YouTube Live Loop Stream Settings for 1080p Prerecorded Video

Use the right 1080p bitrate for your codec and frame rate, loop playback in your encoder, and check bandwidth, audio, stream health, and archive limits before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 1080p prerecorded video streamed to YouTube Live, match the stream’s frame rate and codec to YouTube’s bitrate guidance: at 30 fps, use 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 60 fps, use 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Set rate control to CBR, use a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. You control the repeat loop in your playback software or encoder—not with a dedicated loop switch in YouTube Studio.

Recommended 1080p YouTube Live settings

Use the source file’s frame rate and resolution where practical. The bitrate depends on both frame rate and codec, so select the matching row rather than applying one number to every 1080p stream. These are YouTube’s official encoder recommendations checked in October 2026; the minimums are not the recommended targets.

Source and frame rate Codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate Minimum video bitrate
1080p, 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 12 Mbps 4 Mbps

These figures are for video. Configure audio separately: YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify AAC or MP3, stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps. For standard SDR, use Rec. 709, 8-bit color. HDR has different guidance: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S), and the guidance reviewed here says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings that apply across the bitrate choices

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Ingest protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s secure RTMP extension, when available in your encoder.
  • Codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to encoder support and your workflow. H.264 is a documented, straightforward option, but use the bitrate listed for the codec you actually send.

YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution and frame-rate selection is available when you use a custom stream key with manual settings.

How to loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live

YouTube’s documented setup covers receiving an encoder feed; it does not provide a separate YouTube Studio setting that loops a prerecorded video. Put the video into software or an encoder that can play and repeat it, then send that output to YouTube as a live feed.

  1. Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the broadcast. You can reuse settings from a previous stream.
  2. Connect your encoder: Copy the Live server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into your streaming software or encoder. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it is exposed.
  3. Load and repeat the source: Add the prerecorded file as the encoder’s playback source and enable repeat or loop in the software controlling playback. Check that picture and sound continue cleanly when playback returns to the beginning.
  4. Set the output: Match the source resolution and frame rate where practical. Choose the bitrate for that frame rate and codec from the table above, then apply CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval.
  5. Preview before going live: Start sending the feed and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the image is visible and audio is audible before starting the broadcast.
  6. Monitor the stream: Test with representative video and audio before the event, and watch stream health messages while it runs.

Bandwidth, stream health, and preflight checks

Your upload connection needs to carry the total outgoing bitrate, including audio. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom; other devices or streams sharing the connection can reduce what is available to this encoder. If you send a backup feed, budget its bitrate as additional upload use. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 feed at YouTube’s 14 Mbps video recommendation also needs room for audio and headroom; do not size the connection to exactly 14 Mbps.

  • Watch for health messages indicating low bitrate, unsupported codec, overly long keyframe spacing, missing audio, or video starvation.
  • Check playback across a loop boundary, not just at the start of the file.

YouTube’s own encoder guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Loop length, DVR, and the stream archive

YouTube’s setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a stream longer than 12 hours being archived as one complete replay on the basis of that guidance; plan around the limit and check YouTube’s current documentation if a long archive matters.

DVR is a viewer control for pausing and resuming a live stream; it does not repeat the source video. Latency is the delay between the encoder feed and what viewers see. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, so it is a separate choice from the source loop and stream bitrate.

Troubleshooting common 1080p loop-stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Buffering or unstable stream health Insufficient upload capacity, low or fluctuating bitrate, or shared network use Check actual outgoing bitrate and available upload capacity; leave roughly 20% headroom and account for any backup feed.
Soft or poor-looking 1080p video Bitrate does not match the codec and frame rate, or the source itself is low quality Use the corresponding recommended bitrate row and verify the source resolution and frame rate.
Encoder reports a configuration warning Possible unsupported codec, missing audio, low bitrate, or keyframes spaced too far apart Use a supported codec, confirm audio is present, apply CBR, and set keyframes to 2 seconds (no more than 4).
Picture or sound cuts out at the restart The playback workflow does not transition cleanly at the loop boundary Test the complete transition with the selected playback software before the broadcast; adjust or replace the source/workflow if playback stops or introduces a gap.
No preview in Live Control Room The encoder is not sending to the right destination or the stream key/server URL is incorrect Recheck the copied server URL and stream key, then confirm that the encoder is actively sending.

Copyright and reused-content considerations

Technical settings do not grant permission to stream a video. Use footage, music, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before going live. A loop is still a public live broadcast of that material. Repeating a recording also does not, by itself, establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements; assess the channel and content under YouTube’s current policies rather than assuming a loop qualifies.
