If FFmpeg exits when your church’s internet connection drops, run it under an operating-system process supervisor that can start it again. FFmpeg’s familiar -reconnect options are documented for HTTP connections; they are not a general switch for reconnecting an RTMPS output to YouTube. If FFmpeg stays running but the feed does not return, a process restart may not be the right fix. Test the complete recovery path in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it during a service.
First identify what stopped: the connection or FFmpeg
A network drop can leave FFmpeg running with a failed output, or cause the FFmpeg process to exit. Those are different failure modes. A supervisor can relaunch a process that has exited; it does not automatically repair a connection inside a process that remains alive.

- FFmpeg is still running: inspect its output and logs, then identify the protocol and format involved. Do not assume HTTP reconnect options control the RTMPS output.
- FFmpeg exited: a process supervisor or restart loop can launch the command again, provided the command, endpoint, key, capture inputs, and YouTube event remain usable.
- FFmpeg restarted but the event is not receiving video: check the server URL, stream key, event state, and stream health in Live Control Room.
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect as reconnecting when disconnected before EOF, along with options such as reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, retry limits, and delay controls. Those descriptions apply to HTTP. They do not establish that those options will recover an RTMPS output. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol options.
Will FFmpeg reconnect to YouTube Live?
Not necessarily. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags are not a universal output-reconnect mechanism, and a process supervisor only restarts FFmpeg if it exits. Neither method guarantees YouTube will accept the restarted feed into the same live event. The YouTube guidance cited here does not promise a universal reconnect window or same-event continuation; verify your channel’s behavior in rehearsal.

Check the installed FFmpeg version and build before depending on a particular option. Run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h protocol=http. The latter displays HTTP protocol help for that installation; an option shown there should not be treated as an RTMPS output control. The FFmpeg 8.0 HTTP source includes version-specific defaults for some retry controls, so do not assume those defaults apply to older or differently packaged builds: FFmpeg 8.0 HTTP source.
Choose recovery for the failure you have
| Approach | What it handles | Limit | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protocol-level reconnect | Errors supported by the specific protocol option. The documented FFmpeg reconnect options discussed here are for HTTP. | Does not establish recovery for an RTMPS output. | An HTTP input or another protocol-specific case confirmed for the installed build. |
| Process supervision | FFmpeg process termination: the supervisor starts the command again after it exits. | Does not fix a bad URL or key, an inactive or incompatible YouTube event, or an ongoing outage. | An unattended FFmpeg command where restarting the entire process is acceptable. |
| Backup encoder failover | A separately configured backup feed, if the YouTube event and encoder setup support it. | More involved than restarting one process; the handover must be tested. | A church that needs a prepared fallback beyond a single encoder restart. |
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover and confirming that the player rolls over. This is a separate resilience design, not an effect of adding a restart flag to a single FFmpeg command. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Set up a supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg
Use a service manager available on your operating system, or a carefully controlled restart loop, and configure a delay between attempts. A sample command would be misleading without knowing your operating system, FFmpeg inputs, service account, paths, environment, and shutdown requirements, so use your platform’s service-manager documentation to create the actual unit or service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Make the normal FFmpeg command reliable first. Confirm it can start the capture inputs, encode or copy the intended audio and video, and publish to YouTube under ordinary network conditions. Keep its options in the correct positions: FFmpeg options are positional, and input protocol options belong with their relevant input, not in front of an RTMPS output as though they controlled it.
- Run it under a dedicated service account. Give that account only the access it needs to capture sources and read configuration. Avoid putting the stream key in a shared script, repository, public document, or routine log. YouTube describes the key as password-like; treat it as a secret. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Set a restart policy with a pause. Configure the supervisor to relaunch after an unexpected process exit, with a delay or backoff so a bad key or unavailable network does not create a rapid restart loop. Choose the policy and timing for your service manager; the official guidance does not establish a universal restart interval.
- Retain and review logs. Make sure an operator can see whether FFmpeg exited, whether the supervisor relaunched it, and what happened on the next connection attempt. Protect logs if the command or environment might expose credentials.
- Check what a full restart resets. Restarting the command also restarts its inputs and encoders. Confirm that this is acceptable for the church’s cameras, audio interface, capture devices, and event workflow before enabling unattended restarts.
- Rehearse the recovery. Intentionally interrupt the network or stop the primary encoder, then watch the process and YouTube event. Do not wait for a live service to discover whether the supervisor restarts FFmpeg or whether YouTube accepts the returning feed.
Confirm YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the server URL and stream key for the intended event or stream setup.
- Use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides rather than assuming a visible RTMP address is interchangeable. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Provide the URL and key to FFmpeg through a protected configuration method appropriate to your system. Do not publish the key or leave it in routine logs; regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Check the event preview and stream health after FFmpeg reconnects or restarts. Confirm that the expected audio and video return to the intended event.
Rehearse the church stream’s failure and fallback
YouTube advises creators to set up ahead of time, check the preview, monitor stream health, and test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Turn that into a short rehearsal with a human operator present:

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Start the event and confirm the expected picture, sound, and stream health.
- Interrupt the primary feed deliberately. Note whether FFmpeg stays alive or exits, and whether the supervisor relaunches it.
- Watch Live Control Room: confirm whether the preview or event state accepts the returning feed and whether audio and video resume.
- Practice the human fallback, including switching to a backup encoder if one is configured, or informing the congregation if the stream cannot recover.
- Repeat after meaningful changes to FFmpeg, the service configuration, the encoder setup, or the YouTube event workflow.
YouTube’s advice is simple: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube live streaming tips.

FFmpeg is running, but video has not returned
Check the FFmpeg log and determine whether the process is still alive or stuck after an output error. A supervisor that restarts only on process exit will not act while FFmpeg remains running. Diagnose the output protocol and command behavior; do not add HTTP reconnect options to an RTMPS output on the assumption they apply.

FFmpeg exits repeatedly
Read the retained logs for the startup or output error, then verify the input devices, command options, endpoint, and key. Add a restart delay to avoid a rapid loop while correcting the cause. A supervisor can repeat a failed command indefinitely; repetition is not recovery.
FFmpeg restarts, but YouTube does not show the intended live event
Confirm that the RTMPS server URL and key are the ones for the intended setup. Check Live Control Room’s preview, event state, and stream health. YouTube’s published guidance does not guarantee that a restarted encoder will rejoin the same event after every interruption, so use rehearsal to establish your channel’s actual behavior.

The stream drops again after recovery
Look beyond the restart mechanism: check the church’s upstream connectivity, upload capacity, and local network stability. YouTube recommends an upload-speed test and reviewing stream health. Repeatedly restarting FFmpeg cannot repair an ISP outage or an unstable network. See YouTube’s streaming and failover advice.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your church is streaming uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube channel rather than sending a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video rather than going live from a camera. It supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
