To show a countdown between videos on a continuous YouTube stream, put the countdown into the program feed your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, the simplest repeatable method is to place a rendered countdown clip between your videos in an ordered VLC playlist. A separate countdown scene is more adjustable, but it needs a deliberate scene switch; OBS does not document an automatic switch to that scene when a playlist item ends.
Method 1: Put a countdown clip in the OBS playlist
Use this approach when you want the videos and countdown to play in a fixed order without manually switching scenes. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and looping, and requires VLC Media Player. OBS Media Sources documentation

- Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the VLC source is available to OBS.
- Prepare the countdown clip. Make a video that lasts as long as the break you want. Match its resolution and frame rate to your program where practical, and decide whether it should contain music, a sound effect, or silence. OBS does not automatically verify these choices for you.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add your program videos and countdown clip to its playlist in the required order—for example, video one, countdown, video two. Turn on playlist looping if the sequence should repeat. Leave shuffle off to preserve the order. See the OBS Media Sources guide for source details.
- Send the OBS output to YouTube. Start or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then configure OBS with the stream setup YouTube provides. Use the protocol and settings appropriate to your stream; switching to HLS is not necessary just to add a countdown. - Rehearse the whole sequence. Check the end of each video, the countdown’s duration and audio, the transition to the next item, and what happens when the playlist loops. Check the YouTube output as well as the OBS preview. OBS recommends testing before broadcasting. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Method 2: Use a separate countdown scene
Choose a separate scene when you need to change the countdown’s appearance or duration more easily, or when you want a particular background behind it. This method requires an arranged trigger to switch into and out of the scene; do not assume that the end of a playlist item will trigger it automatically.

- Create a break scene in OBS. Add a Media Source for a countdown clip, a text source, or a browser source, and add any background you want.
- Arrange the sources. OBS layers sources: an item higher in the Sources list appears above items beneath it. Put the countdown above the background or video it should cover. OBS Sources Guide
- Set up a way to switch scenes. Use an OBS scene transition or assign hotkeys to switch to the break scene and back to the next video. Test the exact switch timing during rehearsal. OBS documents scene-switching hotkeys and transitions, but the reviewed documentation does not promise an automatic switch at a playlist boundary. OBS Studio Overview Guide
A programmable controller such as a Stream Deck may be configured to trigger manual hotkeys, but it is optional hardware—not a countdown generator or a documented way to detect the end of a video and insert a timer automatically.

Which method should you use?

Why YouTube’s “Take a Break” is different
YouTube Live Control Room has a “Take a Break” feature that displays an away slate and countdown. YouTube says the break does not automatically end when the timer reaches zero; the operator must end it in Live Control Room. It is for an operator-controlled break, not a documented recurring countdown inserted between successive videos in an encoder playlist. YouTube also describes browser-source overlays and Stream Deck integration for ad management, which is a separate use. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source menu: Confirm VLC Media Player is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The videos play in the wrong order: Check the playlist order and turn off shuffle.
- The break scene does not appear at the video boundary: Configure and trigger the scene switch separately. Playlist looping does not establish that a scene switch will happen.
- The countdown covers the wrong content: Reorder the sources. In OBS, sources higher in the list appear over sources beneath them.
- The sequence works in preview but not as expected on YouTube: Rehearse the full stream and inspect the rendered YouTube output, including the playlist loop, before relying on it live.
