The phrase can describe a battery charger with two power sources, a USB Type-C power-mux controller, a car-audio wiring adapter, or a microphone/headphone adapter. The device’s application decides which meaning applies, and only then do its two inputs and their selection rules become clear.
What “dual input” means in practice
In electronics, a dual-input device has two places to receive power or a signal, and it needs a rule for what happens when both are connected. The term itself does not state that rule. Manufacturer datasheets and retailer listings use the phrase in the four distinct ways described below.

Four documented uses of the term
Battery charger with an adapter input and a USB input
Semtech’s SC820 is a single-cell lithium-ion charger with an adapter input and a USB input. Its datasheet, dated September 17, 2009 and hosted by IC Components, states: “Charging begins automatically when a valid input source is applied to either input.” When both sources are present, the SC820 selects the adapter input. This selection behavior belongs to the SC820. Other chargers with two inputs may choose differently.

Power-mux controller with USB Type-C and an auxiliary source
DigiKey’s technical article describes an optional dual-input power-mux controller that accepts a USB Type-C input and an auxiliary power source. A power mux provides source-routing: it passes power from one of its inputs onward. The article establishes that routing function, but the term alone does not say which input wins when both are present. For that, read the specific controller’s datasheet.
Car-audio wiring adapter
A retail listing from MT Audio Shop applies “dual input adapter” to a product that supplies wiring for car-audio power and connections. The listing shows how sellers use the phrase. It is not a technical definition and does not describe any electrical source selection.

Microphone and headphone adapter
A Reddit post asks: “Can I connect this dual-input adapter to my PC?” The poster’s adapter combines a microphone and headphone connection. The post shows how everyday users apply the phrase, but it is a reader’s question rather than technical guidance. Whether that adapter works with a particular PC depends on its connectors and the computer’s audio ports, and the post does not settle that.
How to tell which meaning applies to a product
Before comparing two products labeled “dual input,” check these points in the product’s own documentation:

- Application: charger, power path, audio, or another use.
- Input types: adapter, USB, USB Type-C, auxiliary source, or microphone and headphone connections.
- Supported ratings: the voltage and current limits stated for each input.
- Selection or combining: whether the device chooses one input or combines them.
- Priority when both are connected: which input takes precedence, and what happens when only one input is valid.
If the product page or manual does not state these points, the label “dual input” alone is not enough to determine how the device behaves.
