In OBS Studio for Windows, open Settings > Advanced > General > Process Priority. Start with Normal; try Above Normal only if OBS is struggling for CPU time while other processes compete for it. Process priority changes how Windows schedules OBS—it does not make a stream continuous or guarantee uptime.
What the OBS process-priority options mean
The current English OBS interface offers five choices: High, Above Normal, Normal, Below Normal, and Idle. You can confirm the labels in the OBS English interface definitions.

Process priority tells Windows how to schedule OBS relative to other processes when they compete for CPU time. It does not give OBS more processing capacity, improve your internet connection, or prevent YouTube from ending a stream.
Which priority should you use?
Normal is the sensible starting point
Leave OBS at Normal unless you have evidence that competing CPU work is interfering with streaming. This avoids elevating OBS without a demonstrated need.

Try Above Normal only when CPU scheduling is a suspected problem
OBS’s legacy advanced-settings help says that raising priority can sometimes help when encoding consumes substantial CPU. It does not establish that Above Normal is necessary for a prerecorded YouTube stream, and the guidance is not a current recommendation for this specific use. Change one setting at a time and check whether the actual problem improves.
Do not treat High as an uptime setting
The current interface includes High, but the reviewed OBS material does not recommend it specifically for nonstop prerecorded streaming. Choosing a higher priority is not a substitute for a stable encoder, a reliable connection, or recovery when a stream disconnects.

How to change process priority in OBS on Windows
- Open OBS Studio.
- Select Settings, then Advanced.
- Under General, locate Process Priority.
- Choose Normal to keep the default approach, or test Above Normal if CPU scheduling contention is suspected.
- Select Apply, then OK. Check whether the specific performance issue changes during a representative streaming session.
The setting affects CPU scheduling priority. It cannot correct an overloaded encoder or solve a dropped YouTube connection by itself.
What process priority cannot fix
- Encoding overload: Raising priority does not make an encoder’s workload smaller. If OBS cannot encode reliably, investigate the encoding workload and system capacity rather than assuming priority will resolve it.
- Network interruptions: Process priority does not stabilize a home internet connection or guarantee that YouTube remains connected.
- Stream continuity: A computer running OBS remains part of the setup. The priority setting is not an automatic restart or cloud-hosting feature.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
