How to Stream a Podcast Archive to YouTube Live With OBS Media Sources

To stream one prerecorded podcast file as a YouTube Live event, add it to an OBS Media Source. For a sequence of episodes, use OBS’s VLC Video source, which provides playlist controls and requires VLC to be installed. Connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, check the incoming preview, then go live.

Before you start

You need a podcast audio or video file stored on the computer running OBS, OBS Studio, a YouTube channel eligible to livestream, and a reliable upload connection. YouTube says channels must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; its guidance also states a minimum age of 16. Check your current account status and availability in YouTube Studio, since eligibility can depend on the account.

Decide whether you are replaying one file or a queue of files. A single episode is simplest with Media Source. A playlist of episodes calls for VLC Video. Before building the stream, make sure you have permission to rebroadcast the entire archive, including music, guest contributions, clips, and other third-party material. YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for necessary rights in live and archived content; this is a practical rights check, not individualized legal advice.

Prepare the YouTube Live event

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder stream, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Set the event details. Add the title and choose visibility and schedule. Confirm the correct event is selected before copying connection details.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key. OBS uses these to send the signal to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. YouTube explains these controls in Manage live stream settings.

Add one podcast file with Media Source

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to choose an existing scene or create one for the podcast.
  2. Add the file. In Sources, select + → Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and choose the local file. OBS documents formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; see the OBS Media Sources guide.
  3. Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop if the episode should restart at its end. Restart playback when source becomes active starts it from the beginning when the source becomes active. Show nothing when playback ends controls what viewers see after a non-looping file finishes. Close file when inactive controls whether the file is closed when the source is not active. Choose these options according to the event: for example, a one-time episode usually should not loop, while a continuous replay may need Loop.
  4. Check the frame and sound. Start playback in OBS and confirm the image fits the canvas, if it has video, and the audio appears on the mixer meters. For audio-only episodes, add a still image or title only if useful; it is not required for the audio to stream.

OBS layers sources: items higher in the Sources list appear over items below them. If you add episode artwork or text, arrange it above the media source and check it does not cover important video. The OBS Sources Guide explains source ordering.

Queue multiple archive files with VLC Video

Use VLC Video when you want OBS to play a list of recordings in sequence. VLC must be installed, and OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is unavailable in the Sources list, check that VLC is installed with the matching architecture.

  1. In the chosen scene, select Sources + → VLC Video.
  2. Add the archive files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
  3. Choose whether the list should loop or shuffle, and set its visibility/playback behavior as appropriate for your event.
  4. Play through enough of the playlist to verify file order, transitions, and audio levels before streaming publicly.

For an ordered podcast archive, leave shuffle off. Avoid assuming a completed episode will leave the next scene looking right: check the end behavior and what viewers see between files.

Set the stream connection and preview

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select the YouTube service. Enter the stream URL and key copied from YouTube Studio, or use the available account connection flow if you prefer.
  2. Use the RTMPS ingest option where available; YouTube currently recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery. Follow its current streaming tips and encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the source and connection you have.
  3. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the signal to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, then inspect the preview and stream health. Where the selected event setup requires it, use YouTube’s Go live control only after the preview looks correct.
  4. Check that playback began at the intended point, the audio is audible and not clipping, and the correct title and visibility are attached to the event.

There is no single resolution or bitrate that suits every podcast archive: the recording’s properties and your upload capacity determine the appropriate settings. Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than guessing a universal value, and test before the public event. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends a short test and checking audio meters.

Monitor the stream and keep a backup

During the event, watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s audio/video output. If you are also recording locally, check that the recording is progressing and that disk space remains available. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. Its help page says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; see Archive live streams. For a long event or any recording you cannot afford to lose, do not rely on the platform archive alone.

Stop the event through the Live Control Room flow and stop OBS streaming when finished. Preserve the local recording if you made one. An external drive is one optional place to keep a backup, but required capacity depends on duration and recording settings.

Common problems and fixes

  • The Media Source is blank or will not play: Confirm the selected file still exists at that path and uses a format OBS supports. Re-select the file if it was moved, then test playback in the scene.
  • The episode ends and the scene goes blank: Enable Loop if the file should repeat, or adjust the end-of-playback behavior if it should stop without showing nothing.
  • A playlist source is missing: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key for the selected event, then verify the stream has been started in OBS. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • The preview has audio but no picture, or the reverse: Check the media file itself, the OBS scene’s source visibility and ordering, and the mixer meters. Confirm the YouTube preview before making the event public.
  • Playback stutters or stream health is poor: Test the connection and use YouTube’s encoder recommendations for the source resolution and available upload capacity. Reduce the output demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
  • The platform archive is missing after a long broadcast: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use and verify a local recording when preserving the full event matters.
