To make Google the page Edge opens when you select the home button on desktop, turn on the home button in Edge’s settings and enter the Google address you want to use. Microsoft’s instructions for the new Microsoft Edge place this under Start, home, and new tab page. Opening Google when Edge launches is a separate setting, so you may need to change that too.
Set Google as the home-button page on desktop
Microsoft’s support article for changing the browser home page applies to the new Microsoft Edge and lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. Menu wording can shift between releases, so if your labels differ, look for the same options under the settings area described below.

- Open Edge and select Settings and more, then select Settings.
- Select Start, home, and new tab page.
- Turn on Show home button on the toolbar. The home button does nothing useful until this is enabled.
- Choose Enter URL, then type the Google address you want, such as google.com, and save it.
Select the house icon on the toolbar to confirm that Google opens. Microsoft’s desktop instructions do not supply a Google URL, so the address you enter is your choice.
Make Google open when Edge starts
The home button and browser startup are separate choices, even though both live under Start, home, and new tab page. The home button controls only what happens when you select it. The startup setting controls what Edge displays when the browser itself launches. If you want Google to appear every time you open Edge, set the startup behavior to open a specific page and enter the same Google address. Setting only the home button will not change what appears at launch.

Keep home page, new tab, and search separate
Three settings are easy to confuse:
- Home button page: Enabled from the toolbar option and assigned with Enter URL. It changes only where the home button goes.
- Startup: Decides what Edge shows when it launches.
- Default search engine: Controls which provider handles searches typed into the address bar. Microsoft documents this as a separate procedure in its mobile FAQ, and changing your home page does not change it.
Set a home page on mobile Edge
Microsoft’s mobile FAQ describes a different path for the mobile app. Open the menu, then select Settings, then General, then Home page. Choose A specific page, enter or select the page address, and save. The mobile search engine is configured in its own setting, so do not follow the desktop steps on a phone or tablet.

- Confirm that you are using the new Microsoft Edge rather than an older version of the browser, since Microsoft’s desktop instructions are written for the new Edge.
- If the home button is missing, check that Show home button on the toolbar is on.
- If Google opens on the home button but not at launch, change the startup setting rather than the home button setting.
- If the address bar still searches a different provider, that is controlled by the default search engine setting, not the home page.
