To recover from a brief network drop while FFmpeg is still running, use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer with recovery enabled. If FFmpeg itself exits, FIFO recovery cannot restart the process: use a process supervisor as a separate layer, and test whether YouTube accepts the restarted encoder for your event. No cited official guidance guarantees that the same live event will resume after a prolonged outage or process restart.
First, identify what stopped
There are two different failures, and they need different fixes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The connection drops but FFmpeg stays running: FFmpeg’s documented FIFO muxer pattern can keep processing in real time and retry the output connection.
- FFmpeg exits: FIFO cannot restart a process that is no longer running. A service manager or other process supervisor can launch FFmpeg again, but that does not guarantee YouTube will reconnect it to the same live event.
FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options describe HTTP protocol behavior. They can be relevant when an input is an HTTP stream, but FFmpeg does not document them as a way to reconnect an RTMP or RTMPS publishing output. Do not treat -reconnect 1 as the fix for a YouTube RTMP output drop.

FFmpeg’s official FIFO muxer documentation gives this pattern for attempting to recover from a temporary network failure:
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
- Replace
INPUTwith your file, playlist input, or other source. - Replace
rtmp://example.com/live/stream_namewith the ingest URL and stream key shown for your YouTube Live setup. Treat the stream key as a secret. - Adapt the codecs and mappings to your input and existing pipeline. The
libx264,aac,-re, and stream mappings shown are examples, not mandatory settings for every source. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options you use. - Run the command and watch its output while the stream is active. The FIFO recovery example attempts recovery every second indefinitely while FFmpeg continues processing; the actual result still depends on the build, network, and ingest destination.
This is a documented pattern, not a universal tested command. For your production command, preserve the input, encoding, and mapping choices that fit your stream and put the FIFO muxer in the output path.
Understand the recovery settings
| Setting | Effect | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
-attempt_recovery 1 |
Enables FIFO output recovery attempts. | It addresses temporary output failure while the FFmpeg process remains alive; it does not restart FFmpeg after an exit. |
-recovery_wait_time 1 |
Sets the example’s wait between recovery attempts to one second. | The documented example retries indefinitely, but that does not guarantee the destination will accept the connection. |
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 |
Allows packets to be dropped if the FIFO queue overflows, helping avoid an ever-growing backlog. | Dropped packets cannot be recreated, so the stream may have missing audio or video. |
| FIFO wait for keyframe after recovery | The FIFO muxer has an option to wait for a keyframe after recovery from failure or queue overflow. | Its default is false. Waiting for a keyframe can improve the recovery point but may add a short delay before output resumes. |
Use packet dropping when keeping near real time matters more than preserving every packet. If uninterrupted completeness matters more, evaluate the effect of queueing and recovery behavior in a safe test rather than assuming either setting is right for every stream.

Use a supervisor if FFmpeg exits
A process supervisor, service manager, or equivalent can restart the FFmpeg command after the process exits. This is a separate recovery layer from the FIFO muxer: it launches a new encoder process, and does not guarantee that YouTube will attach it to the same event or preserve continuity.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts, shared logs, and support messages. Store it in a protected service configuration or secret store.
- Set the supervisor to restart only when the command exits, and check its logs so a persistent configuration error does not become an unnoticed restart loop.
- Test a deliberate process termination separately from a brief network interruption. They exercise different recovery paths.
Match YouTube’s ingest recommendations
- Prefer RTMPS: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the secure ingest URL when it is offered for your setup.
- Set keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Configure the encoder accordingly; for example, check the GOP/keyframe settings in your FFmpeg encoding options rather than assuming a default meets this target.
- Preflight the actual stream: YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
These recommendations help validate the stream format and ingest path; they do not promise recovery after an outage or restarted process. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.

Test both failure cases safely
- Set up a private or otherwise safe test stream using the same source, FFmpeg build, output settings, and network path you intend to use.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the stream is arriving and its health is acceptable.
- Briefly interrupt the outbound network while leaving FFmpeg running. Watch the FFmpeg log for recovery attempts and check whether YouTube reports the stream as healthy again.
- Restore the network and note whether the stream resumes, how long recovery takes, and whether audio or video is missing.
- In a separate test, deliberately terminate FFmpeg and let the supervisor restart it. Check whether YouTube accepts the new connection and whether the event remains usable.
- Repeat with a longer interruption only if you can do so without risking a public event. Do not infer from a brief test that a prolonged outage will behave the same way.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely distinction to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an output error and does not reconnect | The FIFO recovery options may be missing, unsupported in the installed build, or not applied to the publishing output. | Check the output muxer and option placement, confirm the build’s FIFO support, and test the documented pattern with your actual ingest URL. |
| FFmpeg keeps running but the stream has a gap | Packet dropping or the outage itself can leave missing media. | Review the log and FIFO overflow behavior; test whether waiting for a keyframe after recovery better suits your stream, accepting a possible delay. |
| FFmpeg exits and nothing brings it back | FIFO handles output recovery, not process supervision. | Check the service manager’s restart policy and logs; verify that the command can start successfully outside the supervisor. |
| The restarted process connects but the YouTube event does not resume as expected | A new FFmpeg process is not guaranteed to continue the same event. | Check Live Control Room and event state, then test the workflow before relying on it for a public stream. The available official guidance does not guarantee same-event continuation. |
| The stream is unstable even without a drop | Ingest protocol, keyframe interval, or general stream health may be involved rather than reconnect logic. | Use RTMPS where available, use YouTube’s two-second keyframe recommendation (no more than four seconds), and inspect YouTube’s health messages during a representative test. |
