing enemies may require a reload after difficulty changes | Difficulty changes parry windows, damage, aggression, and resources; threat-detection mode documented | Safe Mode changes presentation, not difficulty |
“Not stated” means the cited material does not establish that feature; it is not proof that the current release lacks it. Patches, console editions, language builds, and regional versions can change menus. Check the current official guide or the in-game settings on your platform.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
The game is still too startling after lowering volume
Lowering music or effects does not remove visual jumpscares. Revisit Content Warning and Accessibility for a hide, filter, or bypass option. If the game provides none, pause before a known trigger, mute temporarily if audio is also a problem, or skip the session rather than forcing yourself through it.
Recommended Free Tools
You feel sick even with camera shake off
Turn off head bob, motion blur, chromatic aberration, and film grain as a group, then test a narrower or wider FOV in small steps. Raise brightness modestly so you do not strain to see. If symptoms continue, stop playing; no setting is worth pushing through physical discomfort.
Best Value
You cannot follow the story after reducing audio
Raise dialogue and cinematics while keeping effects lower. Enable subtitles, speaker names, larger text, and a background. Remember that closed captions may omit effects, so use any available visual threat indicators for gameplay information.
A new difficulty setting seems to do nothing
Some games apply difficulty changes only to newly spawned enemies. Redfall’s guide specifically warns that an existing encounter may require a reload. Save, reload as directed, and confirm the result in a fresh encounter before concluding that the setting failed.
Remapping helped, but one action remains painful
Check for a toggle alternative, one-button quick-time event, aim assistance, or vibration control. If the title supports adaptive hardware, verify its platform-specific compatibility and map the action outside a high-pressure scene first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Know the limits of game settings
Accessibility options can reduce exposure, sensory intensity, and mechanical pressure, but they do not guarantee a fear-free experience. A hide-content mode may leave audio running; captions may describe a sound without removing it; brighter gamma may reveal a room while the story still signals danger; and easier combat does not alter the narrative.
Settings are also title-specific. Labels, available ranges, save behavior, and whether changes work mid-session can change after patches or between console and PC editions. Before a long play session, open the current official guide or every relevant in-game menu, make a small test change, and keep your original values recorded so you can reverse them.
The most effective setup is personal: identify the exact stressor, change the narrowest matching control, preserve the information you still need through captions or visual indicators, and stop when your body tells you the session is no longer comfortable.
